Do you know that if you are morbidly obese you are carrying round gallons of excess water/fluid retention in your body?

Do you know that if you are morbidly obese you are carrying round gallons of excess water/fluid retention in your body? No wonder you get very tired!

The good news is that it is easy to reduce this fluid retention and thereby reduce your excess weight. Here is the explanation: fluid retention is caused by salt sensitivity and is reduced by cutting down on salt and salty food. - It's as simple as that: it is not necessary to go on a diet; you just need to reduce the fluid retention.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! More about coenzyme Q10: can taking it in high doses slow down the progression of Parkinson's disease?

Rush University Medical Center is participating in a large-scale, multi-center clinical trial in the U.S. and Canada to determine whether a vitamin-like substance, in high doses, can slow the progression of Parkinson's disease, a neurodegenerative disorder that affects about one million people in the United States. "At present, the very best therapies we have for Parkinson's can only mask the symptoms - they do not alter the underlying disease," said neurologist Dr. Katie Kompoliti, a specialist in movement disorders. "Finding a treatment that can slow the degenerative course of Parkinsons's is the holy grail of Parkinson's research." The substance being tested, called coenzyme Q10, is produced naturally in the body and is an important link in the chain of chemical reactions that produce energy in mitochondria, the "powerhouses" of cells.
Read article at physorg.com
Comment: Research has shown that Parkinson's patients have impaired mitochondrial function and low levels of coenzyme Q10 and, moreover, that the vitamin-like substance can protect the area of the brain damaged in Parkinson's.

Omega-3 may improve blood pressure in kidney disease patients

A combination of omega-3 fatty acids and coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) may decrease blood pressure and heart rate in kidney disease patients, says a new study. People with chronic kidney disease (CKD), which increases the risk of heart disease two- to 50-fold, experienced improvements in both blood pressure and heart rate following supplementation with four grams of omega-3 fatty acids, according to findings published in the Journal of Hypertension. Furthermore, when taken in combination with coenzyme Q10 the blood pressure reducing benefits were enhanced, despite CoQ10 alone not being associated with any improvements on its own, report researchers from University of Western Australia and Royal Perth Hospital.
Read article at nutraingredients.com
Comment: The effect upon blood pressure obtained by combining coenzyme Q10 with omega-3 fatty acids is an example of nutrient synergy. The concept of nutrient synergy maximizes the health benefits of micronutrients because of the discovery that they work best in "teams". Minimising salt/sodium intake also reduces blood pressure and reduces the risk of heart disease.

Sodium in foods: how to lose excess weight by lowering your intake of salt/sodium.

To lose excess weight you need to avoid salt (sodium) and salty food. Eat low sodium food instead. Potassium-rich food and drink will also help because potassium displaces sodium from the body.

If you find it hard to cut down on salt, do it gradually. Your taste will gradually change. Try using pepper, herbs such as basil, chives, lemon grass, rosemary, parsley or coriander, spices such as chilli or ginger, balsamic vinegar or lemon juice, rather than salt, to add flavour to your food.

If you usually use stock cubes or oxo cubes when you are making soup or stew or a casserole, remember these contain a lot of salt. - Why not try using a small glass of wine to add flavour instead of using the high salt cubes?

If you feel you must use salt in cooking or to sprinkle on your food, you could try using LoSalt or Solo Low Sodium Sea Salt. - These mineral salts contain only about a third of the sodium present in ordinary salt and taste very similar to salt. This is still a high proportion of sodium, so use as little as you can manage and try gradually to reduce the amount you use.

In the USA there are other mineral salts that you can buy. One is called AlsoSalt and it contains no sodium at all so it is a good salt substitute for people needing to reduce sodium, but it still should be used in moderation. Another is called Nu-Salt and it also contains no sodium at all.

All of these salt substitutes have websites where you can read about them in greater detail. You should not use any of these salt substitutes if you have been told to minimise your potassium intake.

These mineral salts should be avoided by people who take certain medications, such as ACE inhibitors, which are used to lower blood pressure. And if you have kidney failure, you should not use a mineral salt without medical advice. But if you have kidney failure, you should already have been advised about restricting salt intake.

If you use convenience foods or eat ready meals, read the labels to find the lowest sodium/salt content. Choose canned vegetables marked 'no added salt' and products such as tuna canned in water, rather than in brine or oil.

Pity about the'unacceptable' levels of pesticides in supermarket fruit and veg...

Pity about the'unacceptable' levels of pesticides in supermarket fruit and veg... See Telegraph report. - And a pity the Food Standards Agency, with its divided loyalties, seeks to downplay this:

Extracts from the article: "The Food Standards Agency insisted the illegal levels did not necessarily mean that the food was unsafe to eat, and pointed out that the overall levels of pesticides in food had fallen over the last year. In 2007 1.8 per cent of food had illegal levels; 2008 it had fallen to 1.2 per cent." "Emma Hockridge, policy co-ordinator at the Soil Association, said: "Unbelievably we learn yet again that pesticides are turning up in fruit and vegetables supplied to schoolchildren. Yet again the government tells us this is nothing to be worried about.

"Yet we know that children’s exposure and susceptibility to pesticides is likely to be higher as per body weight they ingest more food and drink than adults and their bodies' ability to process and excrete any such residues is different to that of adults."

I reckon organic fruit and veg must be safer, though of course, it also costs more.

A further article about the reprehensible practice of ghostwriters, on the payroll of drug companies, writing articles for medical journals

Documents recently released in federal court cases against the drug company Wyeth have exposed one of the dirty secrets in the world of medical journals: the widespread practice of ghostwriting. While doctors are named as the authors of articles about treatments and diseases, behind the scenes is a paid writer who is largely responsible for crafting the piece. Not only is the ghostwriter on the payroll of a drug company with interests in the topic, the company often reviews the manuscript before the physician sees it.

Some researchers suggest that gut worms protect against allergy

Some researchers - Dr Carsten Flohr et al, of the University of Nottingham - are suggesting that gut worms protect against allergy, as reported here by BBC News. I've only read this one article on the subject, so obviously I am not in possession of an abundance of evidence, but going by the article itself, I doubt the logic of the argument.

The article states that "British and Vietnamese scientists gave local children treatment to clear their body of worms.

They found this led to an increase in dust mite allergy among the children."

And the researchers state that "this strongly suggests that gut worms have the potential to tone down human immune responses."

I myself am led to a completely different conclusion. - My conclusion is that it was the tablets (the 'treatment') that increased the dust mite allergy among the children, and that the further research they plan will be a waste of time and money, exploring in a blind alley.

What do you think?

A safe, drug-free way to reduce both the incidence and the severity of allergies, including asthma and eczema, in children, is to protect them from high sodium intake. Children should avoid salt and salty food. As well as reducing allergy problems, it also protects them from obesity and the many health problems associated with obesity.

There's an excellent article in the Guardian about a bone expert at Sheffield Uni who faces action over claims of ghostwriting for a US drug company

Excellent Guardian article by Sarah Boseley about a UK doctor (Professor Richard Eastell, a bone expert at Sheffield University) who is facing action over claims of 'ghost writing' for a US drug company. The article is also about the prevalence of ghost-written medical articles in order to profit drug companies.

It's good to see Tim Kendall, joint director of the National Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, speaking out on the matter, and saying that the problem is the close relationship between doctors and the industry.

Extract from the article: "Ghost writing was one manifestation of a bigger problem which he believed was the institutional bias of doctors who work closely with and for drug companies. "In mental health 85% of all published trials are funded by the drug industry," he said. Allowing for the unsuccessful trials the industry does not publish, the figure is probably nearer 95%, he said. Studies have shown that drug company-funded trials are five times more likely to come out with a positive result for the drug than independent trials."

Others criticise the GMC for its leniency towards doctors involved in dubious research practices.

Look at this startling and scandalous fact: A study of 4,000 physicians found that 96% received money from drug companies, and yet "the majority did not see it as a conflict of interest."

Doctors fall over themselves in their eagerness to preen themselves about their scholarly articles being 'peer-reviewed' and therefore worthy of respect not to be accorded to writings by lay people who have studied matters usually thought of as the sphere of the professionals only. - But what respect or even credence should be accorded ghost-written articles based on false data, false claims and false evidence, falsely by-lined by corrupt medics motivated by greed? - My question is rhetorical, of course. No respect whatever should be accorded to these junk articles, written about junk pharmaceuticals, by medics who dishonour their high calling.

Current vitamin D doses insufficient for pregnant mothers

Many mothers-to-be are not getting enough vitamin D, even those taking supplements at the recommended doses, says a new study from Northern Ireland. Almost all of the women in the study had blood levels of the vitamin below 80 nmol/l, a level which is widely considered to be the cut-off for vitamin D sufficiency, showing that current recommendations may be insufficient.

Civil liberties and privacy are fast being eroded by European Union governments, according to a report by the civil liberties watchdog, Statewatch

Takeover of personal information
Civil liberties watchdog Statewatch criticised the EU's post-9/11 security strategy as a "frightening" grab for every aspect of individual information. The 60-page report - published on the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington - said that the EU now saw data privacy and judicial scrutiny of police surveillance tactics as obstacles to efficient law enforcement co-operation, rather than rights to be safeguarded.

Medical students posting messages on Twitter and Facebook may be breaching patient confidentiality in some instances

There is concern that medical students posting messages on Twitter and Facebook may be breaching patient confidentiality in some instances, BBC News reports.

Higher levels of salt in 'free from' food products than in standard lines.

BBC News reports that "People choosing wheat or dairy-free products could be risking their heart health because many are loaded with salt."

Consensus
Action on Salt and Health has been surveying 71 own-label "free from" products from five leading supermarkets in the UK and found that over half contained more salt than the retailer's standard version of the product. Some had six times as much.

An example is "Sainsbury's Free From Jaffa Cakes have 0.67g of salt per 100g, compared with 0.1g of salt per 100g in standard Sainsbury's Jaffa Cakes.

This is more than six times the salt level of the standard version."

This really is shameful. All of the supermarkets know that salt content needs to be lowered in order to reduce the great harm that salty food is doing to most of the population. Actually to raise the salt content for people already suffering ill-health and seeking safe food is disgraceful.

The Food Standards Agency sadly is mostly words and little action. They should be enforcing less harmful salt levels on food manufacturers not waiting for the food producers to move at the speed of a snail on tranquillisers to reduce salt content. - And certainly not countenancing manufacturers who actually increase the salt content!

I heard Professor Jack Winkler, Professor of Nutrition Policy, London Metropolitan University, on the radio early this morning. - Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was complacently envisaging a twenty year wait for the food industry to lower the salt content to less dangerously high levels! - What is this? - Nutrition professor content to have yet another generation of fat, unfit consumers, plagued by chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, cancer and all the rest of the obesity co-morbidities, just for want of telling the truth about salt and insisting to the food industry that their profits cannot be deemed to be more important than the nation's health.

I fear there are too many vested interests involved in this destruction of the health of the nation (and other nations). Big Pharma's malign influence inflates the already reckless tendency of medics to prescribe more and more drugs, too many of which drugs cause salt sensitivity (i.e. fluid retention/weight gain). The salt sensitivity coupled with the food industry having ladled salt into their products for many years now and produced many customers 'addicted' to salty food, will literally be the death of millions of innocent consumers, who very sadly will have endured years of ill-health, unhappiness and insults before that release.

Relatives of people in assisted suicide cases will not face prosecution as long as they do not maliciously encourage them to kill themselves.

See Telegraph report.

I'm in favour of this new guidance. What I'm not in favour of is when medical and/or nursing staff kill patients by giving them morphine and other such drugs, pretending that their object is the relief of pain, when the real intention is to hasten death.

Give your children the best start in life. Protect them from salt and salty food.

Salt and salty food are bad for little children. It is eating salty food that causes children to become fat. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all. - Babies can die if they are fed salty food.

There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body. Overweight children should not be put on a diet; dieting is harmful and unnecessary and does not usually result in weight loss. Once children start dieting it is often the beginning of a lifetime of yo-yo dieting and increasing weight and ill-health.

Unfortunately bread contains a lot of salt and most families eat quite a lot of bread because of using it for sandwiches in packed lunches, and for toast, etc. Because of its high salt content bread is not a healthy food for little children or for anyone who is overweight. Some bread manufacturers have lowered the salt content of certain loaves, but most bread still usually contains 0.5g or more of sodium per 100g. This is too much. - Always check on the packet; look for the lowest sodium content.

Boycott salty snacks that manufacturers make for children. Salty snacks damage the health of little children, and the damage is permanent.

Try to find children's foods with less salt. Or provide home-cooked meals, without any, or without much, added salt, rather than commercially produced ready meals and snacks.

For breakfast consider providing porridge, ReadyBrek, Shredded Wheat or Shreddies, all of which have no added salt, instead of cornflakes or most other breakfast cereals, which have had a lot of salt added by manufacturers.

If your children are keen on beans in tomato sauce, look at the label on the tin. - Buy the tin with a lower salt/sodium content. Give them smaller helpings of the beans.

In general it would be good for children not to develop a taste for salt. Providing snacks of fresh fruit, ready-to-eat dried fruit or unsalted nuts instead of salty savouries would help them.

British police are failing the British people. They should be ashamed of themselves.

The Telegraph deplores the fact that a vulnerable mother and her two disabled children were tormented relentlessly by young thugs for eleven years and that her repeated requests for help from the police were ignored, leading her to kill herself and one of her children.

In these dread days, our well-paid British police are largely useless in protecting decent and law-abiding citizens from criminals. There should be severe punishment for the officers who by their neglect contributed to this innocent family's great suffering and ultimate destruction.

E. coli outbreak - Professor Pennington makes it clear: Children under five should not be allowed to touch animals at petting farms

BBC News reports Professor Hugh Pennington, the microbiologist, as saying that children under five should not be allowed to touch animals at petting farms because they are the "most likely to touch the animals" and "the most difficult part of the population to get to wash their hands".

This is his recommendation following the recent cases of E. coli infections in young children who have visited petting farms (i.e. farms where touching and stroking the animals is allowed). E. coli is a very nasty infection, especially in young children, some of whom have had to be hospitalised. Kidney damage is one of the serious consequences of this illness.

Extract from the BBC report: "Nine children are among those with Godstone Farm-linked infections; one is due to be allowed home later on Saturday, with the others remaining in a stable condition, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA).

Earlier this week, the HPA apologised for delays in its handling of the Godstone Farm outbreak and announced that an external investigation would be carried out."

Genetic engineering is now an issue for five neighbouring Asian countries

Viet Nam is one of five neighbouring nations considering issuing a declaration against the use of genetically modified soybeans. This was announced at the second annual conference of the so-called Greater Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta Sub-region (GMS) a the weekend. At the meeting, Viet Nam reported that several non-modified varieties of rice, soybean and potatoes it had received from other members had brought promising results. The move to ban transgenic materials was made by Thailand, one of the six members of the GMS. Thailand is one of the growing number of nations throughout the world that has banned the importation of transgenic soybeans for any purpose. The other members of the group are Viet Nam, Myanmar, Thailand, China and Laos.

I've been looking at Kellogg's Optivita. I see that it contains no added salt. - Hurray!

I've been looking at Kellogg's Optivita. I see that it contains no added salt. - Hurray!

It says on the pack "*Kellogg's Optivita can help lower cholesterol because it contains Oat Beta Glucan, the most effective part of the oat." - Well for all I know, that could well be true.

But the MOST IMPORTANT thing is that it contains no added salt/sodium - and lowering sodium intake DEFINITELY lowers cholesterol levels and reduces your risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, etc.

I see they have added potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride. (Sodium chloride is the chemical name for common table salt.) - Why can't the Food Standards Agency get some bread manufacturers to make some bread products using potassium chloride instead of sodium chloride, to benefit most people's health? - And don't tell me that salt is necessary for the bread-making process, 'cos I don't believe that for one moment. - I make my own bread, in a bread-maker, and I don't add salt, and it doesn't stop the bread rising or anything. The bread just doesn't keep as long. But bread is better eaten fresh in any case.

Optivita still contains a helluva a lot of sugar though. (Rhetorical question: Why do breakfast cereal manufacturers think that consumers want cereals that are sickly sweet and rot their teeth?)

Investigation into Health Protection Agency's delay in ordering the closure of Godstone Farm, because of the E.coli outbreak

Some Tesco stores not hygienic enough

The Telegraph reports that many supermarket stores are not reaching a high enough standard of hygiene, and that Tesco has been found to be the least hygienic of the big four supermarkets. Of all the supermarkets, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer were the most hygienic.

The Health Protection Agency should have closed down visits to Godstone Farm earlier. E.coli is too serious an illness to take risks with.

BBC News reports on the very serious E.coli outbreak linked to Godstone Farm in Surrey.

The Health Protection Agency doesn't seem to be much good at protecting health, does it? It should have erred on the side of caution. I wonder why it didn't? It's foresight they should be using in that sort of job, not hindsight. In my view, their delay in closing down visits to the farm is indefensible and they bear a heavy share of responsibility for the grave illness of some little children.

Extract from the BBC report:

"Tracy Mock, 39, from Paddock Wood, Kent, said her two-year-old twin boys were taken ill after visiting the farm on 31 August.

"If they had just shut the place down to investigate, my sons would not be in hospital on kidney dialysis machines," she said."

“Growing evidence” of a link between pesticides and Parkinson’s.

The Telegraph reports that using pesticides in your job increases your risk of developing Parkinson's. Thus gardeners and farmers are three times as likely to get this illness.

Water pollution by heavy metals is damaging the health of many Americans

Water pollution by heavy metals is damaging the health of many Americans, as reported by the New York Times. Regulators appear to be falling down on the job.

Thousands of adverse reactions to GlaxoSmithKline's cervical-cancer-vaccine, Cervarix.

I believe the best protection against cervical cancer in teenage girls is to explain to them, and make sure they understand, that young girls are more susceptible to cervical cancer if they indulge in sexual activity before the cervix is sufficiently mature to deal with introduced infection from a partner. This is one of the many good reasons they should wait until they are older before they have sex.

The Telegraph
reports that there have been suspected adverse effects on more than two thousand schoolgirls after receiving the Cervarix jab. These include convulsions, fever and paralysis, nausea, muscle weakness, dizziness and blurred vision, rashes, pain in the arm, allergies and other ill-effects. These reactions were recorded by the drug safety watchdog Medicines and Health care products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).

Jackie Fletcher, founder of Jabs, a support group for families whose children have fallen ill after immunisation does not think there is sufficient evidence that Cervarix is safe.

Cancer charities continue to urge parents to have their daughters vaccinated, claiming that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks. But where these charities receive substantial donations from drug companies, especially from Glaxo, the manufacturer of Cervarix, there may be divided loyalties that influence what they say. The Telegraph article gives details of Stacey Jones, whose health was devastatingly damaged by a brain injury, caused by inflammation of the brain, when she had 18 epileptic seizures, the first one of which occurred 4 days after her third Cervarix injection.

I found this blog entry by Paul Flynn dark but insightful. It contains this gem of a sentence: Pharmageddon is when medicines produce more ill-health than health, and when medical progress does more harm than good. - I believe we reached this stage long ago and are heading for global as well as national catastrophe unless something effective is done soon to curb the power and malign influence of the drug companies and their medical acolytes and the politicians they have corrupted. - Do we have no honest, courageous, intelligent politicians to wage out-and-out war on the evil that is Big Pharma?

You can read on my website about some of the terrible harm done by pharmaceutical drugs that are recklessly over-prescribed by our drug-obsessed medical profession. (Prescription drugs are, of course, a major cause of obesity, morbid obesity and obesity-related illnesses, e.g. type 2 diabetes and heart disease.)

You don't need Phentermine to lose weight

You don't need Phentermine (aka Adipex-P, Ionamin, Obenix, Oby-Cap, Teramine, Zantryl) or any other pharmaceutical junk in order to lose excess weight. You just need to stop dieting and counting calories and instead concentrate on eating less salt and salty food. This is the safest, fastest, most effective way to lose weight.

Do you wonder why it is that some people can eat whatever they like, and as much as they like, and not become fat?

Do you wonder why it is that some people can eat whatever they like, and as much as they like, and not become fat, while other people become fat despite not eating a lot and not being lazy? - The explanation is that the people who become fat are vulnerable to salt. For them, eating salt causes them to retain extra bodily fluid and this causes rhem to become fatter and to gain weight.

The groups of people vulnerable to salt are babies and children, people who take or who have taken certain prescribed steroids, including prednisone and prednisolone, or certain other prescribed drugs, women who take or have taken HRT or other oestrogen-containing drugs such as some contraceptive medications, people who take or have taken amitriptyline or other tricyclic antidepressants or some other psychotropic/psychoactive drugs, pregnant mothers, PMT sufferers and people who ate salt as children. These groups need to minimise their salt intake.

Salt Can Cause Obesity

If you fall into one of the vulnerable groups I have listed or if you ate a high salt diet as a child you will be sensitive to salt. People without this problem can eat salty foods without doing a lot of harm to themselves, because their kidneys will excrete the sodium which is excess to their requirements. But for people sensitive to salt, some of the excess sodium, along with the water it attracts, will enter their blood stream and not be excreted. So they carry extra weight - as water - around with them all the time. They also lose more heat from their bodies because the surface area of their body has increased with the added water, and the rate at which a body loses heat is proportional to its surface area. - They therefore need extra calories to do the extra work and to provide the extra heat. - So their appetite increases in order to obtain these extra calories. - So they may very well eat more to satisfy their genuine need for calories. - If what they eat is salty, then the cycle will repeat itself and they are likely to become obese.

To break the cycle and put the process into reverse, all that is necessary for them to do is to eat less salt. And eating extra potassium by way of fresh fruit and vegetables will accelerate the excretion of the sodium and water and speed up the weight loss.

In my opinion, people who remain slim are slim not because they have strong will-power to resist extra calories, but because they have strong-walled healthy veins which can resist the incursion of extra salt water.

Three Cheers for Vitamin D!

Three Cheers for Vitamin D! - There are many health benefits from making sure you are getting enough vitamin D.

Maybe you are like me - not able to get out in the sun much, and so not getting much vitamin D from sunshine on your skin. If you are rather weak/frail/infirm, this lack of sunshine could be part of the cause, especially if you are elderly. Maybe, like me, you would benefit from taking in more vitamin D by way of your food or in vitamin D tablets.

I've found that after a few months taking vitamin D tablets I really have benefited from them. - I feel much stronger. - My arms and hands are stronger. My legs are stronger. It is much, much easier for me to get up from a chair, which had, as a steroid victim, become a really difficult feat.

Many people suffer, unknowingly, from vitamin D deficiency and would, as I did, benefit from increasing their intake of the sunshine vitamin. There are many health benefits from this, apart from the ones I have mentioned here. - If you click on the vitamin D tags in the list of tags under this post, I'm sure you would find much that will interest and help you.

Is your use of mobile phones putting you at risk of brain cancer?

The Telegraph reports on increasing numbers of brain cancers which appear to be associated with long-term use of mobile phones. It is likely that using mobile phones from an early age increases the risk of radiation damage.

Tamiflu-resistant swine flu infections are occurring in different parts of the world.

See Reuters Report about case in Australia and Boston Globe report about cases in Atlanta USA. The ill-conceived practice of Tamiflu being provided for and used by people who were not ill, will undoubtedly have rendered it more likely for drug-resistant strains of the virus to develop.

Good nutrition boosts your immune system, as does cutting down on salt and salty food. - Above all, do not lower your resistance by dieting. - If you need to lose excess weight you can do so easily, without dieting; you need to reduce salt intake, not calorie intake, in order to lose excess weight.

It would be great if ordinary members of the public could easily buy low sodium or no sodium baking powder

It would be great if ordinary members of the public could easily buy low sodium or no sodium baking powder in order to make scones and cakes and dumplings, etc. that are healthier for people who need to have a low sodium intake. If you know of any shop that sells potassium baking powder it would be helpful if you would kindly tell us about it using the Comment facility on the blog or by sending me an email from my website.

I found the website of a company that sells these and other specialised baking powders - Kudos Blends Ltd at http://www.kudosblends.co.uk/ - but they only supply in large quantities to industrial bakeries. It would be good if more bakeries decided to use potassium baking powder to make some low sodium baked scones, etc for the high proportion of their customers who would benefit from lower sodium intake. You'd be surprised how high in salt/sodium most scones are.

If you value your children's health, do not feed them salty food.

When young children develop a taste for salt and salty food, that preference tends to stay with them for life and they will find it difficult in later years to cut down on salt. They may even find that they need more and more salt in order to find food 'tasty'. This is a sort of 'addiction' to salt. But high salt intake increases the risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, cancer, depression and a host of other illnesses. These health problems are occurring in younger and younger people, partly because young people these days tend to eat a lot of salty snacks - like crisps, salted nuts, etc.

The main and most common health problem caused by high salt intake in children is child obesity, which of course almost invariably leads on to a lifetime of obesity and the misery and harm caused by obesity and by dieting.

Protect your children's health! Keep their salt intake low.

You want to get rid of the weight you gained from taking the contraceptive pill?

You want to get rid of the weight you gained from taking the contraceptive pill? - First you need to realise that although we usually think of contraceptives, correctly, as sex hormones, they are also steroids, and taking steroids often causes fluid retention/salt sensitivity/weight gain. You have gained weight because of developing some sensitivity to salt. You can reduce that weight gain, and prevent future weight gain, by avoiding salt and salty food. - That means finding out about the salt/sodium content of foods, looking at labels, etc and choosing the foods that contain less sodium. You really need to try to avoid processed food and instead cook fresh food from scratch, without adding salt to it. Processed food manufacturers add a lot of salt to food; that's why processed food is not usually healthy food.
