Is your use of mobile phones putting you at risk of brain cancer?
The Telegraph reports on increasing numbers of brain cancers which appear to be associated with long-term use of mobile phones. It is likely that using mobile phones from an early age increases the risk of radiation damage.

France has launched a multi-pronged effort to curb the use of mobile phones by children, amid fears that cellphones cause cancer and other illnesses.
France bans ads pitching mobile telephones to children
article in the Sunday Telegraph
Extract:
"Any advertisements encouraging children under 12 to use the devices are set to be banned, with warnings that children under six are particularly at risk.
It will also become illegal to sell a mobile without earphones and there will be limits set on the amount of radiation that a phone is allowed to emit.
The legislation, announced by Jean-Louis Borloo, Environment Minister, represents the first time that a European government has seriously confronted the widely-disputed health dangers of mobile use.
It contrasts sharply with the position in Britain, where the government has largely ignored the recommendations of an official report nine years ago that under 16s should be discouraged from using mobiles."

Possible harmful effects from the radiation from DECT cordless phones
After cancer warnings on mobiles, could your home phone be putting your health in danger?
Extract from the Daily Mail:
"These phones operate using the same technology as wi-fi computer systems and mobile phones - with the base station acting like a miniature mobile phone mast.
A recent survey by the Dutch Electrohypersensitivity Foundation has found that digitally enhanced cordless telephones - Dects - are the main source of radiation in homes that have them.
The researchers claimed that they frequently cause headaches, fatigue, heart palpitations and concentration and sleep problems.
According to cancer specialist Professor Lennart Hardell from the University Hospital, in Orebro, Sweden: "The risks are the same as for mobiles, but they haven't been studied because researchers thought the Dect operated like a landline."
One of the few scientists to have included cordless phones in his studies, Professor Hardell's research suggests that habitual users have a three-fold risk of acoustic neuroma (a benign tumour between the ear and brain) and a four-fold risk of a malignant brain tumour."

Scans put people at risk of cancer by exposing them to high doses of radiation
Scans put people at risk of cancer, experts say
Extract from the Telegraph:
"Some private healthcare clinics offer scans, ranging in price from £500 to £2,000, claiming to pick up early signs of cancer and heart disease.
Yet the patients are exposed to around 100 times the radiation dose associated with a normal chest x-ray, which can increase the risk of developing cancer."

Medical screening services may do more harm than good - e.g. those that use ionising radiation
Medical screening services may do more harm than good, warns expert
Extract from the Independent:
"A leading specialist has launched a broadside against the medical screening industry for peddling unproved procedures that cause more harm than good.
Professor Nicholas Wald, the director of the Wolfson Institute of Preventive Medicine in London, says hi-tech screening services which promise to detect early signs of heart disease, cancer and other conditions are being promoted by commercial organisations as a dubious way of reducing health risks. Clinics offering body scans, virtual colonoscopies of the bowel, and mole assessments for skin cancer have sprung up around the country charging up to £1,000 per test.
One firm advertises its scans as an "MOT for the body". The scans have become fashionable gifts for people reaching milestone birthdays of 40, 50 or 60.
But critics say the scans often reveal abnormalities without being able to distinguish those that indicate serious disease. Many patients then need further checks, causing them sleepless nights with anxiety before they are cleared. At the same time, the scans deliver a hefty dose of radiation."

Should schools think twice about installing Wi-Fi systems?
Schools 'should wait for official report' before installing Wi-Fi - Independent on Sunday
Extract:
"Schools should think twice about installing Wi-Fi systems while an official investigation into their safety is carried out, teachers' leaders said yesterday.
Philip Parkin, general secretary of the Professional Association of Teachers, said that the investigation – announced late last week by the Health Protection Agency – suggested that there was "no smoke without fire". He added that schools should consider more carefully whether they should introduce them into the classroom.
The £300,000 investigation marks something of a victory for The Independent on Sunday, which for five months has been calling for one, and will be the first of its kind. The agency says it can find only one peer-reviewed study in the scientific literature on radiation received from Wi-Fi, even though it is now to be found in half of all primary schools and four-fifths of secondary schools in Britain, and is being extended to cover vast areas of cities such as Norwich, Brighton, Manchester and London.
The agency says: "Wi-Fi is becoming increasingly widely used... However, there has not been extensive research into what people's exposures actually are to this new technology and that is why we are initiating this new programme of research and analyses."
It plans to spend at least a year "on a systematic programme of research" measuring radiation emissions from a wide range of Wi-Fi equipment and laptop computers, and calculating the doses received by adults and children using them."

Are baby monitoring devices harming babies with radiation?
Radiation from baby monitors 'poses risk' - Independent on Sunday
Extract:
"Baby monitors, bought by parents to keep their children safe, may instead be harming them, some scientists fear. They warn that the devices are bathing the infants in radiation at an age when they are most vulnerable to it.
The radiation, similar to that given off by modern cordless phones, is part of the increasing electronic smog to which mobile phones, their masts and Wi-Fi systems also contribute. The monitors use the same digitally enhanced cordless telecommunication (Dect) technology as cordless phones.
Over recent weeks The Independent on Sunday has exclusively reported growing concern that the smog may be damaging human health. The paper reported that Sir William Stewart, chairman of the Health Protection Agency, has been privately pressing an investigation into the effects on children of installing Wi-Fi networks in schools.
Baby monitors are typically placed close to infants, who are particularly at risk from radiation. An inquiry by Sir William into mobile phones seven years ago reported that a one-year-old child could absorb about twice as much per kilogram of body weight as an adult.
Babies are especially vulnerable because their bodies and nervous systems are still developing and because they will have more time to accumulate exposure to the radiation and for any delayed effects to develop.
Professor Denis Henshaw of the University of Bristol said the monitors are "being marketed without any checks and balances or even studies into their effects"."
