Do you suffer from Ménière's Disease or Vertigo?

Do you suffer from Ménière's Disease or Vertigo? - If you seriously cut down on salt and food containing added salt you will notice a big improvement. This mainly entails eating fresh food you cook yourself, instead of processed foods, ready meals and takeaways, because these are usually very high in salt. See Foods High and Low in Salt/Sodium. Other health benefits you will experience from eating less salt are that you will lose some excess weight, reduce high blood pressure, have more energy, and feel much better. You will also reduce your risk of stroke, diabetes, coronary heart disease, heart attack, most cancers, dementia and many other degenerative illnesses and conditions.

Suffering from constipation? painful defecation? haemorrhoids? overweight?- maybe also varicose veins? phlebitis? obesity?

You'd find it very helpful to eat less salt/sodium. This would reduce the problems themselves and also the pain and other difficulties they cause. Also try to eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables and to drink plenty of water.

Most fast foods/convenience foods/ready meals contain a lot of SALT. - That is why they are 'fattening'.

Overweight and obesity are caused by fluid retention, and occur only in people who are sensitive to salt/sodium. - To lose excess weight it is necessary to cut down on salt and salty food. - So instead of eating a ready meal you need to cook a meal from fresh ingredients and use little or no salt to flavour it. - You could try using pepper or herbs instead of salt, or if you feel you cannot yet give up salt, then use one of the low sodium salt substitutes, e.g. LoSalt, Solo Low Sodium Sea Salt or AlsoSalt, instead of ordinary salt.

Lose weight and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

The Duchess of York in Hull TV programmes. Also the Slimfast advert during the commercial break.

I watched both of the programmes on ITV1 about the Duchess of York trying to help an overweight, disadvantaged family living on the Preston Road Estate in Hull. I must say my opinion of the duchess rose considerably as a result of seeing these programmes. She was kind, friendly, understanding and helpful. Unlike many diet gurus, her manner was not at all patronising or bullying, and I think the family will have pleasant memories of their contact with her and so will continue to benefit from her sensible advice and ideas.

I was struck by one of the adverts during one of the commercial breaks - that for Slimfast. - There was the usual note on the screen about the product only helping with slimming if it is taken as part of a calories controlled diet...)o: - This is RUBBISH! - It is UNTRUE! - Calorie control/restriction/reduction/counting does not IN ANY WAY assist with losing excess weight.

The ONLY way to reduce excess weight is to reduce fluid retention, which is the cause of excess weight. - This means in practice reducing salt/sodium intake and/or increasing intake of potassium-rich foods such as fruit and fresh vegetables.

I wrote to the ASA (Advertising Standards Authority) years ago about this calorie-controlled diet advice, which is so widespread. The ASA is supposed to ensure that adverts are "legal, decent, honest and truthful." - Well these calorie claims are not true; they are misleading and damaging. To lose excess weight, calorie reduction is unnecessary, counter-productive and harmful, and furthermore, there has never been a shred of evidence to support the claims made about calorie reduction, nor have the claims ever even been put to the test... - But the ASA has never done anything about these fraudulent claims... - So, in my opinion, the ASA is pretty useless...)o:

Salty food causes fluid retention/weight gain/obesity in people who are sensitive to salt, so for overweight people to lose weight they need to avoid eating salt and salty food.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problem. - This is the latest drivel purporting to be useful research about obesity...

'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problems
This article is in the Telegraph.

It's so stupid. - How could genetic inheritance change so markedly in a period of a decade or two? - This is nonsense. - Obesity is caused by fluid retention, and fluid retention is related to salt sensitivity in groups vulnerable to salt. One of the groups vulnerable to salt is small children. (Note: obesity is caused by fluid retention - NOT by overeating. - You know loads of people who eat vast amounts of food and take no exercise and are as slim as reeds. - Clearly overeating does not cause obesity.) - Fluid retention (and therefore weight) is reduced when salt intake is reduced.

(I note the 'research' was funded by Cancer Research UK and others and this reinforces my low opinion of Cancer Research UK...)o: - They should be telling people the truth about salt and how salt reduction is the safest and most reliable way to reduce your risk of developing cancer.)

When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all.

Because children have much smaller bodies than adults it would be best if they had no more than half as much salt as adults. Most children, however, have much more than this because they eat so many snacks and instant foods.

There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, crisps, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body.

How to live a longer, happier, healthier life.

Five ways to live longer

Extracts from the Telegraph's article:

1. Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables
2. Eat oily fish and nuts
3. Eat whole grains
4. Thirty minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week
5. Vigorous exercise for at least 20 continuous minutes three times a week

Strange that they have missed out the two most important ways to live longer!

1. Avoid doctors and their pharmaceutical junk. Prescription drugs do far more harm than good on the whole and are a major cause of morbid obesity and its attendant ill-health.

2. Avoid salt/sodium and salty food.

And here is another:

3. Avoid dieting/'slimming' - slimming is harmful - and diet food and diet drinks. - Water is a healthy, non-fattening drink...(o:

Warning over increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes.

Warning over diabetes 'time bomb'

Extract from the Telegraph article:

"Britain is facing a "diabetes time bomb" with the number of people with the condition passing three million for the first time, a health charity said yesterday.

According to data collected by GPs, the number of patients with diabetes increased by 100,000 in the past year. Some 2.3 million people have been diagnosed with the condition.

About nine in 10 have the Type 2 form of the disease, which is closely linked to obesity. An estimated 750,000 others have Type 2 diabetes but are not aware of it.

Douglas Smallwood, the chief executive of Diabetes UK, said: "We are calling for immediate action on Type 2 diabetes and obesity to prevent future generations facing a lifetime of ill-health and an early grave."

It is salt sensitivity that causes fluid retention, and fluid retention results in obesity. - So to reduce obesity and the risk of developing type 2 diabetes it is necessary to stop eating salt/sodium and food containing salt/sodium. It is also helpful to eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables.

Dieting makes you tired, cold and hungry; it does NOT make you slim! - Obesity is caused by sensitivity to salt. - Lose weight by eating less salt!

Read here about Obesity and the Salt Connection

You do not need drugs to lose weight. You do not need to count calories. You do not need to exhaust yourself exercising.

You just need to give up dieting, eat good healthy meals with plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables, and avoid salt and salty food. - Here is a page of information about foods high in salt/sodium (the foods to avoid) and those low in sodium and/or high in potassium (the foods that are better for people who are wanting to lose excess weight) -

'Debate' about obesity: opposing views given, but neither side realises that salt sensitivity/sodium retention/fluid retention explain the conundrum.

Size matters: The Great British weight debate - Independent on Sunday

Yet another article about obesity which wrongly assumes overeating to be the cause of the rising incidence of obesity...)o:

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently the result of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

The conventional 'wisdom' and advice about obesity is wrong.

There is no evidence to support the calorie theory about obesity. - And reducing calories does not reduce obesity. - Reducing salt intake DOES reduce obesity.

Calorie counting and advice about increasing exercise and reducing fat intake to reduce obesity are ineffective, counter-productive and often damaging. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat.

It is commonly accepted now, except by the 'experts', that less than 5% of dieters actually lose weight, and most gain weight as a result of dieting. - Even the ones who manage to lose weight do not usually improve their health. - See Guardian article for a report in The Guardian of Monday, June 27th 2005. It is about a huge research study of nearly 3000 people over a period of 18 years. The study found that overweight people who diet to reach a healthier weight are more likely to die young than those who remain fat. It also found that dieting causes physiological damage that in the long term can outweigh the benefits of the weight loss.

A lovely bride has died of starvation after years of unsuccessful dieting led her to try obesity surgery - with catastrophic results.

Bride who had stomach stapled died of starvation - Daily Mail

Extract:

"A bride desperate to be slim for her wedding day died of starvation after stomach stapling surgery went wrong. Emma Favell, 32, paid a Belgian clinic £7,000 to carry out the radical procedure and within six months her weight dropped from 23 stones to 15 stones.

By the time she married in March, she weighed around eight-and-a-half stones and was able to slip into a size 8 wedding dress.

But an inquest has heard how a mistake in the operation meant she was not able to give her body the nutrition she needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle and she died a month later.

South Staffordshire Coroner's Court was told that Mrs Favell had suffered years of depression over her size.

The nurse, from Burton upon Trent, spent months researching the treatment before picking out a Sint Blasius clinic in Belgium, where the procedure is carried out for half the £14,000 price tag in the UK.

During stomach stapling, surgeons usually close off some of the patient's small intestine, leaving a smaller area where food and gastric juices can mix."

Such a sad story. Dieting does not reduce obesity, as this unfortunate young lady found out, and obesity surgery carries a high degree of risk. She has been poorly served by doctors.

The safe way to lose excess weight is to give up dieting, eat good healthy meals, low in salt, and eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables.

Social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook are being asked to restrict online groups that promote anorexia

Pro-anorexia rife on social networking sites - Telegraph

Extract:

"Eating disorder charities have called on social networking websites such as MySpace and Facebook to restrict online groups that promote anorexia as a "lifestyle choice".

Pro-anorexia and pro-bulimia sites feature photographs of emaciated women and encourage victims to become dangerously thin.

The groups are appearing on MySpace and Facebook as well as YouTube, a popular video sharing site.
Many of the groups have been shut down by internet service providers.

The charities say that the groups claim to offer support but instead glorify mental illnesses.

A search of Facebook revealed several "pro-ana" groups, many with almost 1,000 members.

On MySpace, which has 115 million members, another group features photos of models alongside the warning "no people trying to recover, it ruins our motivation".

Thousands of people have viewed clips on YouTube that feature women showing their jutting bones, and sharing tips about how to avoid food."

A completely safe, reliable and very fast way to lose excess weight is to avoid eating salt and salty food, and to make sure of eating good healthy meals with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruit.

Skin cancer is the fastest growing UK disease.

Skin cancer is fastest growing UK disease - Telegraph

Extract:

"Doctors issued a stark warning to holidaymakers yesterday as they revealed that skin cancer was now the fastest growing form of the disease in the UK.

Cases have "spiralled" in the past 10 years but thousands are still willing to risk getting a tan on holiday, experts at Cancer Research UK said.Skin cancer is just one of the "lifestyle cancers" that are on the rise as Britons risk their health
by sunbathing, drinking too much and eating a poor diet.

The number of cases of the most dangerous skin cancer, malignant melanoma, has risen by 43 per cent in the last decade. In 2004 there were 8,939 cases diagnosed, compared with 5,783 in 1995, the Cancer Research figures showed.

Since the mid-1980s rates have doubled in women and tripled in men but a recent survey showed that even though most sunbathers knew the risks they still intended to get burnt on holiday."

"Other lifestyle cancers of the mouth, womb and kidney have all risen as alcohol consumption has increased and the obesity -epidemic has got worse over the past 10 years.

Mouth cancer, which is caused by drinking alcohol and chewing or smoking tobacco, has increased by 25 per cent in the last decade to 4,769 cases and womb cancer, which is linked to obesity, has risen by more than a fifth in 10 years. Smoking and being overweight increase the risk of kidney cancer, the number of new cases of which has risen by 10 per cent in the last decade to hit 7,044 cases in 2004.

Overweight and obese women are twice as likely to develop womb cancer due to hormone disturbances in their bodies, and cases have risen from 5,018 in 1995 to 6,438 in 2004.

Half of all cancers could be prevented with a healthier lifestyle, experts have said.

Lucy Morrish, statistical information manager at Cancer Research UK, who compiled the figures, said: "While incidence rates for some cancers have fallen over the past decade, others are rising and many of these could be prevented if people avoided excessive sun exposure, smoking and obesity and limited their alcohol intake.""

If only people were to be told the truth! - Obesity is the major factor in most cancers, and tragically the wrong information/advice has been given by doctors for decades and continues to be given. - Obesity is not caused by overeating; it is caused by fluid retention - and fluid retention can easily, rapidly and safely be reduced by eating less salt/sodium. - Dieting is unnecessary for losing excess weight; indeed, dieting is counterproductive and actually HARMFUL.

Because doctors have been telling people and continue to tell people that to lose weight you have to eat less/eat fewer calories, overweight people keep trying to do this. The result is that they are eating insufficient food and so as well as the excess weight being harmful in itself, their inadequate food intake reduces their immunity still further and so the bad advice causes a snowball of increasingly poor health is the doctors' patients/victims.

IF YOU ARE OBESE, PLEASE GIVE UP 'SLIMMING'! - AVOID EATING SALT OR SALTY FOOD AND EAT GOOD HEALTHY MEALS WITH PLENTY OF FRUIT AND FRESH VEGETABLES. - THIS WILL REDUCE THE FLUID RETENTION AND SO YOU WILL LOSE EXCESS FLUID AND THEREFORE LOSE EXCESS WEIGHT.

IF YOU HAVE GOOD REASON TO BELIEVE THAT YOU HAVE FAT RETENTION TOO, THEN DO NOT EAT A LOW FAT DIET (HARMFUL AND KNOWN TO LEAD TO MANY CASES OF DEPRESSION). - TO REDUCE FAT RETENTION, YOU NEED TO INCREASE YOUR INTAKE OF CALCIUM, MAGNESIUM AND VITAMIN D. - See http://aboutsalt.blogspot.com/search/label/calcium and BBC webpage about calcium from The Truth About Food series of programmes

Cauliflower and broccoli reduces risk of developing cancer

Cauliflower and broccoli 'cut risk of cancer' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Eating cauliflower and broccoli twice a week can almost halve a man's chances of developing the most life-threatening form of prostate cancer, a new study claims.

The research shows that eating the vegetables can reduce dramatically the risk of an aggressive tumour.

Cauliflower can cut the chances of developing the cancer by 52 per cent, while broccoli can reduce the risk by as much as 45 per cent, the researchers said.

Although the two vegetables have long been thought to protect against the disease, this is the first study to show they are particularly good at preventing dangerous forms of prostate cancer."

Are you sick to death of dieting and genuinely puzzled that you can't seem to lose weight? - Here is the solution to your problems!

WHEN is the truth going to be told about obesity? - Dieting does not reduce obesity.

Read my Mensa article Obesity and the Salt Connection

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. - It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. (When doctors prescribe drugs that cause sodium retention and water retention they should warn the patient not to eat salt, or food containing salt, while taking the medication. When they do not give this warning, the inevitable consequence is considerable weight gain.)

Banning under-16s from catwalk 'will cut rate of eating disorders'

Banning under-16s from catwalk 'will cut rate of eating disorders' - Independent

Extract:

"Models under 16 should be banned from the catwalks and tougher measures introduced to protect their older teenage peers from eating disorders, an independent inquiry has concluded.

Eating disorders affect as many as 40 per cent of workers where body shape counts, including dancers, athletes and models, although no specific studies of the fashion industry have been made, the inquiry set up by the British Fashion Council found.

In the general population the incidence of eating disorders is about 3 per cent.

The inquiry was launched seven weeks ago in response to concern about demand for "size zero" models. In its interim report, published yesterday, the inquiry panel calls for extra protection for girls aged 16 to 18 to prevent them being exploited.

Models who gave evidence to the inquiry described their fear of being rejected for work because they were not thin enough."

It's such a crying shame that people do not know (because they are not told) that the fastest and safest way to lose weight is to give up dieting (because it is harmful) and to stop eating salt and salty food and dieting junk and to eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables.

Diet pill to put you off eating - and make you malnourished and ill...

Diet pill 'is as filling as a plate of pasta' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Italian scientists have invented a new diet pill that swells inside the stomach, giving its users the impression that they have already eaten.

"The sensation is like eating a nice plate of spaghetti," said Prof Luigi Ambrosio, who led the research.

The pill contains an extremely absorbent powder that expands to more than 1,000 times its initial size when combined with water.

Prof Ambrosio said a 500mg pill, washed down with two glasses of water, would create a tennis ball-sized lump in the stomach, making dieters feel full.

"We had one extremely important investor come to visit and he wanted to try the pill," he said. "He got very excited because he took one at 11 o'clock in the morning and at six o'clock in the afternoon he still couldn't finish an ice cream."

The pill was tested on 20 people for a month last year, and is being tested on a further 90 people at the Policlinico Gemelli hospital in Rome."

While it is unlikely to cure the disease, it may provide a way to prevent, slow down or reduce the impact of such illnesses which affect the mental abilities but not the physical health of sufferers."

I am sure that blueberries and other fruits are good for warding off degenerative diseases, but the MOST important preventive measure is to avoid eating salt/sodium and salty food.

Lose weight, lower your risk of Alzeimer's disease and stroke, lower your high cholesterol level and your high blood pressure, reduce your risk of heart disease and heart attack, and benefit your health in countless other ways by eating less salt! - Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! -

Information doctors give about what causes obesity is wrong and is the reason for increases in obesity. Now they want to damage fat children further!

Doctors: Obese children could be put into care - Telegraph

Extracts:

"Obese children under the age of 12 should be placed on the child protection register if social services believe their health is at risk, doctors said yesterday.

In the most extreme cases, medics believe they should also be taken away from their parents and put into care.

Their comments followed a BBC investigation which questioned 50 consultant paediatricians and found that obesity was a factor in at least 20 child protection cases in the last year.

A motion to be debated at the British Medical Association’s annual conference this month will call for overfeeding to be considered a form of parental neglect or abuse. "

"Doctors who spoke anonymously to the BBC said:

“We’re very lily-livered about this as a society.

"I have seen an obese child taken away from parents return to a normal body weight in a few months.”

“I’ve seen a 10-year-old who could only walk a few yards with a walking stick. Her diet of chips and high fat food could firmly be laid at the parents’ door. I believe they were killing her slowly”.
“Seeing a 10-year-old with diabetes and high blood pressure. He is at risk of heart disease in his 20s - the family will not make changes.”

“One 12-year-old boy came into hospital to be put on a diet. His family were caught smuggling in 1lb bars of chocolate for him.” "

I think it would be very wrong and harmful to remove children from their homes and families and restrict their food intake, when this is a damaging way to try to reduce obesity.

As you can read in the extracts above, and if you read the whole article in the Telegraph, no one is explaining that the cause of child obesity (and high blood pressure and early development of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, etc) is high sodium/salt intake, NOT overeating. - Overeating, so-called, is the consequence of the weight gained by fluid retention in children who have had salt and salty food instead of the low sodium meals that are best for children's health and proper development. - Obviously anyone, child or adult, who is carrying excess water round in their bloodstream, as a result of their body's difficulty in excreting excess sodium and the water it attracts to itself, needs extra food - extra calories - to carry and service that heavier body and to provide extra calories because of the extra heat the larger body loses from its greater surface area.

Coupled with these problems, fluid retention often causes fat retention too, because of shortage of calcium, magnesium and potassium. - Slim, healthy people who are not sensitive to salt simply excrete in the urine any excess salt and its attendant water, so they do not gain weight by fluid retention. - And any excess fat they eat is excreted in the faeces. (That calories in, calories out rubbish the 'experts' try to get us to believe is obviously nonsense: normal faeces contain a lot of fat. - Think about it - in many countries, animal dung is used as fuel: it obviously contains a lot of calories. - Slim people are not slim because they are virtuous and not greedy or lazy; they are slim because they are lucky and are not suffering from fluid retention and fat retention. They eat what they like and as much as they like and they do not gain weight because they excrete the excess.)

If your child is obese - or you are obese - the most important thing to do is cut down on intake of salt and salty food. The next most important thing is to eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables, because the potassium they contain helps to remove excess sodium and water from the body. - IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO DIET, AND INDEED DIETING IS HARMFUL. IT IS NECESSARY TO EAT PLENTY OF FOOD - REAL FOOD, NOT DIET RUBBISH. - REAL FOOD CONTAINS THE NUTRIENTS THE BODY REQUIRES. IT DOESN'T NEED ADDITIVE THIS AND ADDITIVE THAT; IT NEEDS FOOD.

If you think you may have fat retention as well as fluid retention - and that is probably the case - then you need extra calcium. Yoghurt can supply this, or you can get some calcium tablets from the chemist or the health food shop. The ones I take contain a mixture of calcium and magnesium as these both help with the fluid retention and the fat retention. - Your body will then start excreting some of the excess fat it contains. - Do not take magnesium tablets without calcium at the same time as it could cause diarrhoea. - You can read about the help that calcium provides on the BBC website, where the work of some Danish researchers is featured. - Here's an extract from an email I sent to someone who, like me, became sensitive to salt because of negligent prescribing of hormones by doctors who do not know enough about the dangerous drugs they prescribe:

"Danish research shows that eating extra dairy calcium, as in dairy yoghurt, increases, in a perfectly natural and safe, healthy way, the amount of fat lost in the faeces. It was shown on a BBC2 programme some weeks ago. -
BBC webpage about calcium from The Truth About Food series of programmes - Maybe you should copy the whole page in case it ever disappears from the BBC's website. - Note: it does not require you to eat less or reduce calorie intake - only to eat MORE calcium. - If you do try yoghurt, make sure it's ordinary dairy yoghurt, not the extremely low fat stuff."
