Lord Mancroft condemns poor nursing and poor hygiene at Bath's dirty Royal United Hospital.

Lord Mancroft attacks 'grubby, drunken' nurses

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"A Conservative peer has delivered a devastating attack on nurses who looked after him during a stay in hospital describing them as "grubby, drunken and promiscuous"."

"He told peers: "The nurses that looked after me were mostly grubby. We're talking about dirty fingernails, slipshod, lazy.

"It's a miracle I'm still alive. But worst of all my Lords they were drunken and promiscuous.

"How do I know that? Because if you're a patient and you're lying in a bed, and you're being nursed from either side, they talk across you as if you're not there.

"So I know exactly what they got up to the night before, and how much they drank, and I know exactly what they were planning to do the next night, and I can tell you, it's pretty horrifying.""

Partial sight restored to one of Robert McNichol's eyes by pioneering surgery using one of his son's teeth...

Tooth transplanted into eye to restore sight

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"A man blinded in an industrial explosion has regained partial sight after his son's tooth was transplanted into one of his eyes in a groundbreaking operation.

Robert McNichol, 57, from Co Sligo on Ireland's west coast, suffered the injury during an accident at his waste recycling business two years ago.

Doctors at University College Hospital Galway told him there was nothing they could do but, refusing to be deterred, he found an expert in the UK performing pioneering surgery.

Known as 00KP, it treats severe cases of blindness by using a tooth to hold in place a man-made lens in the eye socket.

Mr McNichol's son Robert Jnr, 23, volunteered one of his teeth when he heard about the revolutionary procedure."

"The operation was carried out at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton over several months ending last December.

The tooth was removed, chiselled through and a lens placed in its core.

It was then inserted into Mr Nichol's right eye after a series of gruelling operations."

"While he cannot see fully, the father of eight hopes that with time his sight will gradually improve and he can do everyday activities.

"It's pretty extensive stuff and a pretty rocky science, but I'm just over the moon that I can see and get around without a cane.""

Impressive stuff!

Do you want to avoid excessive weight gain during your pregnancy? - Here's what to do.

During pregnancy you become sensitive to salt so you need to avoid eating salt and salty food. Eating salt during pregnancy results in fluid retention and this results in weight gain. - Avoiding salt will also protect you from high blood pressure.

Trasylol was withdrawn in November after a study linked the medicine to kidney failure requiring dialysis and increased death of those patients.

Doctor says 22,000 died amid Bayer drug recall

The lives of 22,000 patients could have been saved if U.S. regulators had been quicker to remove a Bayer AG drug used to stem bleeding during open heart surgery, according to a medical researcher interviewed by CBS Television's 60 Minutes program. The drug Trasylol was withdrawn in November at the request of the FDA after an observational study linked the medicine to kidney failure requiring dialysis and increased death of those patients. It had been given to as many as a third of all heart bypass patients in the United States at the height of its use over a period of many years, according to the report.

Prescription drugs and over-the-counter drugs: legal and lethal...)o:

This is an article from the Times. It is long, but well worth reading.

Prescription drugs: legal and lethal

Extracts:

"In one of its less sensational aspects, our escalating fondness for taking drugs that won’t get you arrested can be measured in the 10% annual rise over the past three years in the use of antidepressants, notably our old friend Prozac. The NHS issued 31m scripts for Prozac in 2006, a blanket figure that, however it breaks down in terms of the numbers of users referred to, suggests that a lot of people are regularly taking a powerful antidepressant. Then there are the Valium guzzlers. The Council for Involuntary Tranquilliser Addiction (Cita), run by Liverpool University, guesstimates that there are as many as 1.5m nervous types in this country who have become accidentally addicted to benzodiazepines, the family of tranquillisers to which Valium belongs. Others take them knowingly, for fun. According to Professor Heather Ashton of Newcastle University, author of a pamphlet on addiction to benzodiazepines, these “are now taken illicitly in high doses by 90% of drug abusers worldwide. They are part of the drug scene”. So well integrated are they that abusers will crush the pills and snort or inject them, the same way they might cocaine or heroin.

More worrying in a way, because they attract less attention, are those habit-forming drugs that can be bought without prescription at high-street pharmacies. Concern about these has given rise to a new coinage in the world of drug dependency, “OTCs”, an abbreviation for painkillers bought “over the counter”. This usually refers to the more powerful varieties of OTCs, such as codeine, which contains synthetic opiates. At a conference of the General Medical Association in 2004 it was suggested that there might be 50,000 OTC addicts in Britain today. The authorities are also concerned about OTC drugs causing suicidal tendencies: the European Medicines Agency is calling for OTC drugs to come with a “suicide rating”."

"The prescription drugs causing most concern are antidepressants. Prozac, which has been around for 20-odd years, is old news. The two newcomers currently causing medical debate are the branded drugs Efexor and Cymbalta. These are classed as “selective seratonin and noradrenaline reuptake inhibitors”, or SSNRIs. The added “N” is what makes them special. Unlike Prozac and other SSRIs, these drugs do not simply increase levels of seratonin, the brain chemical that makes us feel more sociable and relaxed. They also boost adrenaline, making us more energetic and sometimes slightly manic."

Just because a doctor has prescribed it, it doesn't mean a drug is safe.

Taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement could reduce the risks of cancer and other age-related illnesses

Taking a daily multivitamin and mineral supplement could reduce the risks of cancer and other age-related illnesses, a scientist has claimed. Prof Bruce Ames, a biochemist and nutritional expert at the University of California, Berkeley, said excessive consumption of ready meals and fast food were to blame for increased rates of many cancers and degenerative diseases. Prof Ames suggested that faced with an inadequate supply of essential micronutrients the human body diverts them to key functions to ensure survival at the expense of long-term health.
Read article in the Daily Telegraph (UK)

Extract from the article:

"Speaking at the annual conference of the American Association for the Advancement, Prof Ames said: "A large body of evidence suggests that micronutrient inadequacy can lead to cancer and other long-term consequences.

"Significant chronic metabolic disruption may occur when consumption of a micronutrient is below the current recommended dietary allowance.

"Micronutrient inadequacies are widespread in the population, and a multivitamin-mineral (MVM) supplement in inexpensive.

"A solution is to encourage MVM supplementation, particularly in those groups with widespread deficiencies such as the poor, teenagers, the obese and the elderly, in addition to urging people to eating a more balanced diet."

Prof Ames carried out a review of previous research into the effects of inadequate levels of 40 micronutrients in the human diet.

Magnesium deficiency has been associated with bowel and other cancers, high blood pressure, osteoporosis and diabetes.

Insufficient Vitamin D in diets has been linked to colon, breast, pancreatic and prostate cancer, as well as cardiovascular disease. One study found women getting adequate vitamin D were 41 per cent less likely to get multiple sclerosis.

Another found that elderly men given potassium in table salt were 40 per cent less likely to develop cardiovascular disease than those with normal salt in their diet.

Research on laboratory mice have suggested a lack of selenium, found in nuts, cereals, meat, fish, and eggs, can cause DNA damage.

Calcium deficiency has been associated with diabetes, while a lack of Omega 3 fatty acid in diets has been linked to melanoma and other cancers."

Anti-depressants work 'no better than dummy pills'

Anti-depressants 'no better than dummy pills'

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Researchers discovered the drugs, which cost the taxpayer almost £300 million a year, generally work no better than dummy pills, and said exercise and therapy should first be prescribed instead.

Only a small group of patients with extreme depression showed any beneficial effect, the team from the University of Hull reported.
Prof Irving Kirsch, the lead researcher, said: "In the best interests of patients it is time for a change of emphasis to non-drug treatments and reserve these drugs for very severely depressed patients."
In England 31 million prescriptions were written for anti-depressants in 2006. More than half were for Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI).
The study, published in the journal Public Library of Science: Medicine, looked at the results of 35 clinical trials in the US involving 5,000 patients taking SSRIs, including Prozac, Efexor and Seroxat. Prof Kirsch said patients taking the drugs did improve, but so did those on a placebo - showing most of the effect was psychological.
He added: "One of the problems with anti-depressants is the risk of side-effects, such as an increased potential for suicide. Given that risk, it is important to know there are alternatives that seem to do as well or nearly as well but without the side-effects.""
31 million antidepressant prescriptions in a year in England is ludicrous! - Dangerous drugs like this should be avoided. Doctors' prescribing freedom should be curbed.

Non-drug therapies for depression include

a walk in the country (recommended by MIND, the mental health charity) and

improving nutrition by avoiding dieting (a well-known cause of depression) and avoiding eating salt and salty food.

Food Commission warns about additives in children's medicines

Warning on additives in children's medicines

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Additives linked to hyperactivity in children are still used as ingredients in some medicines used by youngsters, a report out today warns.

The Food Commission found that 28 of 70 medicines suitable for under-12s contained one or more of the additives."

"The seven E numbers included in the report were part of a Food Standards Agency study carried out by Southampton University.

Its research found that 17 paracetamol products contained one or more of the additives.

Four medicated throat syrups, two ibuprofen products and five brands of two different antibiotics also contained at least one of the seven E numbers each."

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"The fruit content of many fruit-flavoured drinks and snacks is either minimal or non-existent, according to a report published on Monday."

"Of 28 products examined by the campaign group the Food Commission, only 11 contained real strawberries.

Five of these - Jordans Frusli All Fruit Strawberry bars, Jubbly Strawberry ice lollies, Asda Great Stuff Strawberry Milk and strawberry teabags produced by Sainsbury's and Tesco - contained less than one per cent real strawberries."

"Alpen strawberry & yoghurt bars: Contain more sugar and vegetable oil than strawberries, which make up 1.3 per cent of the ingredients - equivalent to 0.3g per bar.

Strawberry flavour Angel Delight: Lots of sugar, starch and additives but no strawberries.

Ribena strawberry juice drink: Found to have the highest real strawberry content of all the products tested - six per cent. Each carton also contains 31.4g of sugar - equivalent to almost eight teaspoons.

Hartley's strawberry jelly: The box says it has a "new fruitier taste", but the product still contains no strawberry at all.

Frijj strawberry milkshake: No artificial flavourings but no strawberries either.

Ambrosia strawberry flavour custard: The lid says "No artificial colours or flavours" and "No artificial sweeteners or preservatives". It does not mention "No strawberries", which would be equally true."

Alcohol is damaging the health of Britain's children

Drink sends 1,000 children a year to hospital

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Doctors said that without urgent action the spread of drinking among Britain's children would "destroy a generation". In England alone last year, 1,340 under-14s were admitted to hospitals because of alcohol problems.

Dr Rajiv Jalan, a liver expert from the Institute of Hepatology, said that doctors fear five years of childhood drinking could do as much damage as two decades in adulthood. He said that alcohol had a massive effect on a growing child, preventing the proper growth of all the organs, including the brain.

"We are now seeing children as young as 10 and 11 drinking," he said. "We are already seeing 20-year-olds with cirrhosis of the liver and it is only a matter of time before we see that in teenagers.

"We need to act now, because if we wait 20 years we will destroy a generation. It usually takes about 10 or 20 years of drinking above safe limits to cause irreparable damage in adults, but we think it could be as little as five in children.""

Viagra may harm men's fertility, report warns

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"The anti-impotence drug Viagra could harm men's fertility, scientists have warned.

New research suggests that the drug can damage sperm and so prevent some men from starting a family.

The findings mean that young men who take the drug recreationally could be damaging their chances of starting a family.

Likewise, fertility clinics that prescribe the drug to help men produce sperm could be preventing couples from getting pregnant.

The research was led by Dr David Glenn, a consultant gynaecologist at Queen's University Belfast, and will be published in the journal Fertility and Sterility."

There are no calories in salt - but if you cut down on salt you will easily lose weight. If you cut down on calories you will not lose weight.

There are no calories in salt - but if you are overweight/obese and you cut down on salt you will easily lose weight. If you cut down on calories you will not lose weight.

This is because obesity is caused by salt sensitivity/fluid retention and not by eating too many calories. This is why diets and calorie-counting do not work.

You do not need to eat less food to lose excess weight, because eating less food does not reduce fluid retention. Eating less salt reduces fluid retention and that is how it reduces obesity.

Cut children's salt intake to fight obesity. This will reduce the fluid retention that has caused them to become obese.

Cut children's salt intake to fight obesity

The so-called research in this Telegraph article claims that:

"Children who eat a lot of salt also consume more sugary drinks, increasing their risk of obesity, scientists have warned.

British researchers claim that cutting a child's salt intake by half can lead to a drop in the number of cans of fizzy drink they consume.

Children who halved their consumption of salt to 3g per day also cut out two cans of fizzy drinks a week, reducing their total calories by 250 a week."

This is utter tripe! - It is certainly true that reducing salt intake reduces weight - that, after all, is what this blog of mine is all about...(o: - But it reduces weight because it reduces fluid retention, NOT because it reduces calorie intake. - It has been demonstrated times without number that dieting (i.e. eating fewer calories) causes weight gain, not weight loss. - It is the salt reduction that causes weight loss, not any calorie reduction.

Here are the scientists who are promulgating this misinformation:

"The research, published last night in Hypertension, the journal of the American Heart Association, found lowering salt consumption by 1g a day would reduce consumption of sugary drinks by 27g a day.

For the study a team from St George's University of London, in Tooting, South London, analysed the records of 2,000 children aged between four and 18 from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey conducted in 1997."

Women should have just one embryo implanted during fertility treatment to cut the chance of them having more risky twin births, experts warn.

One embryo at a time 'makes IVF less risky'

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Women should have just one embryo implanted during fertility treatment to cut the chance of them having more risky twin births, experts warn.

The call to cut the number of multiple pregnancies created through IVF came as a British study showed that an emerging technique can achieve the same success rate with just one embryo as two.

Most women receiving IVF treatment are implanted with two or more embryos at one time, to maximise their chances of becoming pregnant.

The practice has led to a boom in multiple births - twins now make up one in four IVF births, compared to just one in 80 of those naturally conceived.

But twins or triplets are more likely to die before or during birth, or have profound disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

Scientists estimate 126 fewer babies would die every year if all IVF children were single births.

Dr Gillian Lockwood, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists's ethics committee, said some IVF patients should be given one embryo to limit the number of multiple births.

"Multiple pregnancies do not give you two for the price of one," she said, "they carry with them significant risks and dangers."

Dr Lockwood, who is also medical director at Midland Fertility Services, near Birmingham, said the lifetime costs of treating cerebral palsy can run into millions, money which she said could be spent on extra courses of IVF.

But the college warned that patients would continue to ignore the dangers posed by multiple pregnancies while they were offered just one course of IVF on the NHS.

A new study, published in the BJOG journal, shows that a technique which uses just one embryo has a better success rate in many patients than traditional IVF."

If you are infertile because you are overweight/obese, you can greatly improve your situation by avoiding eating salt and salty food. This reduces fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity.

Possible harmful effects from the radiation from DECT cordless phones

After cancer warnings on mobiles, could your home phone be putting your health in danger?

Extract from the Daily Mail:

"These phones operate using the same technology as wi-fi computer systems and mobile phones - with the base station acting like a miniature mobile phone mast.

A recent survey by the Dutch Electrohypersensitivity Foundation has found that digitally enhanced cordless telephones - Dects - are the main source of radiation in homes that have them.

The researchers claimed that they frequently cause headaches, fatigue, heart palpitations and concentration and sleep problems.

According to cancer specialist Professor Lennart Hardell from the University Hospital, in Orebro, Sweden: "The risks are the same as for mobiles, but they haven't been studied because researchers thought the Dect operated like a landline."

One of the few scientists to have included cordless phones in his studies, Professor Hardell's research suggests that habitual users have a three-fold risk of acoustic neuroma (a benign tumour between the ear and brain) and a four-fold risk of a malignant brain tumour."

Laura Moon has discovered that she has four kidneys and hopes that she may be able to help a kidney patient by donating one or two of them.

How many people have four kidneys?
This is a Guardian article and here is an extract from it:

"People with extra kidneys are often oblivious to their excess baggage, and only discover it after an ultrasound scan or surgery for a more urgent medical problem. Laura Moon, an 18-year-old from Whinmoor near Leeds, heard of her bonus kidneys during an ultrasound to investigate recurrent stomach pains. Her case is particularly unusual, as each of her kidneys appears to be fully formed, at around 11cm long.

"It's extremely rare for additional kidneys to be complete. One in a million is probably about right," says Niaz Ahmad, a transplant surgeon at St James's University Hospital in Leeds. "I've seen thousands of kidneys and I've never seen this."

The condition is caused by a glitch in the first trimester, when the developing kidneys split in two. It is more common for these "duplex kidneys" to split only partially, or to grow a second ureter (the tube that drains urine into the bladder). Moon is having tests to check her four kidneys all work properly. If they do, she may be able to donate one or two."

You can reduce your risk of kidney failure by avoiding taking prescription drugs that cause sodium retention, e.g. steroids like prednisolone, and antidepressants like amitriptyline, unless they are absolutely necessary, and by reducing your salt/sodium intake to a minimum.

A and E "patient stacking" lunacy

A&E patients 'left in ambulances for hours'

Extract from Telegraph article:

"Seriously ill patients are left for hours in ambulances instead of being immediately admitted to accident and emergency departments to meet a Government target on treatment times, it was claimed yesterday.

The practice of "patient stacking" has left some waiting for up to five hours because A&E units have refused to admit them until they can be treated within the four-hour time limit.

Unison, the public sector union, said the practice poses a danger to other patients because ambulances detained as "waiting rooms" cannot answer new 999 calls.

Mary Maguire, a spokesman for the union, said: "This happens time and time again. It is an appalling waste of resources. We should not use ambulances as waiting rooms.

"A 16-year-old terminally ill cancer patient died after waiting over an hour for an ambulance to transfer him. Three ambulances could have reached him but they were tied up waiting to hand over patients to A&E."

Dr Steve Field, the chairman of the Royal College of GPs, called the situation ''entirely inappropriate and unacceptable".

Evidence of patient stacking is revealed in the official ''turnaround time" data released by seven of England's 11 regional ambulance services.

The figures show that over the past 15 months at least 44,000 delays were reported by the ambulance services. In some cases the delays were up to five hours."

This "patient stacking" is lunacy!

The Government-funded School Food Trust is suggesting that schools be told to stop serving hot tea to under-16s on health and safety grounds!

Schools face ban on serving tea to under-16s

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Schools could be told to stop serving hot tea to under-16s on health and safety grounds.

The Government-funded School Food Trust said restrictions may be added to guidelines on drinks approved for consumption in state schools.

In a consultation document, it said hot coffee and tea had "minimal" nutritional benefits and posed potential safety risks.

Draft guidelines - part of a drive to improve the quality of food served in schools - said any drinks served in schools in addition to water "should offer clear nutritional benefit"."

This seems foolish and unnecessary to me. - Tea and coffee are probably much healthier drinks than children often have - certainly far healthier than coke and diet drinks... - I bet all of the adults suggesting these restrictions drink tea and coffee themselves...

And the milk in tea and coffee is very good for children, providing them with dairy calcium.

Obesity increases risk of many cancers. - Both obesity and these cancers and other illnesses are the result of years of medical experts' wrong advice

Extra two stones boosts risk of cancer

The link is to a Telegraph article. - I have been warning for years that obesity greatly increases the risk of most cancers. - And I have been explaining for years that the answer to the obesity crisis is for people to be told the truth about obesity - i.e. that it is not caused by overeating, but by fluid retention in people who have become sensitive to salt. - Reducing salt intake rapidly and safely reduces excess weight in obese people. - Very sadly, dieting/'slimming'/calorie reduction does not reduce excess weight AT ALL. And yet health professionals and others routinely advise obese people to eat less. Dieting usually causes weight increase in overweight people because it further weakens the blood vessel walls and therefore increases fluid retention, which is why weight increases.

Extract from the article:

"The chance of developing five different types of cancer increases by 50 per cent if your weight goes up by more than two stones, according to new research.

A study at the University of Manchester found that those who put on weight equivalent to a five-point increase in the body mass index (BMI) were at significant risk of contracting cancer of the colon, breast, skin, thyroid.

The increase in BMI is equivalent to two-and-a-half stones (18.9kg) for a healthy man of average height, 5ft 9ins (1.75m), and almost two stones (12.6kg) for a healthy woman of average height, 5ft 4ins (1.63m).

Men who gained that amount of weight were 50 per cent more likely to develop oesophageal cancer and a third more likely to suffer thyroid cancer. Their chances of getting colon and kidney cancer increase by 24 per cent; they are also at a smaller but significant risk of rectal and skin cancer.

Women who are similarly overweight increase their chances of cancer of the womb lining and gallbladder by 59 per cent. They also have more than a 50 per cent increased risk of oesophageal cancer and are a third more likely to develop kidney cancer.

The chances of women getting pancreatic, thyroid, and colon cancer increased significantly if they were overweight, but were not as great as the risk for men."

To lose weight obese people need to avoid eating salt and salty food.

Wider implications of the flawed theory that excess calorie intake causes obesity

A component of black pepper may offer future help to people with vitiligo, a condition that causes pale patches to develop on the skin.

Black pepper could cure skin condition

Extract from the Telegraph:

"A key component of black pepper could offer hope to people suffering vitiligo, a condition that causes pale patches to develop on the skin.

A study on mice found that the compound piperine, which makes black pepper pungent, can stimulate the skin to produce pigment.

Some derivatives of the compound created in the laboratory have a similar effect, the study showed.

Results were better when the compounds were used alongside a standard therapy involving ultraviolet light.

Vitiligo is a fairly common condition that affects around one in 100 people in the UK.

It causes pale, white patches to develop on the skin due to a lack of the pigment melanin.

Melanin gives the skin its colour and helps protect it from the sun's harmful rays.

Vitiligo is commonly noticeable on the face, neck and hands and can be particularly pronounced in people with darker skins.

The research by King's College London was published in the British Journal of Dermatology.

Professor Antony Young, a photobiologist at St John's Institute of Dermatology at King's and one of the study's authors, said: "We have shown that topical treatment with piperine stimulates even pigmentation in the skin."

FDA Links Anti-Wrinkle Drug, Botox, to Deaths

FDA Links Anti-Wrinkle Drugs to Deaths

The popular anti-wrinkle drug Botox and a competitor have been linked to dangerous botulism symptoms in some users, cases so bad that a few children given the drugs for muscle spasms have died, the government warned Friday. The Food and Drug Administration's warning includes both Botox, a wrinkle-specific version called Botox Cosmetic, and its competitor, Myobloc, drugs that all use botulinum toxin to block nerve impulses, causing them to relax. In rare cases, the toxin can spread beyond the injection site to other parts of the body, paralyzing or weakening the muscles used for breathing and swallowing, a potentially fatal side effect, the FDA said.

More about the case of murdered baby Jessica and the non-accountablity of the so-called caring professions/agencies who failed to protect her.

We're failing vulnerable children

Extract from Telegraph blog:

"When will the Government – any Government – ever get to grips with the appalling lack of co-ordination and disgraceful blame-denial that goes on amongst our so-called ‘caring’ agencies whenever we have a case , such as that reported today of little Jessica Randall.

She was only 54 days old when she died but during her tragically short life this baby was sexually abused and repeatedly battered by Andrew, her monster of a father. In spite of spending half of her life in Kettering General Hospital and having been seen by 30 health workers and visited at her home ten times, nobody appeared to know what was going on and nobody apparently suspected the systematic abuse to which she was being subjected.

When she died she had a fractured skull and numerous broken ribs.

Yet there they were on the Ten O’Clock News last night, a whole row of them – the representatives of the medical, nursing, social work and other agency staff whose main role is to supposed to be protect and safeguard the most vulnerable in society, yet are so often found wanting.

Nobody who saw this little girl thought it advisable to report Jessica has being at risk. And as is usual in such cases of horrific child abuse nobody but nobody is to blame, at least according to the official report, which was not as far as those involved were concerned, a “whitewash”."

You can't credit cruelty like this. - The terrible suffering of murdered baby Jessica at the hands of her sadistic father.

Murdered baby was seen by 30 health workers

Extract from the Telegraph:

"A baby who was beaten and sexually abused before being murdered by her sadistic father had been seen by 30 health workers, a primary care trust has said.

Jessica Randall suffered a series of injuries at the hands of her father Andrew, including broken ribs and a fractured skull.

She was 54 days old when she died.

A report has revealed that Jessica, whose mother was schizophrenic, spent nearly half her life in hospital.

She was seen by 30 health workers and had also been seen at home on 10 separate occasions.

Yet no one noticed what was happening, so the emergency child protection procedures that could have led to her being removed from her family were not triggered.

However, the report from the Safeguarding Children Board for Northamptonshire failed to blame any individuals for Jessica's death.

Randall, 33, was jailed for life last March after admitting murdering his daughter. He was told by a judge that he would never be released.

He had abused and sexually assaulted Jessica, who was born five weeks prematurely with a heart defect, from "the moment she left hospital".

Randall fantasised about having control over women and had written poems about wanting to kill. At one stage he forced three fingers down his daughter's throat and on other occasions held her arms and legs and twisted her as if he were wringing a cloth."

Spam processed meat and corned beef fuel South Pacific obesity crisis because of their high salt content.

Spam at heart of South Pacific obesity crisis

Extract from the Telegraph:

""Even if you go into a store in a remote village you'll find shelves of Spam and corned beef," said Dr Jan Pryor, the director of research at the Fiji School of Medicine.

"In the past it was unusual for anyone to have a stroke under 50, now people are having strokes in their twenties and thirties. You see it every day."

Figures from the World Health Organisation show that Pacific island nations make up eight of the world's 10 most obese countries.

"What we have in this country is a raging epidemic. We have 6,000 to 8,000 cases of diabetes out of a population of 53,000 people," said Carl Hacker, the director of economic policy and planning in the Marshall Islands.

"What is unfolding here is a physical disaster and a fiscal disaster."

The single-island nation of Nauru, which faces economic disaster in the wake of its Australian-run refugee detention centre closing down last week, heads the list with 94.5 per cent of people older than 15 defined as obese.

Similar problems are repeated across the South Pacific. "

In praise of tomatoes... Very good for your health...

Tomatoes: The humble superfood in your salad

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Pomegranates, pumpkin seeds, green tea, goji berries and, most recently, beetroot have all jostled for position at the top of the superfood tree. But never has the case for the superfood crown been argued more persuasively than it has now for the humble tomato.

In his new book, The Red Bodyguard, pharmacist Ron Levin has, for the first time, collated decades of research confirming the powerful health-giving credentials of this everyday fruit.

Tomatoes contain high levels of beta-carotene, an antioxidant that supports the immune system and helps maintain healthy skin and tissue lining. They are packed with antioxidant flavonoids and vitamin E, both of which are essential for heart health, and are a good source of potassium. One medium-size tomato provides 50 per cent of the recommended daily dose of vitamin C; they contain no saturated fatty acids, are low in salt, starch and sugars, high in dietary fibre and have a low glycaemic index.

But that's not all. Tomatoes are the richest source of an exceptionally potent antioxidant called lycopene - the pigment that gives them their deep red colour. A single lycopene molecule can neutralise 13 free radicals which, if allowed to build up, can cause cell damage and trigger cancer - that's twice the free radical busting power of beta-carotene, another powerful antioxidant."

Self-cleaning wool and silk developed using nanotechnology

Self-cleaning wool and silk developed using nanotechnology

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Wool socks, skirts and silk ties may soon clean themselves of smells and stains in the sunshine, researchers in Australia and China suggest.

The secret is a nano particle coating, one already used to keep windows clear, that could lead to "self-cleaning" versions of wool and silk fabrics.

Wool and silk, which are composed of natural proteins called keratins, are among the most prized and widely used fabrics in the clothing industry. However, they are difficult to keep clean and are easily damaged by conventional cleaning agents.

In the new study, scheduled for publication in the journal Chemistry of Materials, Dr Walid Daoud of Monash University, Victoria, Australia, and colleagues prepared wool fabrics with and without a nanoparticle coating - particles around five nanometres across (five billionths of a metre) composed of anatase titanium dioxide, a substance already used as a pigment that is known to break down and destroy contaminants upon exposure to sunlight.

"The self-cleaning technology in our work uses titanium dioxide photocatalyst that when triggered by light, it decomposes dirt, stains, harmful microorganisms and so on," says Dr Daoud.

The researchers then stained the fabric samples with red wine. After 20 hours of exposure to simulated sunlight, the coated fabric showed almost no signs of the red stain, whereas the untreated fabric remained deeply stained, the researchers say."

"As for when self-cleaning socks could be on the market, Dr Daoud tells The Telegraph: "It is anticipated that as soon as the technology receives the approval technically and economically, you will then be able to see the product in the market. Currently, industrial testing and mill trials of this patent-pending technology are being conducted."

He adds: "I believe that self-cleaning property will become a standard feature of future textile and other commonly used materials to maintain hygiene and prevent the spreading of pathogenic infection. Particularly since pathogenic microorganisms can survive on textile surfaces for up to three months.

"Self-cleaning technology can also help in reducing the consumption of chemicals, such as detergents and dry-cleaning solvents, water, and energy.""

Embryos get destroyed by fertility clinics' mistakes

Embryos destroyed by fumbling clinics

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Hundreds of accidents at fertility clinics have led to couples' precious embryos being lost, damaged or destroyed, the Government has admitted.

More than 500 "adverse incidents" have been recorded by clinics since 2003, with a sharp rise in the number of errors reported last year.

Errors typically involved the loss of embryos, eggs or sperm through staff dropping dishes, tripping when holding them or accidentally throwing them away.

Failures of equipment also compromised the survival of embryos, including power failures affecting vital electrical equipment."

'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problem. - This is the latest drivel purporting to be useful research about obesity...

'Fat genes' a major cause of weight problems
This article is in the Telegraph.

It's so stupid. - How could genetic inheritance change so markedly in a period of a decade or two? - This is nonsense. - Obesity is caused by fluid retention, and fluid retention is related to salt sensitivity in groups vulnerable to salt. One of the groups vulnerable to salt is small children. (Note: obesity is caused by fluid retention - NOT by overeating. - You know loads of people who eat vast amounts of food and take no exercise and are as slim as reeds. - Clearly overeating does not cause obesity.) - Fluid retention (and therefore weight) is reduced when salt intake is reduced.

(I note the 'research' was funded by Cancer Research UK and others and this reinforces my low opinion of Cancer Research UK...)o: - They should be telling people the truth about salt and how salt reduction is the safest and most reliable way to reduce your risk of developing cancer.)

When children become fat it is essentially because they are eating salty food. Children are especially vulnerable to salt because of their small size and small blood volume, and because their blood vessels are weaker than those of adults. Salt, and the water it attracts to it, can more easily distend weak blood vessels than fully mature ones. The resulting increase in blood volume and other fluid retention results in weight gain, as well as higher blood pressure and many other undesirable consequences. The smaller the child, the less salt they should have - and a baby, of course, should have no salt at all.

Because children have much smaller bodies than adults it would be best if they had no more than half as much salt as adults. Most children, however, have much more than this because they eat so many snacks and instant foods.

There are high amounts of salt in packet soups, instant noodles, crisps, ketchup and sauces, sausages, burgers and savoury snacks. Fat children will lose weight fast if they eat less salt. And even faster still if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and unsalted vegetables, because these are rich in potassium, which helps to displace sodium from the body.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

A midwife and senior medical staff could face prosecution after an inquest found that a new mother who died was unlawfully killed.

Hospital could be charged over fatal epidural

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"A midwife and senior medical staff could face prosecution after an inquest found that a new mother who died after she was given an epidural in her arm instead of her back was unlawfully killed.

Mayra Cabrera, 30, a nurse, suffered a heart attack caused by the anaesthetic within three hours of giving birth to her son, Zac, at the hospital where she worked in May, 2004.

An inquest heard how the tragedy happened after Sister Marie To, a midwife at the Great Western Hospital in Swindon, Wilts, allegedly attached the drip bag containing the epidural to a line going into Mrs Cabrera's arm, rather than one going into her back.

On Tuesday a jury said gross negligence by Swindon and Marlborough NHS Trust, specifically sub-standard storage of drugs in the maternity unit, led to Mrs Cabrera's death.

The verdict said she was "killed unlawfully, gross negligent manslaughter"."

"Gross negligence manslaughter applies equally to both the corporate body and individuals if there is evidence that a breach of duty of care is so great as to be characterised as gross negligence.

Speaking after the hearing, Mrs Cabrera's husband, Arnel, 38, who worked as a technician at the hospital, said: "Mayra was my love and my life. We were overjoyed when Zac was born. However our life was ripped apart by the action of a midwife who failed to check the fluid she gave to my wife.

"She had six opportunities to check the fluid. Had she done so, Mayra would have been alive today. The midwife's failure to accept responsibility or show any remorse for her actions has made me very bitter and angry. I cannot forgive her.""

"David Masters, the Wiltshire coroner, said he would be writing to the Health Secretary to recommend a series of changes, in particular the introduction of epidural use-only equipment.

He would also be writing to the trust to recommend improvements in storage systems, training and administration in the maternity unit.

In 1994 and 2001 there were similar, non-fatal, bupivacaine errors at the old Princess Margaret Hospital in Swindon.

The hospital trust subsequently introduced a policy to store the drugs in locked cupboards but the inquest heard that when the hospital moved to its new site in Swindon in 2002, the policy was ignored."

But tests carried out by 2,000 ordinary women has shown the answer may lie in Aldi, the budget supermarket, where the Siana Moisturising Anti-Wrinkle Cream beat off dozens of more expensive products to be named as the best anti-ageing cream on the market."

Surgeons at a Bristol hospital 'failed to check baby after operation'

Surgeons 'failed to check baby after operation'

Extract from the Telegraph:

"A woman suffered brain damage as a new-born baby 22 years ago because heart surgeons failed to check on her for 60 hours after a botched operation, the High Court has heard.

Marianna Telles was treated for a heart defect during the scandal of multiple baby deaths at a Bristol hospital in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Her mother, Anna Redman, was in court yesterday after years of battling to sue the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

The surgeons involved were Janardan Dhasmana, who was banned from operating on children after an inquiry, and James Wisheart, a senior surgeon, who was struck off."

There is a huge amount of medical negligence in Britain, mainly, no doubt, because of the routine cover-up that usually is practised by medical colleagues and administrative staff. The system is notoriously self-serving, and whistle-blowing is regarded by the medical profession as more heinous than the negligence itself. - You can get a taste of this by reading this one account from out of the thousands of examples I could have chosen - Medical Scandal in Bristol
Monday 29 June 1998

In addition to the terrible avoidable suffering the negligence causes for its victims, there is the indefensible appalling wait to get to court if the victims decide to sue. - Just imagine! - That poor mother and her damaged daughter have waited decades to get to court. - This is par for the course and is a deliberate tactic medical defence lawyers employ. Many victims die before they get to court - and this, of course, is one of the objectives of the engineered delays. - Another objective is to wear out the plaintiffs so that they do not have sufficient energy, time or cash to continue the battle. - The discredited profession that likes to trumpet "medical ethics" should look to its disgraceful, unethical treatment of its many suffering victims.
