I watched Fish Unwrapped tonight on Channel 4 Dispatches

I watched Fish Unwrapped on Channel 4's Dispatches tonight, excellently presented by Alex Thomson. The lax hygiene standards, poor adherence to regulations, and inadequate inspection that obtain in some of the fishing areas from where the UK sources its fish led me to conclude that consumers here cannot trust the safety of much of the fish on sale in supermarkets. If you and your family ever eat fish fingers I suggest you watch this programme using the link I have given. I think you may well decide not to eat them any more. And I suspect there will be fewer takers for prawns after watching the programme: the thought of eating prawns injected with dirty liquid to bulk them up in order to sell the dirty liquid at the same price as the prawns... - Yuk! - Dunno quite what to recommend except that getting out of the EU would be a start, since the EU favours big business and the food industry over mere consumers/taxpayers.

Britain still permits controversial chemical Bisphenol-A to be used in the manufacture of a range of plastic products, including water bottles and the lining of food and beverage cans, like "the lining of 18 out of 20 best-selling canned food items including Heinz baked beans, Napolina tomatoes, and John West and Princes fish, as well as in tuna and sardines cans from major UK retailers Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda."

Food Alert about certain Loyd Grossman sauces

BBC News reports that "Batches of Loyd Grossman sauces are being recalled over fears that they may contain pieces of glass.

The food alert affects batch codes 9316 and 9317 of the chef's tomato and chilli pasta sauce jars."

Some Tesco stores not hygienic enough

The Telegraph reports that many supermarket stores are not reaching a high enough standard of hygiene, and that Tesco has been found to be the least hygienic of the big four supermarkets. Of all the supermarkets, Waitrose and Marks & Spencer were the most hygienic.

A delicatessen owned by the celebrity chef James Martin has been branded unhygienic by health inspectors.

"An investigation into the Cadogan and James deli in Winchester, Hants, found mould in a chiller cabinet where meats are kept, poor hand hygiene and said the eatery failed to implement a food safety management system.

The investigation, by Winchester City Council as part of its safe2eat initiative, which gives members of the public information about places that sell food, also reported dirty work surfaces and chopping boards and said cleaning methods were "ineffective".

It also suggested "an overall lack of hygiene e.g utensils not cleaned, hands not washed, or inadequate temperature control".

Many pre-packaged salads contain bacteria which can cause potentially deadly food poisoning.

"Food safety experts are calling for stricter production controls on ready-to-eat salads after tests revealed that many contain bacteria which can cause potentially deadly food poisoning.

A report compiled by the government's Health Protection Agency (HPA), found that one in 10 pre-packaged salads containing meat or seafood was contaminated with the listeria bacteria. Evidence of E. coli and salmonella was found in some bags of salad.
The HPA report, which involved testing more than 2,600 ready-to-eat salads, concluded that the control of bacteria in food manufacturing and in shops was essential to minimise the potential for hazardous food contamination."

"Plans to allow genetically modified crops to be grown throughout Europe have been shelved amid fears of a public backlash against "Frankenstein foods".

The European Commission has failed to find enough support for its plans to lift a nine-year-old freeze on GM crops being grown on a commercial basis.

Officials were forced to drop plans to produce a penicillin-resistant GM potato after it became clear that a bloc of countries led by Austria, Greece and Luxembourg would vote against it.

Commission proposals to release the potato, developed by BASF for use in industrial starch, were withdrawn by the German EU presidency ahead of a meeting of Europe's environment ministers last week.

"It became clear that there was no way to get a majority for the first approval of a GM crop since 1998, so it has been taken off the agenda," said an official.

Many EU governments are strongly swayed by the campaign against GM foods which sprang up in the late 1990s. This is despite scientific advice, the approval of the European Food Safety Authority and the growing threat of a trade war with the US.

"Consumers, most of whom have no desire to eat GM produce, expect politicians to put their health, food safety and the environment before the vested interests of a few agro-chemical companies," said a Greenpeace spokesman yesterday."
