Is your use of mobile phones putting you at risk of brain cancer?

The Telegraph reports on increasing numbers of brain cancers which appear to be associated with long-term use of mobile phones. It is likely that using mobile phones from an early age increases the risk of radiation damage.

France has launched a multi-pronged effort to curb the use of mobile phones by children, amid fears that cellphones cause cancer and other illnesses.

France bans ads pitching mobile telephones to children
article in the Sunday Telegraph

Extract:

"Any advertisements encouraging children under 12 to use the devices are set to be banned, with warnings that children under six are particularly at risk.

It will also become illegal to sell a mobile without earphones and there will be limits set on the amount of radiation that a phone is allowed to emit.

The legislation, announced by Jean-Louis Borloo, Environment Minister, represents the first time that a European government has seriously confronted the widely-disputed health dangers of mobile use.

It contrasts sharply with the position in Britain, where the government has largely ignored the recommendations of an official report nine years ago that under 16s should be discouraged from using mobiles."

Why mobile phones may hurt backs.

Why mobile phones may hurt backs
article on the BBC news website. - The article is from 5 years ago, but I've only just come across it.

Extracts:

"People who chat on their mobile phone while walking could be hurting their back, according to a study. Scientists at Australia's University of Queensland say it's all down to the way we breathe."
"Dr Matthew Bennett, a spokesman for the British Chiropractic Association, welcomed the study.
"This is completely surprising," he told BBC News Online. "This is totally new research.
"It shows that we really shouldn't be talking and walking at the same time. Talking appears to disrupt our ability to walk efficiently.
"This is something we will now have to add to our list. People with bad backs should watch the way they bend to pick things up, shouldn't sit for too long and now it would seem shouldn't talk with someone they are walking with.
"This is particularly important for mobile phone users. We already know that holding a phone to your ear for long periods is bad for you, because it can increase tension across the shoulder and cause pain." "

Regular mobile phone use is leading to an increasing number of people developing an itchy skin condition, doctors have warned.

Mobile phone use causes rise in skin problem
Article in the Telegraph

Extracts:

"Skin specialists are reporting a new phenomenon they are dubbing 'mobile phone dermatitis' where metals used in the phone handset is irritating the skin on the face.

Around one third of people are sensitive to nickel which is used extensively in mobile phone handsets, including the buttons and the surround of the screen.

All doctors should be alert that these people are at risk of developing dermatitis on their face if they use their phone regularly, the British Association of Dermatologists has said."

"Dr Graham Lowe, from the British Association of Dermatologists, said: "The allergy results from frequent skin contact with nickel-containing objects. Prolonged or repetitive contact with a nickel-containing phone is more likely to cause a skin reaction in those who are allergic. If you have had a previous reaction to a nickel-coated belt-buckle or jewellery, for example, you are at greater risk of reacting to metal phones.

"In mobile phone dermatitis, the rash would typically occur on the cheek or ear, depending on where the metal part of the phone comes into contact with the skin. In theory it could even occur on the fingers if you spend a lot of time texting on metal menu buttons.

"It is worth doctors bearing this condition in mind if they see a patient with a rash on the cheek or ear that cannot otherwise be explained.""

Children should only use mobile phones in emergencies and adults should try and keep them away from their heads, a leading cancer expert has said

US cancer expert Ronald Herberman warns against children using mobile phones
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Ronald Herberman, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute director, issued the warning as he urged mobile users to protect themselves from cancer risks.

Dr Herberman made the pronouncement in an internal memo to thousands of staff saying it was based on early unpublished data on the possible risk of brain cancer.

"We shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Dr Herberman said.

"I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use."

His warning came even though no major academic study has yet found any evidence that exposure to mobile phone signals affects brain function and the US Food and Drug Administration has said that, if there is a risk, it is probably very small.

Dr Heberman, however, said there was a "growing body of literature" which linked long-term mobile phone use with adverse health effects, including cancer."

Warning: Using a mobile phone while pregnant can seriously damage your baby, according to research

Warning: Using a mobile phone while pregnant can seriously damage your baby

Extracts from the Independent on Sunday:

"Women who use mobile phones when pregnant are more likely to give birth to children with behavioural problems, according to authoritative research.

A giant study, which surveyed more than 13,000 children, found that using the handsets just two or three times a day was enough to raise the risk of their babies developing hyperactivity and difficulties with conduct, emotions and relationships by the time they reached school age. And it adds that the likelihood is even greater if the children themselves used the phones before the age of seven.

The results of the study, the first of its kind, have taken the top scientists who conducted it by surprise. But they follow warnings against both pregnant women and children using mobiles by the official Russian radiation watchdog body, which believes that the peril they pose "is not much lower than the risk to children's health from tobacco or alcohol".

The research – at the universities of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and Aarhus, Denmark – is to be published in the July issue of the journal Epidemiology and will carry particular weight because one of its authors has been sceptical that mobile phones pose a risk to health."

"Professor Sam Milham, of the blue-chip Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, and the University of Washington School of Public Health – one of the pioneers of research in the field – said last week that he had no doubt that the results were real. He pointed out that recent Canadian research on pregnant rats exposed to similar radiation had found structural changes in their offspring's brains.

The Russian National Committee on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection says that use of the phones by both pregnant women and children should be "limited". It concludes that children who talk on the handsets are likely to suffer from "disruption of memory, decline of attention, diminishing learning and cognitive abilities, increased irritability" in the short term, and that longer-term hazards include "depressive syndrome" and "degeneration of the nervous structures of the brain"."

Children should not be given mobile phones because of cancer risk...

Mobile phone cancer risk 'higher for children' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Children should not be given mobile phones because using them for more than 10 years increases the risk of brain cancer, a leading scientist has said.

Have your say: Will health warnings make you use your mobile less?

People who have used their phone for a decade are twice as likely to be diagnosed with a tumour on a nerve connecting the ear to the brain, according to a group of scientists who have surveyed the results of 11 different studies.

Prof Kjell Mild, of Orbero University, Sweden, who is a Government adviser and led the research, said that children should not be allowed to use mobile phones because their thinner skulls and developing nervous system made them particularly vulnerable.

His study comes just a month after a separate piece of research, jointly funded by the Government and the mobile phone industry, found there was only a "very faint hint" of a link between long-term use of mobile phones and brain tumours.

This six-year, £8.8 million Mobile Telecommunications and Health Research (MTHR) programme came under fire for failing to investigate more thoroughly those who had used their phones for more than a decade."

Further doubts raised about safety of mobile phones

New doubts raised over mobile phone safety - Telegraph

Extract:

"Just five minutes of exposure to mobile phone emissions can trigger changes that occur during cancer development, according to new research.

Scientists found mobile signals can activate cell division – central to the growth of tumours - even at very low power levels.

Government guidance that mobile phone use is safe is based on the mainstream scientific assumption that electromagnetic radiation from devices such as mobiles could only cause health hazards as a result of heating.

The new research, highlighted in this week’s New Scientist, supports the position of some researchers who argue handsets can trigger potentially harmful changes to cells irrespective of temperature changes.

However other scientists said cell division is a natural process that occurs constantly in the body and does not usually signify health hazards.

Graham Philips, of the campaign group Powerwatch, said: "Current safety guidelines assume health effects from mobiles can only occur when significant heating of body tissue occurs.

"This study shows biological changes in response to low level mobile phone radiation - something that could potentially have implications for health.

"Further research is required, however guidance based purely on thermal effects is clearly out of date."

Prof Rony Seger, a cancer researcher at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, and colleagues exposed rat and human cells to electromagnetic radiation at a similar frequency to that emitted by mobiles. The power of the signal was around 1/10th of that from a mobile.

After just five minutes the researchers identified the production of extracellular signal-regulated kinases (ERK1/2) – natural chemicals that stimulate cell division and growth.
Cancers develop when the body is unable to prevent excessive growth and division of cells in the wrong place.

Prof Seger said: "The real significance of our findings is that cells are not inert to non-thermal mobile phone radiation."
