Artificial sweeteners have harmful side-effects and they do not help overweight people to lose weight.

Artificial sweeteners are very cheap to produce and so are very profitable to the manufacturers who add them to their food and drink products. They are 'dieting' products, marketed with the claim that by reducing the calorie content in a product they will assist overweight consumers to lose excess weight, but this claim is false. Not only is it false, but some of the sweeteners - most notably Aspartame and the new sweetener kid on the block, Neotame, a relative of Aspartame - interfere very profoundly with the intricate biochemistry of the body, risking serious and permanent health side-effects. These include neurological damage, increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, metabolic syndrome and more. If you value your health and the health of your family, as I am sure you do, I advise you to check the nutritional information on packs carefully, and to avoid artificial sweeteners. There are many internet sources of warning information about these unsafe substances. The very informative article I have been reading today is Dr Mercola's article.
And here is a safe, sure way to lose excess weight.

Improve your health by eating more like the hunter-gatherers and by avoiding added salt, and by avoiding pharmaceutical drugs

For millions of years our species ate what we might call for the sake of brevity a Stone Age diet. These 'hunter-gatherers' lived in the Paleolithic Age. We are separated in time from them by a 'mere' 10-12 thousand years. Our genes are our inheritance from those ancestors of ours, modified by natural selection over that geneological 'blink of a eye' since Neolithic, the New Stone Age, succeeded the old. This brought farming to the service of our kind. It was a mixed blessing: more food to feed more people, but a radical change of diet that caused some harm to the people who ate it.

The Paleolithic diet had mainly comprised meat, fish, nuts, non-starchy vegetables and fruit. The new foods of the Neolithic diet included cereals, i.e. grains. Grains make up such a large part of the modern day diet that it bears little resemblance to the hunter-gatherers' food of long ago and cannot logically be considered best suited to our species, the genes of which have not altered to suit it.

What 'food substance' have I not specifically mentioned? - SALT! - Salt is an even more recent newcomer to the modern diet. Humans started to eat added salt, it has been estimated, between 5,000 and 2,500 years ago, and in recent decades the food industry has, by adding copious amounts of salt to its processed foods, ensured that there wasn't a snowball's chance in Hell that our bodies could possibly adapt to so massive a change from the low sodium intake of our ancestors to the very high sodium intake of our societies today.

The outcome is that modern food is unsuitable for the health and nutrition of most people today and this partly explains the growing incidence of what we have come to think of as the new diseases of civilisation - diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, arthritis, stroke, dementia, etc. And of obesity.

The even more recent scourge that is afflicting our species is the rapidly increasing ingestion of pharmaceutical drugs recklessly prescribed by an over-powerful medical profession, under-informed about the harm their prescriptions do to their unfortunate patients.

You could improve your health, rapidly and immediately, by seriously cutting down on your intake of salt and salty food, by cutting down on sugar and cereals/grains, and by avoiding prescription drugs unless they really are necessary. - Why not start in this way to improve your health this very day? - You have nothing to lose but excess weight, some avoidable pain, and the unnecessary risk of degenerative illnesses. - I wish you Good Health!

BBC TV Programme: Who Made Me Fat?

I watched part of this a couple of evenings ago and the remainder on the iPlayer this evening. You could watch it on the iPlayer too - BBC TV Programme: Who Made Me Fat?

I can't say I favour the tabloidy style of either the programme or of the presenter, nor was I thrilled that yet again an opportunity was lost to tell the truth about what really causes obesity. There were transient references to salt here and there during the programme, but not the slightest effort to explain why salt gets mentioned at all in the anti-obesity advice/insults/lies that are currently being used against overweight/obese human beings in a doomed strategy to reduce obesity. And yet SALT is the ingredient that needs to be reduced/restricted/avoided in order to reduce obesity. (Just a reminder that they are human beings, by the way. The way fat people are usually shown on television is without heads. - Have you noticed? - Fat bodies walking along the street or fat bodies sitting on chairs? Heads chopped off to avoid identification or to avoid complaints or what? - To avoid thinking of fat people as fellow human beings with feelings and sensitivities like other people? The show's presenter came pretty close to presenting them as mere objects of derision, I'd say.)

Obesity is not caused by over-eating or by laziness or by a combination of the two.
Taking extra exercise does not reduce obesity.
Trying to 'shame' fat people into losing weight cannot succeed because they are being given the wrong information/advice about what causes obesity and how best to reduce it.

Since obesity seems to be regarded as inexorably on the increase despite the evermore strident and ubiquitous advice and the ever-increasing money poured into giving that advice, isn't it time that even the bird-brained among us realised that the advice being given is self-evidently wrong?

Excess weight is caused by sensitivity to salt and NOT by overeating. - Sensitivity to salt leads to fluid retention and this sometimes leads on to fat retention. - Fluid retention (i.e. excess weight) is easily reduced by cutting down on intake of salt and salty food. Eating plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables makes the fluid loss even speedier. These measures also reduce fat retention. In addition fat retention can be reduced by increasing intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

Exercise has many potential benefits but those benefits do not include weight loss. Exercise does not reduce excess weight, no matter how many health ministers and medics tell you that it does!

And WHEN is someone in Government going to inform people that the most extreme cases of obesity - morbid obesity - are the result of taking prescription drugs incautiously prescribed, often in high dose, by doctors inadequately informed about their side-effects? - If we could have a Government initiative to curb the massive over-prescribing by doctors that would reduce obesity very effectively indeed!

Here is the correct information:

Lose weight safely, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

If you don't want to gain a lot of weight over Christmas, go easy on the salt and salty food.

When people gain excess weight it is because they are sensitive to salt. For them, eating salt/sodium and salty food increases fluid retention in the body, and it is this fluid retention that is the cause of the weight gain. See Sodium in Foods.

Salt sensitivity leads to some fluid retention from alcohol too. So go easy on the alcoholic drinks too.

But the good news is that you don't need to diet, or worry about calories, or avoid fatty foods. The Christmas cake and the cream in your coffee won't make you fat. Just shun the salt.

New research based on flawed assumptions claims to explain why some people do not get flabby.

The research reported in this article in the Daily Telegraph Fat enzyme explains why some people don't get flabby is based on the usual false assumptions for which there is no supporting evidence, namely that obesity is caused by high calorie intake and that retention of excess fat is caused by excessive fat intake. These assumptions are not true so any conclusions based on them must be flawed and are likely to be irrelevant.

Obesity is caused by sodium retention/fluid retention/salt sensitivity, not by eating too much food. It can be easily reduced by cutting down on salt/sodium and salty food. The calorie explanation for obesity (eating too many calories and not taking much exercise – i.e. greed plus laziness) is clearly wrong because many – probably most – people can eat as much as they like and not become overweight, even if they take very little exercise. – They are what I call on my website ‘the lucky people’. – They are the slim people. – They are the people who have healthy veins and kidneys and are not sensitive to salt. They simply excrete in the urine any excess salt and its attendant water, so they do not gain weight by fluid retention.

The reason they do not put on excess weight when they overeat is that they simply excrete any excess fat/calories they eat. (Faeces tend to contain a lot of fat/calories, which is why animal dung is used as fuel in many countries.)

A few years ago BBC2 showed a series of programmes called “The Truth About Food” and I learnt about some Danish research which throws light on this. – See http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/slim/calcium.shtml where you will read: "a high calcium intake increases the excretion of fat in the faeces". – There is the necessary information! – In fact, the researchers found that twice as much fat was excreted on a high calcium intake as on a low calcium intake – and this was independent of calorie intake. – They also found that dairy calcium (they suggest yoghurt) is a particularly good source for this extra calcium.

Even the frequent claim that fat deposits in the bodies of fat people are there to be drawn upon 'in leaner times' is a pure guess and is not correct. - The fat deposits are caused by the altered body chemistry (depletion of calcium and other essential minerals in the body) resulting from excess blood volume/fluid retention/salt sensitivity.

So to reduce fat retention, if it is present, the most important thing is to alter the diet to reduce the fluid retention which is the initiating cause of excess weight and the primary reason for fat people being short of calcium and for fat people ‘dieting’. That means reducing sodium intake and ensuring plenty of fruit and vegetables in the diet (because their high potassium content helps to displace sodium from the body).

And specifically it also means having a higher intake of calcium, especially, if possible, from dairy yoghurt. – It is also necessary to ensure sufficient vitamin D intake, as this is needed to metabolise the calcium. There is increasing research evidence that vitamin D deficiency is associated with being overweight - and insufficiency of vitamin D is quite common, as is widely reported, e.g. here - http://ods.od.nih.gov/factsheets/vitamind.asp

In my personal opinion it is neither necessary nor desirable to adopt a low fat diet. Low fat intake can be harmful, especially for small children.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! A dog has been placed on an intensive diet after becoming so obese that he is unable to walk.

Obese dog on extreme diet so he can walk again
article in the Telegraph

Oh dear. - An extreme diet is not a good idea and is not necessary whether for a pet dog or for a human being. Diets tend to be harmful. In any case, all that is necessary to reduce excess weight is to reduce the fluid retention that is the reason for the excess weight. This fluid retention is caused by salt sensitivity combined with salt intake. Overweight dogs, cats, rabbits and people all need to cut down on salt and salty food in order to lose weight. - The owner of the dog must have been feeding him with salty food. - Pet dogs, cats and rabbits should not be fed on salty food. It is bad for them. It makes them fat, robs them of their health and energy and shortens their lives. - I wonder how many vets put notices up in their waiting rooms explaining that these pets should not be given leftovers from takeway meals and other salty food to eat? - Or maybe some of them believe that pet-owners already know this? - They don't. - They don't all know this...

'Slimming' - by which I mean eating less food than your body requires - can lead to many problems - and it will not make you slimmer...

Overweight/Obesity is caused by sodium retention/fluid retention/salt sensitivity, not by eating too much food. It can be easily reduced by cutting down on salt/sodium and salty food. - If you do not eat enough food you will become cold, tired and hungry, and over time your skin and your bones will become thinner and weaker, making you more vulnerable to fractures, injury and pain. You will suffer hair loss. You may develop type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. - But reducing calories does not reduce fluid retention, so you will not lose excess weight. - Here is some helpful information:

A naturally occurring protein, telomerase, that can create "immortal cells", could be the key to finding a real elixir of youth, scientists claim.

Scientists take a step closer to an elixir of youth
article in the Telegraph

I'm sceptical about this, myself. I believe that the longer the obesity 'experts' continue to blame 'overeating',
the disorder they invented, for the rise in obesity, and continue to urge overweight people to 'just eat less and exercise more', i.e. to cut down on calories and go hungry, life expectancy is far more likely to become lower, not higher.

Obesity is a very serious disease syndrome caused by the medical profession and its acolytes, by the dieting industry, and by pharmaceutical companies, all of which have supplied harmful misinformation to innocent members of the public and then blamed their victims for the harm caused...

The processed food industry has been equally culpable in doing harm by adding far too much salt to their products.

While women and men continue to be constantly misinformed by the foolish, unscientific 'experts', then obesity will continue to increase both in incidence and in severity. While you are waiting for the 'elixir of youth' to be perfected, the best way to extend your life-span and improve your health is to cut out salt as far as you can and also to avoid prescribed pharmaceutical junk as far as possible.

To lose excess weight it is necessary to eat less salt and salty food because this will reduce the body's fluid retention. This is the safe, sure, healthy way to lose and it works like magic.

DON'T DIET! - Dieting is unnecessary, harmful and IT DOES NOT WORK!

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Overweight parents could be paid to walk their children to school as part of a Government campaign to fight the obesity epidemic. - It won't work!

Fat parents could be paid to walk their children to school
article in the Telegraph

Extracts:

"Overweight parents could be paid to walk their children to school as part of a Government campaign to fight the obesity epidemic."

"Businesses which have signed up to the initiative include ITV, which is to run a series of programmes tracking viewers' attempts to live healthier lives, and Kellogg's, the cereal giant, which will support breakfast clubs in deprived areas."

There are many benefits to exercise, but reducing obesity is not one of them. There is no evidence that exercise reduces excess weight and there IS evidence that it doesn't! Extra exercise will make the parents and children tired without causing them to lose excess weight.

On Radio 4's "You and Yours" programme today they had discussion and phone-in and email contributions from listeners about the problem of obesity and about the Government's new initiative to tackle it with its creation of so-called 'healthy towns', promoting mainly an increase in exercise. As I've already stated, exercise will not reduce obesity. - One of the listeners who phoned in recited the advice we have all heard many thousands of times, namely to 'eat less and exercise more'. - She gave this advice along with the word that usually precedes it, i.e. she said, "Just eat less and exercise more!" - It's so simplistic and so very patronising - as if people are still unaware of this message and have never tried to follow this advice! - But they have! - over and over and over again! - The advice does not work! The advice usually causes weight GAIN not weight loss...)o:

The way to reduce excess weight/fluid retention is to eat plenty of food, but to avoid salt. - Ironically, Kellogg's, the firm that will be helping with breakfast clubs in deprived areas is one of the firms that adds a great deal of salt to most of its products - like cornflakes - so their 'help' is unlikely to do a lot of good...)o:

What a wasted opportunity! What a waste of money! - What needless, avoidable illness, pain and suffering the nation's obese children and adults will have to endure because the 'experts' - doctors, dieticians, the diet industry, Government ministers, the Department of Health, the World Health Organisation - have for so many years been giving out misinformation instead of helping people with the problems of overweight and obesity! What incalculable harm the food companies have done by their reckless addition of so much salt/sodium to processed convenience food and ready meals! - How they have warped the taste of their customers, giving them a taste for high salt food! - All of these people have great suffering and millions of early deaths on their consciences. - Those who know the truth - and there definitely are some who know the truth - are not correcting the lies that are harming innocent people because they do not want to admit that they have been misleading people all these years. They are frightened of being laughed at or getting into trouble or being sued... - They should be frightened of causing people to suffer pain and illness needlessly.

Obesity is caused by fluid retention in people who are sensitive to salt. It is not caused by too many calories, so it is not reduced by eating fewer calories or by using up more calories by increased exercise.

Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Fat people keep dieting, counting calories, cutting out fat, going hungry - yet obesity is increasing. - These measures do not work! - Read on...

Obesity is not caused by over-eating. - You know you see lots of slim people eating like there's no tomorrow and they don't put weight on so clearly eating too much is not the cause of the 'obesity epidemic'.

Obesity is caused by a combination of salt sensitivity and salt intake. - Only people who are sensitive to salt become fat/overweight/obese. This happens because for them, salt is very harmful: it holds excess water in their bodies. This is often called fluid retention or oedema. The veins swell and the skin gets thinner as it stretches to accommodate the swollen veins.

Reducing calories does not help with these problems. It is irrelevant to them. - Reducing salt is what helps. - By eating less salt and salty food you can easily and swiftly lose some of the excess water and thus lose weight - a lot of weight, since water is heavy. - Remember the mnemonic:

'A pint of pure water
Weighs a pound and a quarter.'

Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

You wouldn't do it to your car, would you? - Run it on empty? - Don't do it to your body...

Starving/fasting/dieting/'slimming' - they're all harmful to your body. - You can buy a new car if you damage it by not giving it enough fuel to keep it running smoothly; you can't get a new body to live in...

If you want to lose weight, do it the SAFE, effective way: avoid salt and salty food. - This is also the FASTEST way to lose excess weight. - Truly!

Obesity is caused by salt sensitivity leading to fluid retention and thus to excess weight. There are various causes of salt sensitivity, the most dangerous of which is the reckless prescribing of certain groups of drugs by doctors who have not familiarised themselves with the side-effects of some of the powerful drugs they prescribe - drugs like steroids, ant-depressants and anti-psychotics and certain pain-killers and other drugs.

Giving up dieting, reducing salt intake and eating plenty of good food including plenty of fruit and (unsalted) vegetables and dairy calcium in milk and/or low fat yoghurt (not cheese, because it's salty) will ensure safe loss of excess weight.

A 450-kilogram (990-pound), bedridden man who had appealed on Mexican television for help tackling his weight problem has died of heart failure.

Half-ton man dies in Mexico
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza's bedroom wall and put him in the back of a friend's pickup truck as he fought for his life. The 47-year-old was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital in northern Mexico.

Mr Garza followed in the footsteps of the world's fattest man, fellow Mexican Manuel Uribe of Monterrey, by taking his weight problem public. Mr Garza lived about an hour away from Mr Uribe in the town of Juarez.

Mr Garza said he had always struggled with his weight but fell into a cycle of depression and overeating nine months ago after his parents died of natural causes within two weeks of each other. He had been bedridden for four months.

Mr Garza's condition deteriorated over the weekend as he struggled to breathe and eat."

Poor fellow. - What a difficult life he must have had! - Obviously no-one ever told him that his problem was fluid retention (that is why it was so difficult for him to breathe) and that he needed to avoid salt and salty food. - Instead he will have constantly been told that he was 'overeating' and will have been bullied into dieting, when obviously extremely heavy people need more food than normal-sized people as they had heavier bodies to move and to service and bigger surface areas from which to lose heat.

Almost certainly his problem will have originated with some prescribed medication when he was young, and will have been compounded by not being told that he needed to avoid sodium. And dieting will have made things even worse. - Dieting is very harmful.

Fluid retention in people who have become sensitive to salt is the cause of obesity, and it is fluid retention that needs to be addressed, yet it is rarely if ever mentioned or considered by the highly-paid clueless, useless experts...)o:

Pretty obvious really, isn't it? - If you are suffering from fluid retention/water retention, you must be overweight. - Right? - It is salt/sodium that holds that excess liquid in your body. - Cut down on salt and the fluid retention will get less - and so, just like magic, you will lose some of your excess weight...(o: - without drugs, without hunger, without dieting, without endangering your health, without counting calories...

I watched Ann Widdecombe present a programme criticising the Diet Industry on ITV1 tonight

There's more information about it here: http://www.itv.com/PressCentre/AnnWiddecombeVersustheDietIndustry/Ep1/default.html

Ann Widdecombe is a good presenter for this sort of programme. Her main message was that "Diets Don't Work!" I think and hope that it will do some good. It highlighted the harmful role that so many of the glossy magazines do with their emphasis on dieting and on celebrity tips for losing weight and on photos of celebrities with extremely slim bodies, very unlike most people.

I was particularly impressed by the success of a woman psychologist who worked with a small group of teenage girls to raise their confidence and self-esteem so that they no longer felt that they had to lose weight in order to be liked. Her work was very worthwhile and the girls were clearly happier and no longer obsessed with diet nonsense.

Ms Widdecombe's visit to America and to Hollywood showed people whose obsession to be ultra-slim was so great that many resort to hugely expensive, ridiculously extensive weight reduction surgery, which she herself was offered and sensibly refused, not being a gullible fool.

The experts on the programme were wisely against the daft and often dangerous diets. Sadly, not one of them gave the best advice of all for losing excess weight safely and reliably, namely avoiding salt and salty food. - And Ann Widdecombe own advice for losing weight: "the best way to shift the pounds and stay slim is to eat less and move more" is not correct. - Very, very few people lose weight by doing that, and are often harmed by trying it.

To lose weight safely and rapidly, you need to give up dieting and low calorie/low fat junk altogether! - You can eat more food, more calories and still lose excess weight provided that overall your salt/sodium intake is lower. And faster still if you eat plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables, i.e. potassium-rich food.

Yes, although it contains no calories, salt is fattening! - because it causes fluid retention - but only if you are sensitive to salt... - Read more:

This afternoon this blog and my website had a visitor from the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust ...

I see that someone from the University College London Hospitals NHS Trust has been visiting this blog, obviously looking on the internet for reactions to the scandal of the death of Gary Foster in the drug trial that had been set up on UCLH's computer system. That person briefly looked at some other entries on my blog and then visited my website to look at (and, hopefully, READ) my Mensa article on Obesity and the Salt Connection.

Over the years many, many health professionals from all over the world have visited my website and my blog. I trust they will eventually have the courage to tell the truth about obesity and will stop harming their overweight patients by advising them to eat less and exercise more, instead of giving them the vital information that reducing sodium intake is the safe, effective, speedy way to reduce excess weight. Above all, I hope they will curb their profession's reckless over-prescribing of the many powerful drugs which cause obesity/morbid obesity by weakening the blood vessel walls and thereby causing massive fluid retention/sodium retention.

P.S. added 23rd September.
The visitor from University College London Hospitals NHS Trust has visited my blog again today. I do hope these visits will result in much less harm being done by health professionals to patients.

A person needs to take in about 15 calories per pound of body weight per day. - Obviously then, heavy, fat people need to eat more calories than slimmer people. - They need the extra calories because they have heavier bodies to carry around and to service and they need extra calories to maintain body temperature because the amount of heat a body loses is proportional to its surface area, and obviously a fat person's surface area is larger than a slim person's.

If people do not eat sufficient calories their health will suffer and they will feel tired, cold and hungry. - So fat people wanting to lose excess weight should not try to do so by eating too few calories. - Here is the safe, fast, effective way to lose excess weight without dieting, without hunger, without drugs, without counting calories, without strenuous exercise - just eat less salt. - Eating less salt/sodium reduces the fluid retention which is the cause of the overweight. It also reduces fat retention, which tends to follow from fluid retention.

Overweight and obesity are caused by fluid retention, not by eating too many calories, and occur only in people who are sensitive to salt/sodium. - To lose excess weight it is necessary to cut down on salt and salty food. - So instead of eating ready meals you need to cook a meal from fresh ingredients and use little or no salt to flavour it. - You could try using pepper or herbs instead of salt, or if you feel you cannot yet give up salt, then use one of the low sodium salt substitutes, e.g. LoSalt, Solo Low Sodium Sea Salt or AlsoSalt, instead of ordinary salt.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, angina, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!
