Vitamin D deficiency in cancer patients

More than three-quarters of cancer patients have insufficient levels of vitamin D (25-hydroxy-vitamin D) and the lowest levels are associated with more advanced cancer, according to a study presented on October 2, 2011, at the 53rd Annual Meeting of the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

Is there a link between antidepressants and breast and ovarian cancer?

Is there a link between antidepressants and breast and ovarian cancer? A new meta-analysis of 61 trials identified a connection in nearly 33 percent of the epidemiological and pre-clinical studies conducted between 1965 and 2010 found an association between cancer and antidepressants. And the link was stronger among women using selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs. Moreover, the study found researchers with industry ties were significantly less likely than researchers without those affiliations to conclude antidepressants increase the risk of breast or ovarian cancer. The authors of the meta-analysis, which was published in PLoS Medicines, suggest the findings raise public health and policy issues, “because there is increasing evidence that financial ties among industry, investigators, and academic institutions can affect the research process.”

Concern about growing incidence of dementia and its cost to UK economy

The number of people with dementia in the UK is higher than was previously thought, as BBC News reports here, and it is expected that before 2025 the number will exceed one million.

"Researchers from the University of Oxford compared the cost of caring for a person with dementia to the cost of dealing with cancer, heart disease or stroke - the three main causes of death in the UK.

As well as immediate health care expenses, they looked at the costs of social care, unpaid carers and productivity losses.

Every dementia patient, they found, costs the economy £27,647 each year - nearly five times more than a cancer patient, and eight times more than those with heart disease."

Obviously, with degenerative diseases, prevention is a far cheaper and better option than treatment/cure. Happily, the risk of developing any or all of these degenerative conditions - dementia, cancer, heart disease and stroke and many more - is significantly lowered by cutting down on salt and salty food, because obesity is a common causative factor in all of them, and obesity itself is reduced by eating less salt and salty food.

The need to rein in the continual increase in pharmaceutical drugs being prescribed by NHS doctors is ever more urgent, since scores of prescription drugs cause obesity by weakening the blood vessel walls and thus causing sensitivity to salt. The blood vessels become distended with sodium and water retention and the increased blood volume raises blood pressure as well as weight. Prescription drugs are the major cause of the most serious cases of obesity, namely morbid obesity. - Ironic, isn't it? - The NHS pays loadsamoney for prescription drugs, many of which do serious damage to the innocent patients who take them. (The 'guilty' drugs include steroids, anti-depressants, anti-psychotics, and many more. It's best only to take pharmaceutical drugs if you really need them.)

A reminder that cosmetics and skincare products sometimes contain potentially harmful chemicals

A timely reminder in this Telegraph report that cosmetics and skincare products used by women contain many ingredients and additives (a figure of 515 chemicals is suggested), some of which have been linked to cancer, hormone problems, skin conditions and allergies.

I know I sometimes look at the list of ingredients on these products and feel uneasy about some of them. - At least I now can buy body lotion and shampoo without SLS and parabens in the ingredients list.

100,000 cancer cases a year caused by obesity

CNN reports American researchers' claim that 100,000 cancer cases a year are caused by obesity. I can well believe that. - But what causes the obesity in the first place? - No, it's not caused by greed and inactivity; it's caused by fluid retention, and fluid retention in its turn often leads to fat retention. - Want to know more?

Omega 3 fish oil is being recommended to help prevent heart attacks

The Telegraph reports yet another benefit from taking omega 3 fish oil each day: less chance of having a heart attack. This fish oil is already believed to protect against strokes and some forms of cancer. Speaking personally, I take omega 3 fish oil capsules every day and I believe they do me good.

Another safe way to reduce your risk of heart disease/heart attack/stroke is to cut down on salt/sodium intake.

New report on cancer but it still avoids telling the whole truth about obesity and cancer.

Thousands of cancer cases caused by diet, alcohol and obesity, experts warn
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Cancer is not 'an act of God' in most cases and individuals can take action to dramatically reduce their chances of developing the disease, worldwide experts said.

After smoking, obesity, diet and physical activity are major causes of cancer and 39 per cent of the top 12 cancers in the UK could be prevented, the World Cancer Research Fund report said.

This equates to around 79,000 cases that could be prevented each year in the UK out of a total of around 289,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

If nothing is done to reduce cancer rates then 'this tide will engulf us', Prof Sir Michael Marmot, chairman of the expert panel said."

The experts are still not telling the truth about obesity and cancer. The main reason that both of these and many other related illnesses are on the increase is the misinformation about the causes of obesity and how to reduce/prevent it.

All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. (When doctors prescribe drugs that cause sodium retention and water retention they should warn the patient not to eat salt, or food containing salt, while taking the medication. When they do not give this warning, the inevitable consequence is considerable weight gain.)

Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' or 'dieting' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! Calcium Associated With Lower Risk Of Cancer In Women

Women with higher intake of calcium appear to have a lower risk of cancer overall, and both men and women with high calcium intakes have lower risks of colorectal cancer and other cancers of the digestive system, according to a report in the February 23 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.

Professor Sir Michael Marmot warns that the rise of obesity across the world will trigger huge rise in cancer.

Cancer deaths 'to double in next 40 years'
article by David Smith in the Observer

Extract:

Cancer cases are now rising at such a rate in Britain and the rest of the world that the disease poses a threat to humanity comparable to climate change, a leading scientist has warned.

The growing obesity epidemic in industrialised countries will be highlighted this week as a leading cause of cancer in a policy report led by Sir Michael Marmot, professor of epidemiology and public health at University College London.

About seven million people die from cancer worldwide each year, according to the most recent estimate by the World Cancer Research Fund, expected to rise to more than 10 million by 2020. The estimated number of new cases annually is set to increase from 10 million now to 16 million by 2020. Overall the toll is predicted to double in the next 40 years.

"It's enormous, it's catastrophic," said Marmot, who said the crisis demanded urgent action. "The numbers are just frightening on a global scale. After cardiovascular disease, it's the next highest cause of death in this country."

Just as global warming requires a quick and concerted international response, so Marmot believes that cancer now requires intervention on a similar scale. "With the same sense of urgency that at long last we're now starting to address the climate change agenda, let's address the cancer agenda because we think a large proportion of those cancer deaths are preventable or could be delayed. It's urgent to be taking action now," he said.

Marmot chaired a panel of 23 experts from around the world to make recommendations for the World Cancer Research Fund's Policy and Action for Cancer Prevention report. A report by the same panel in 2007, the biggest undertaken into lifestyle and cancer, found that a third of cancers are caused by diet and lack of exercise. The experts urged people to stay slim and abstain from too much fast food, red meat and preserved meat, such as ham and bacon, as well as alcohol.

The new report, to be published on Thursday, will not dwell on the issue of smoking because the science is now so well established. Instead its focus is on weight gain and obesity, which leads to around 13,000 cancer cases in the UK every year. Marmot said: "When we look at what's happened to obesity levels in this country, it's growing at an alarming rate. Anybody looking at the evidence would say there must be social and economic causes of that. It can't be that 20 million people individually said, 'I'll think I'll get fat.'""

It's scarcely credible that this host of highly-paid 'experts' still haven't twigged or still will not acknowledge that obesity (along with its many attendant illnesses) has in the main been caused both directly and indirectly by misinformation churned out by doctors, nutritionists, government agencies, the dieting industry, et al, and by the reckless overprescribing of pharmaceutical drugs by ill-informed, arrogant, prejudiced doctors.

Obesity will continue inexorably to increase unless and until people are told the truth, namely that it is a problem of fluid retention, not a problem of overeating, and that it can be reduced easily on an individual basis by giving up dieting and instead concentrating on avoiding salt and salty food. - It is vital for the general public however, as opposed to the individual patient, that doctors' monumentally high prescribing of drugs be curbed by law, in order to prevent the nation's health from going to Hell in an accelerating handcart!

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

A supplement made from grape seeds can destroy leukaemia cells, say scientists.

Grape seed extract makes leukaemia cells 'commit suicide'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"In laboratory experiments, commercially-available grapeseed extract forced the cancer cells to "commit suicide", found the researchers.

Within 24 hours, 76 per cent of leukaemia cells exposed to the extract died through a process of natural self-destruction called apoptosis. Healthy cells remained unharmed.

The researchers believe the discovery could open the door to promising new treatments for the disease which affects more than 24,000 adults and children a year.

But they warn it is too early to justify recommending that people eat grapes or take grapeseed extract in an attempt to stave off cancer.

Grape seeds contain a number of antioxidant plant chemicals including resveratrol, which is known to have anti-cancer properties.

Previous research has shown that grapeseed extract has an effect on skin, breast, bowel, lung, stomach and prostate cancer cells in the laboratory."

As a result of Georgina Downs' campaign, people in the countryside at risk from crop sprays must be given better protection, the High Court has ruled.

Crop sprays a risk to health, rules High Court
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"the Government has been ordered to "rethink" its policies on pesticides so that human health is given more priority.

The ruling by Mr Justice Collins is a landmark victory for Georgina Downs who launched a one-woman campaign after her own health was damaged by crop spraying.

She argued that the Government had ignored evidence that agricultural chemicals damaged the health of people who - like herself - lived close to crop fields.

In his ruling the judge said Miss Downs had produced "strong" evidence to back her case and granted her application for a judicial review.

He said the Government had failed to meet its obligations under EU law to protect rural residents and communities from the possible harmful exposure to pesticides.

Miss Downs, whose home near Chichester, West Sussex, borders crop fields, launched her independent UK Pesticides Campaign in 2001.

Last month her campaigning against the unrestricted use of pesticides earned her a Woman of the Year award.

She had claimed that the Government based its decisions on an assumption that people suffered only occasional and short-term exposure.

Miss Downs said the Government had failed to address countryside residents such as herself, "who are repeatedly exposed to mixtures of pesticides and other chemicals throughout every year, and in many cases, like mine, for decades".

She told the court that she had collected evidence that agricultural chemicals caused a variety of health problems including cancer, Parkinson's disease, ME and asthma.

And she claimed that under current rules local people were not even entitled to a warning about what was being sprayed near their homes and gardens."

Vitamin C May Slow Cancer Down

And, Doctors Say, Can Reverse It as Well
The BBC recently reported that "Vitamin C 'slows cancer growth.' An injection of a high dose of vitamin C may be able to hold back the advance of cancers, US scientists claim. The vitamin may start a destructive chain reaction within the cancer cell." The injection "halved the size" of tumors, and was reported in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The study authors themselves said that daily, high-dose vitamin C treatment "significantly decreased growth rates" of ovarian, pancreatic, and malignant brain tumors in mice. Such high, cancer-stopping levels of vitamin C can be "readily achieved in humans given ascorbate intravenously."

Vitamin D Stops Cancer; Cuts Risk In Half

American Cancer Society Drags its Feet
A new study of 3,299 persons has shown that those with higher levels of vitamin D cut their risk of dying from cancer in half. Another recent study shows that ample intake of vitamin D, about 2,000 IU per day, can cut breast cancer incidence by half. Still more research found that inadequate Vitamin D is "associated with high incidence rates of colorectal cancer" and specifically urges that "prompt public health action is needed to increase intake of Vitamin D-3 to 1000 IU/day." Vitamin D's anticancer properties are so evident, and so important, that the Canadian Cancer Society now recommends supplementation with 1,000 IU of Vitamin D per day for all adults in winter, and year-round for persons at risk. The American Cancer Society, however, is dragging its feet, still maintaining that "More research is needed to define the best levels of intake and blood levels of vitamin D for cancer risk reduction." What is taking them so long?

A bit more about Inegy, the cholesterol lowering drug that 'increases risk of cancer by 50 per cent'

Cholesterol lowering drug 'increases risk of cancer by 50 per cent'
Article in the Telegraph

Extract 1:

"Researchers found there were 105 cases of cancer in people taking Inegy compared to 70 in those on a dummy drug over a four year period.

The study also suggested that Inegy, which combines a statin called simvastatin and another drug called ezetimibe, has little effect in reducing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

Prof Heinz Drexel, of the University of Innsbruck in Austria and spokesman for the European Society of Cardiology, said: "I am not sure that the efficacy is proven and I am not sure that the safety is proven. I wouldn't take the drug myself.

"In patients with an urgent need to reduce cholesterol I would give them the drug but that is they are the exception and that is not consistent with how it is being used currently. "It is being more widely used than I think it should be. We can use something else in patients whose cholesterol is not sky high."

In the last two years 300,000 prescriptions for Inegy were dispensed in England and Wales and between four and five million people are thought to be taking standard statins."

Note well that Prof Heinz Drexel would not take Inegy himself! It's rare for a doctor to speak as forthrightly as that.

Extract 2:

"There was also a higher proportion of deaths from cancer with 39 deaths in the Inegy group and 23 deaths in those on the placebo.

The cancers in both groups were across all major areas of the body including the skin and lungs, according to the findings, which were also published in the New England Journal of Medicine."

The best and the completely safe way to reduce the risk of most cancers is to avoid prescription drugs unless they are absolutely necessary and rigorously avoid salt and salty food and make sure you eat plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

A cholesterol-lowering drug, Inegy, may increase the risk of cancer.

Cholesterol-lowering drug 'may increase cancer risk'
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"The drug called Inegy is taken by thousands of people in the UK and the drug regulator is studying research which has linked to indicated a link to increased cancers and deaths from cancer.

It is a combination of the statin simvastatin and ezetimibe for use in patients whose cholesterol cannot be controlled by one drug alone.

Just under 300,000 prescriptions were dispensed for Inergy in the last two years in England and Wales, official figures show.

The American Food and Drug Administration issued a statement saying preliminary findings from a study has shown found the drug did not reduce cardiovascular problems as expected and a larger percentage of patients on the drug were diagnosed with and died from all types of cancer than those on the placebo during the five year study."

So! - It doesn't actually work and it also causes extra deaths from cancer? - Best not to take it then...(o: - or prescribe it!

You may wonder why doctors prescribe these rubbish drugs that don't work and are so harmful. - There was a good clue on the radio today. - There was criticism of pharmaceutical companies that provide expensive junkets/trips abroad for doctors and other health professionals to go to 'conferences' and other euphemisms for free holidays in exchange for prescribing more of the drug companies' pharmaceutical junk to their innocent patients...)o:

'Twas ever thus. There have been many eminent critics of the medical profession's venality and cupidity, e.g. Dr Joe Collier, clinical pharmacologist, was writing about this influencing/bribery of doctors by drug companies 20 years ago in The Health Conspiracy - How Doctors, the Drug Industry and the Government Undermine Our Health and other publications. See also Sleaze

Actually a great many, possibly even most, prescription drugs increase the risk of developing cancer - steroids, HRT, anti-psychotics, tricyclic antidepressants, etc.

Children should only use mobile phones in emergencies and adults should try and keep them away from their heads, a leading cancer expert has said

US cancer expert Ronald Herberman warns against children using mobile phones
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Ronald Herberman, the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute director, issued the warning as he urged mobile users to protect themselves from cancer risks.

Dr Herberman made the pronouncement in an internal memo to thousands of staff saying it was based on early unpublished data on the possible risk of brain cancer.

"We shouldn't wait for a definitive study to come out, but err on the side of being safe rather than sorry later," Dr Herberman said.

"I am convinced that there are sufficient data to warrant issuing an advisory to share some precautionary advice on cell phone use."

His warning came even though no major academic study has yet found any evidence that exposure to mobile phone signals affects brain function and the US Food and Drug Administration has said that, if there is a risk, it is probably very small.

Dr Heberman, however, said there was a "growing body of literature" which linked long-term mobile phone use with adverse health effects, including cancer."
