The Radio 4 Appeal today was presented by Henry Blofeld on behalf of the Macular Disease Society.

The Radio 4 Appeal today was presented by Henry Blofeld on behalf of the Macular Disease Society. I thought it was a pity that the opportunity was not taken to mention that there is evidence of a dietary measure that can help with this condition. See this BBC2 webpage. Eating spinach helps to prevent "age-related macular degeneration", a major cause of poor eyesight and sometimes blindness. It can even repair some damage to the macula that has already occurred! - The nutrient involved is lutein. This nutrient is also contained in kiwifruits, leeks, peas, eggs, broccoli, etc. You can find them easily by using a search engine. Maybe Henry Blofeld would like to try this dietary measure for himself, since he is himself experiencing macular degeneration.

Eat your greens!

Green vegetables have long been considered to be good for our health, and many people will remember as children being exhorted to: 'Eat your greens!' - The latest dietary suggestion is that eating about 4 ounces of green, leafy vegetables (cabbage, broccoli, spinach, cauliflower, etc) a day may significantly reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. See BBC News report.

Raw broccoli is better than cooked broccoli for anti-cancer potential a new study suggests

Consuming cooked or processed broccoli may result in less of the potential anti-cancer compounds being available for absorption, suggests a new study from TNO Quality of Life. Consumption of the cooked vegetable led to lower levels of a compound called sulforaphane being measured in the blood and urine, compared to consuming raw broccoli, according to findings published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The bioavailability of sulforaphane was calculated to be 37 per cent from the raw vegetable, and only 3.4 per cent from cooked broccoli, reported Martijn Vermeulen and co-workers from TNO Quality of Life.

Broccoli may undo diabetes damage

Eating broccoli could reverse the damage caused by diabetes to heart blood vessels, research suggests. A University of Warwick team believe the key is a compound called sulforaphane found in the vegetable. It encourages production of enzymes which protect the blood vessels, and a reduction in high levels of molecules which cause significant cell damage.

Broccoli and other green leafy vegetables may protect women from diabetes

An increased intake of green leafy vegetables may reduce the risk of women developing type-2 diabetes, suggests a new study from New Orleans. For every additional serving of green leafy vegetables, the risk of developing diabetes may be reduced by almost 10 per cent, according to results of an epidemiological study published in the journal Diabetes Care. The study, led by Lydia Bazzano from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine in New Orleans, adds to a growing body of science supporting the intake of vegetables for diabetes risk reduction.

Cauliflower and broccoli reduces risk of developing cancer

Cauliflower and broccoli 'cut risk of cancer' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Eating cauliflower and broccoli twice a week can almost halve a man's chances of developing the most life-threatening form of prostate cancer, a new study claims.

The research shows that eating the vegetables can reduce dramatically the risk of an aggressive tumour.

Cauliflower can cut the chances of developing the cancer by 52 per cent, while broccoli can reduce the risk by as much as 45 per cent, the researchers said.

Although the two vegetables have long been thought to protect against the disease, this is the first study to show they are particularly good at preventing dangerous forms of prostate cancer."

I watched The Truth About Food last evening on BBC2. It included food suggestions re. macular degeneration.

This is the website link for the programme I saw: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sn/humanbody/truthaboutfood/young/

In brief, the clearest, most definite things I learned from the programme:

Most detox diets are not worth bothering with. The expert explained that nutrition is far more complicated than is realised by the people who keep recommending detox diets.

Eating tomatoes helps to protect your skin from UV damage by the sun. The nutrient involved in this protection is lycopene.
