BBC News reports that Prostate Cancer screening does not save lives

BBC News reports that prostate cancer screening does not save lives and indeed does more harm than good. This is the conclusion of a 20 year study published in the British Medical Journal.

I regard this as excellent news since hopefully it will save many men from going for screening and suffering the needless harm and worry that this screening entails.

I am similarly against mammography being used to screen women for evidence of breast cancer. I have always considered routine mammography screening as an expensive political pretence of concern for women's health that actually does far more harm than good to the women screened.

Screening is not prevention, though it seems to be promoted as prevention. Prevention should be the primary aim where cancer is concerned, though the Cancer Research Industry accords little value to, and puts little effort into, cancer prevention.

Oily fish may provide some protection against prostate cancer.

Oily fish containing Omega-3 fatty acids may provide protection from prostate cancer. See Chester Evening Leader

This appears to be genuine scientific research, i.e. not funded by sponsors with commercial interests in oily fish or Omega-3 fatty acids.

Reducing salt intake also reduces the risk of developing certain cancers.

Pros and cons of prostate screening

Debate about Prostate Screening
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Doctors are divided over the benefits of offering widespread screening for prostate cancer, with many believing it could leave thousands of men at no real danger of dying from the disease with erection problems and incontinence."

It's good that the downside of screening is being considered. Too often, screening is advocated as though it is always a good thing.

I suppose the comparable screening for women is mammograms for breast cancer detection. As well as sometimes detecting cancer that needs to be treated, it sometimes results in false positives, leading to the stress and anxiety, and sometimes to surgery for cancers that were not really sufficiently large/serious to warrant surgery.

Reducing salt intake reduces the likelihood of developing breast cancer and some other cancers.

Overweight people are significantly more likely to develop a range of common cancers, a major study has found.

Cancer links to obesity revealed in new study
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"The findings show the extent to which an individual's risk of contracting seven types of cancer increases with every pound of weight put on. People who lose weight can reduce their chance of developing the disease.

In the study, which is published in the British Journal of Cancer this week, researchers analysed data from around the world on obesity, weight gain and weight loss in relation to cancers of the breast, pancreas, kidney, colon, prostate, oesophagus and endometrium, which is the lining of the womb.

Ed Yong, health information manager at Cancer Research UK said: "Most people associate high body weight with conditions like diabetes and heart disease, and a lot of people are not aware of the links between body weight and cancer.

"This is a very important and growing issue. Maintaining a healthy body weight is one of the most important things you can do to prevent cancer after not smoking.

"If you look at these cancers, they include two of the most common, breast and colon, and some which have very low survival rates, pancreatic and oesophagus. So body weight has a substantial impact on cancers that are common and those that are difficult to treat."

In the study, carried out at the Washington University School of Medicine in the US, the cancer which emerged as having the clearest link to weight gain was breast cancer in postmenopausal women. The risk of catching the disease increased by five per cent with every five kilograms of weight gained.

Weight gain in adulthood accounts for almost a quarter of cases of the disease in older women, the study found. Around 45,000 cases of breast cancer are diagnosed each year in the UK, eighty per cent of which are in women over the age of 50. Conversely, women who lost weight were at a significantly lower risk of the disease. Researchers believe this may be because weight loss lowers oestrogen levels."

Obesity and its connection with cancer risk has been written about in this blog for a couple of years and for much longer than that on my website. - The way to reduce the problem is to tell the truth about obesity and the salt connection. - When is the medical profession going to own up to the harm it has done by attributing obesity to overeating and not to the true cause, which is fluid retention, itself frequently caused by prescribed medications?

A cancer patient returned home just two days after having his prostate removed thanks to pioneering surgery performed by a robot.

'Matilda the robot' performs prostate operation

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"The 'Robo Doc’ - or Matilda as the machine in more personally called by surgeons - carried out the procedure on 55-year-old surveyor David Roughly with greater precision than a human hand.

Mr Roughly was up and about within 24 hours after undergoing the operation at Manchester’s Christie Hospital thanks to the less invasive nature of the surgery.

Lower doses of anaesthetic are needed for the keyhole surgery under the robot’s steady hand, patients lose less blood and the chances of infection are lower."

"Surgeon Vijay Ramani said: “The robot is very sophisticated. With practice you can achieve the same or better levels or control as if you held the instrument yourself, rather than traditional keyhole surgery which is more like using chopsticks.

“This is the future of surgery because it radically reduces most of the risks associated with operations, but the technology enables us to see inside the body as well as performing an open operation and manipulate the instruments with high precision.

“David’s operation went well and his recovery was remarkable. As well as bringing benefits for patients, the machines will be cost effective because patients recover so much quicker - they can be discharged after one or two days and return to work after just a few weeks.”"

Cauliflower and broccoli reduces risk of developing cancer

Cauliflower and broccoli 'cut risk of cancer' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Eating cauliflower and broccoli twice a week can almost halve a man's chances of developing the most life-threatening form of prostate cancer, a new study claims.

The research shows that eating the vegetables can reduce dramatically the risk of an aggressive tumour.

Cauliflower can cut the chances of developing the cancer by 52 per cent, while broccoli can reduce the risk by as much as 45 per cent, the researchers said.

Although the two vegetables have long been thought to protect against the disease, this is the first study to show they are particularly good at preventing dangerous forms of prostate cancer."
