Colonic irrigation works, clinic insists as watchdog bans advert - Guardian
Extract:
"An advert which claimed that colonic irrigation was capable of relieving the symptoms of 19 conditions including ME, psoriasis, bad breath and colitis has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.
The claims were made in adverts in the Metro newspaper and regional press in the north-east by a Newcastle-based company, the Body Detox Clinic. The claims were dismissed by the ASA because the company could not provide "robust clinical evidence to support them".
The ASA's ruling means the company cannot repeat the claims in paid-for advertising. However, the company's website, which is not regulated by the ASA, was repeating the claims yesterday."
In the complete article, it appears that there was only one complaint about this to the Advertising Standards Authority. - Contrast the way this matter has been dealt with, with the way my complaint to the ASA was dealt with. - I emailed the ASA about adverts and claims made that reducing calorie intake/controlling calorie intake reduces weight in overweight people. - As with the Body Detox Clinic, these claims have no "robust clinical evidence to support them". - On the contrary, there is very substantial evidence that these claims are completely false. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003 BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat. - But the ASA is not taking any action about my complaint. - And yet it is far more serious; the misinformation being given/fraudulent claims being made by many advertisers, including government agencies - and I suppose some of the advertising is paid for - is harming millions of people, who try, unsuccessfully and damaging themselves in the process, to lose excess weight by calorie reduction, when all they need to do is to reduce salt intake and they will lose weight easily.
Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!
