The government has abandoned plans to impose a pre-9pm ban on junk food TV advertising

Plans for junk food ad ban dropped

Extract from the Guardian:

"In a major victory for the advertising industry and commercial broadcasters, it is thought that the Department of Health has lost the battle to introduce a pre-watershed ban following a series of discussions with other government departments, notably the culture minister, James Purnell, MediaGuardian.co.uk can reveal.

Many industry observers had expected that the new obesity strategy, to be launched tomorrow by the health secretary, Alan Johnson, and the public health minister, Dawn Primarolo, would drastically extend the TV restrictions Ofcom brought in last year.

Ofcom has stated that such a ban would have a "disproportionate" effect on the industry, costing as much as £211m in TV ad revenue.

But campaign groups are now convinced that they have lost the battle on the pre-watershed ban.

"It sounds as if the advertising and food industries owe the Department for Culture, Media and Sport a large pat on the back," said Richard Watts, the coordinator of the Children's Food Campaign.

"Our understanding is that the Department of Health supported some very tough restrictions on junk food advertising and marketing, but lost the Whitehall battle to keep them in the obesity strategy.""

Colonic irrigation works, Body Detox Clinic insists...

Colonic irrigation works, clinic insists as watchdog bans advert - Guardian

Extract:

"An advert which claimed that colonic irrigation was capable of relieving the symptoms of 19 conditions including ME, psoriasis, bad breath and colitis has been banned by the Advertising Standards Authority.

The claims were made in adverts in the Metro newspaper and regional press in the north-east by a Newcastle-based company, the Body Detox Clinic. The claims were dismissed by the ASA because the company could not provide "robust clinical evidence to support them".

The ASA's ruling means the company cannot repeat the claims in paid-for advertising. However, the company's website, which is not regulated by the ASA, was repeating the claims yesterday."

In the complete article, it appears that there was only one complaint about this to the Advertising Standards Authority. - Contrast the way this matter has been dealt with, with the way my complaint to the ASA was dealt with. - I emailed the ASA about adverts and claims made that reducing calorie intake/controlling calorie intake reduces weight in overweight people. - As with the Body Detox Clinic, these claims have no "robust clinical evidence to support them". - On the contrary, there is very substantial evidence that these claims are completely false. - See the article in the British Medical Journal of November 2003
BMJ article for actual research on what happens when this advice is followed! - Over 800 obese adults were put on energy deficit diets, given diet sheets and plenty of instruction and help from trained staff, and apparently, visited fortnightly for a year, at the end of which they had GAINED weight! This mirrors the real experience of obese people, viz. - dieting makes you fat. - But the ASA is not taking any action about my complaint. - And yet it is far more serious; the misinformation being given/fraudulent claims being made by many advertisers, including government agencies - and I suppose some of the advertising is paid for - is harming millions of people, who try, unsuccessfully and damaging themselves in the process, to lose excess weight by calorie reduction, when all they need to do is to reduce salt intake and they will lose weight easily.

Junk food ad restrictions 'absurd'

Junk food ad restrictions 'absurd'

Extracts from this report:

"Recent restrictions proposed for the advertising of junk food have been condemned by Hamish Pringle, the director general of the Institute of Practitioners of Advertising (IPA).

The restrictions were proposed by the regulator Ofcom and cover food judged to be inordinately high in salt and fat content.

If the proposals are taken up, such foods will not be allowed to be advertised during shows directed at children under 16 years old."

Hamish Pringle, the director general of the Institute of Practitioners of Advertising (IPA), speaking on BBC Radio Five Live's Wake Up to Money, said, "The idea that teenagers need protecting from junk food advertisements is "rather absurd"."

He is wrong! - Children are one of the groups vulnerable to salt, and as far as possible they should be protected from unnecessary salt intake. - See my webpage http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/vulnerable_groups.html
