Winslet wins payout over 'diet doctor' story
Extract:
"Kate Winslet, the actress, today accepted a "substantial donation" to an eating disorder charity in settlement of her libel action over a magazine's claims she visited a diet doctor.
The 31-year-old star of films including Titanic and Sense and Sensibility was not at London's High Court.
However her solicitor, Rachel Atkins, told Mr Justice Eady that the story in Grazia magazine last month caused the actress "substantial personal hurt, distress, anger and embarrassment" as well as damaging her personal and professional reputation.
Miss Atkins said the article wrongly stated - albeit in good faith - that the actress had approached a doctor for help with her weight, despite the fact that she has previously said she would not bow to Hollywood pressure to be skinny. "
This is excellent news and Kate Winslet is to be commended for taking this action. The constant encouragement to 'diet' and to try 'slimming' is very damaging to the health of many vulnerable people.
Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline.
Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.
Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it!
