Millions wasted by NHS on expensive, useless MS drugs

See report in the Telegraph, where you will read that experts "called for a Government-backed scheme to provide the drugs to be scrapped and called for a public inquiry. In total at least £250 million could have been saved if a review had been carried out on the “costly failure” after its first two years, they warn."And also "The four drugs involved Avonex, Betaferon, Copaxone and Rebif, cost around £8,000 per patient per year."

These expensive drugs have been provided on the NHS for six years now, during which time they have performed less well than a placebo. - Why then, has it taken till now for anyone to seek to do anything about this? MS sufferers have enough to contend with, without being given false hope and useless drugs. And why can't the many legal eagles on the State payroll devise watertight contracts to ensure that the drug companies do not screw the NHS for costly drugs that prove to be worthless?

It is time we had some people in Government and in the Dept of Health with enough sense to resist the blandishments and lies of the pharmaceutical companies, and enough courage and integrity to listen to the people who are ill, rather than to the drug company executives who cosy up to the people in power, seeking to make money out of their expensive products, regardless of how useless or harmful those products are. During those six years of uselessness, why was no-one taking heed of their uselessness to patients? - No-one listening to the patients?

Stem Cells have reversed symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis: small study finds

The Telegraph reports that stem cells from patients' own body fat have reversed the symptoms of multiple sclerosis leaving some patients free from seizures and able to walk better.

Stem cell injections appear to stimulate regrowth of damaged tissue, with improvement continuing for up to a year after treatment.

Vitamin D reduces risk of multiple sclerosis

Taking vitamin D supplements during pregnancy and in the early years of life could reduce the risk of developing multiple sclerosis, research suggested yesterday. Scientists have discovered that the chances of developing MS are influenced by vitamin D levels coupled with a common gene variant. Children with the genetic mutation may be more at risk of developing the disease if they lack vitamin D while growing in the womb or during their early years of life.

Two international teams of scientists have found that possessing defective variants of one of two genes increased the risk of MS by 20 to 30 per cent.

Dr Lee Dunster, head of research at the MS Society, said: "One of the great unknowns about MS is what causes it, and this looks like a welcome breakthrough in getting to grips with the genetics behind the disease.

"People with MS often worry whether it will affect their children, so a better understanding of the role of certain genes is good news."

MS can cause muscle weakness, vision loss and coordination problems, and is the most common disabling neurological disorder in young adults. It affects around 85,000 people in the UK.

The illness occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks myelin - the protective sheath that surrounds nerve fibres."

"Multiple sclerosis sufferers are spending their life savings and running up large debts to pay for a treatment derived from goats' blood that is being sold in Britain without any scientific proof that it works.

The MS Society is concerned about promotion and sales of the treatment, called Aimspro, to people with the progressive disease who have few other options. It has called on the firm selling it, Daval International, to put the drug through trials.

There are also concerns about a registered charity called Proventus, which was set up to lobby for greater access to Aimspro, but now says that it has broadened its field to a range of largely alternative products for MS.

Proventus, many of whose trustees and officers have small shareholdings in Daval, organises road shows to talk about Aimspro to people with MS. A recent event in Wimborne, Dorset, was described by one man who attended as reminiscent of a religious rally. "It was a very evangelical meeting. Others who were there said it was like a Billy Graham sermon," said Tim Worner, who runs a support group in Bournemouth for people with MS and invited Proventus to speak to it.

"A guy at the back of the hall stood up and said he took Aimspro once a week and was better. He said he had been in a wheelchair and used two sticks. He walked to the front and gave us a short talk on how he spent £180 to inject it once a week and how he wished he could afford to spend twice that. That's a good-sized mortgage payment."
