Even with very skilled surgeons, there can be devastating consequences. Jan Stanek has had to pay compensation to a face lift/liposculpture patient.

TV plastic surgeon Jan Stanek compensation pay out
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"The internationally acclaimed cosmetic surgeon Jan Stanek has agreed to a six-figure compensation payout to a face lift patient who claims she suffered a devastating stroke whilst under his knife.

Diane Newbould, 53, who claims she was originally paralysed down one side, said she will never recover from the face lift and liposculpture operation carried out by Mr Stanek at a private hospital in central London in January 2002.

She sued Mr Stanek and the anaesthetist during the operation, claiming their negligence wrecked her life, leaving her a severely disabled shadow of her former self.

Yesterday, her counsel, Simeon Maskrey QC, told London's High Court that Mr Stanek and the anaesthetist had agreed to a substantial settlement of Mrs Newbould's case.

The settlement was agreed without any admission of liability by Mr Stanek, or the anaesthetist.

Mr Stanek is considered one of the leading surgeons in his field and is well known around the world after featuring in the Channel 5 series, "Plastic Fantastic," and most recently in the popular Channel 4 series, "10 years Younger"."

With regard to liposuction or liposculpture, the safest way to lose weight is to avoid eating salt and salty food. Surgery always carries risk and in my opinion should be avoided if at all possible.

Let the buyer beware when it's cosmetic surgery! - Boob jobs, liposuction, botox treatments - unethical practices by surgeons out for a fast buck...

Beauty surgery's ugly secret

Extract from The Observer:

"Earlier this year Rachel received damages of more than £20,000 in an out-of-court settlement from the clinic. That was to cover her pain, trauma and suffering, both physical and psychological, and the cost of corrective surgery. She plans to have that soon, but will be much more rigorous in checking the experience of her surgeon.

Cosmetic surgery is a booming market which offers everything from invasive procedures requiring a general anaesthetic, such as breast enhancement, tummy tucks and liposuction, through to non-surgical treatments, which include Botox injections, laser removal of hair and 'fillers' to tackle signs of ageing.
Around 700,000 cosmetic surgery procedures were performed in the UK in 2005 at a cost of £360 million, more than three times the 202,000 treatments undertaken in 2001. The vast majority of procedures in 2005, around 595,000, involved non-surgical treatments such as chemical peels. They cost on average £200, compared with about £3,700 for those in which a surgeon wields a scalpel.
Research by Which?, formerly the Consumers' Association, shows that almost five million adult Britons would consider having cosmetic surgery to improve their appearance. Four per cent, or 1.4 million people, want their partner to consider some form of cosmetic enhancement.
The influence of celebrities who have had surgery, such as Anne Robinson, Sharon Osbourne and Debbie Harry, has probably played a part.
But failed operations like Rachel's are only one reason why the industry arouses concern. Which? has produced a dossier of evidence which exposes an array of 'hard sell' tactics being used by clinics. Which? claims that such practices are being used worryingly often in an attempt to persuade people to sign up for treatment, even though such tactics breach the letter and spirit of codes of conduct of the various regulatory bodies which are meant to govern the industry's behaviour and ensure high standards. The Good Medical Practice in Cosmetic Surgery code of conduct, drawn up by the industry's Independent Healthcare Advisory Services (IHAS), appears to have been breached time and time again in an increasingly competitive market.
In a letter to IHAS, Which? recounts how its staff who attended the recent Body Beautiful show, a huge trade fair at the Business Design Centre in north London attended by many members of the public, found 20 examples of rule-breaking and bad practice by cosmetic surgery clinics in the promotional materials they gave out to visitors. Which? found some of the country's best known operators such as Forma, Linia, Harley Medical Group and Make Yourself Amazing among the offenders. The organisation's catalogue of complaints includes claims, backed up by evidence sent to the IHAS, that clinics at the show were:
· offering patients money off the usual price of a procedure if they booked by a certain date, even though industry codes of conduct specifically ban such deals. Four clinics, including Linia and the Harley Medical Group, have been accused.
· advertising Botox, even though doing so is illegal because it is a controlled toxin and against the regulations of the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency, which approves medicines for use in the UK. Which? accuses both Harley Medical Group and the Forma group of doing this."
It is a long, detailed article - worth reading in full if you are considering having this kind of treatment.

Fat, aging men are misguidedly turning to plastic surgery - liposuction and other procedures

Ageing men turn to plastic surgery - Telegraph

Extract:

"The number of middle-aged men undergoing cosmetic surgery has more than doubled in just five years as they struggle to come to terms with "menopaunch", according to a report.

Men aged over 50 are spending thousands of pounds and taking weeks off work to have liposuction and other procedures such as eye bag removal (blepharoplasty) in attempts to remove stubborn fat, says a cosmetic surgery company.

Figures produced by The Harley Medical Group show that liposuction - including work done on the abdomen, flanks, chest and chin areas - accounts for 24 per cent of surgical procedures for 50-something men.

This was followed by blepharoplasty (21 per cent), face lifts (14), rhinoplasty or nose operations, (11), tummy tucks (8), neck lifts (7), brow lifts (5), chin implants (3) and otoplasty or ear surgery (2)."

What a pity these men - and other overweight people too - do not know that the causes of fat retention are mainly sodium and water retention and shortage of calcium and magnesium.

If you believe you have fat retention, then before taking the drastic step of surgery, just TRY significantly reducing your intake of salt and salty food, eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables (because their potassium content helps to remove excess sodium and excess water from the body) and make sure you are having sufficient calcium and magnesium and vitamin D. - See http://aboutsalt.blogspot.com/search/label/calcium and BBC webpage about calcium from The Truth About Food series of programmes

Beware of cowboy cosmetic surgery!

Doctors warn of 'McSurgery' in quick fix operations boom - Independent on Sunday

Extract:

"A huge increase in the number of cosmetic surgery treatments carried out by unqualified or insufficiently qualified people is leading to the "McDonaldisation" of the industry, doctors warned yesterday.

Surgeons spoke out in response to news that a New Zealand cosmetic surgery company is offering doctors a franchise after just two days' training at a hotel in Manchester.

The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) said that high-pressure sales techniques and cowboy operators were fuelling a booming market in Botox, face peels and laser treatment, some of which can result in poor treatments, injuries or, in extreme cases, death.

Paul Stapleton, of the Mapperley Park Clinic in Nottingham, said: "It's a McDonald's franchise approach to cosmetic surgery. It's a continuation of alarming developments in the field, which hasn't been helped by the Government's U-turn on plans to regulate cosmetic surgery."

The franchise deal was offered to ordinary GPs who had paid £2,000 a head to a New Zealand company called Appearance Medicine for the training weekend at the Marriott Hotel in Manchester. After practising Botox injections on volunteer hotel staff the GPs were offered equipment to start a practice in exchange for £35,000 and 10 per cent of future profits."

Do Botox parties need to be regulated?

Ministers accused of bottling out of Botox clampdown - Guardian

Extract:

"The government was yesterday accused of "bottling out" of introducing regulations to clamp down on Botox parties and beauty clinics which offer aesthetic fillers to disguise wrinkles and plump up lips.

Although surgeons who perform face-lifts and liposuction are subject to some regulation, high street beauticians who offer Botox and fillers are not. And while Botox is a prescription drug which should only be given by a doctor or a nurse under supervision, there are suspicions that the rules are sometimes broken.

An expert working group reporting in January 2005 was also concerned by reports of Botox parties, where champagne was consumed and women who wanted to lose their laughter lines were offered two jabs for the price of one.

The government accepted the report's recommendation that clinics offering Botox and fillers should be regulated by the Healthcare Commission, which monitors the work of the NHS. But yesterday the health minister Lord Hunt said the industry would have to regulate itself. "Cosmetic surgery providers have shown real commitment to improving levels of quality and safety, and so I have decided to ask the industry to take the lead in further improving standards," he said."

What are normally considered as signs of aging or diseases of aging are not normally caused by the passage of the years; they are often the cumulative effect of dieting, poor nutrition and the side-effects of many drugs which are too readily prescribed, often for too long a time, in too high a dose and without adequate monitoring.

To preserve your youthful looks as long as possible eat good meals prepared without the addition of salt and eat plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables, and avoid taking drugs even if they are prescribed by a doctor, unless they are really necessary and are properly monitored. NEVER go on a diet! - ALL diets in which you eat fewer calories than your body requires are harmful. - Read page http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/story.html

Medical tourism is on the increase as more Britons go abroad for cosmetic surgery, operations, etc.

Surgical breaks on rise as hols offer new look - Guardian

Extract:

"Research published today reveals that medical tourism is on the increase as more Britons go abroad for cosmetic surgery, operations and post-operative relaxation. Last year they spent £60m on these breaks - the largest cut of total UK spending of £135m on health and wellness holidays.

A quarter of Britons would now consider recuperating overseas after an illness or operation and 12% would consider surgery abroad because of lower prices, Mintel's Health and Wellness Holidays report says. Demand was initially fuelled by lower cosmetic surgery prices abroad."
