Hewitt tells GPs to 'stop pocketing profits'
Extract:
"Patricia Hewitt, the Health Secretary, yesterday urged GPs to stop pocketing the profits they were making under lucrative new pay deals and start reinvesting the money in their practices.
Miss Hewitt said she was in talks with the medical profession to see if she could persuade more family doctors to plough money back into services.
Her comments follow accusations that ministers blundered during negotiations that led to a deal in which the average earnings of thousands of GPs has risen above £100,000 a year.
The bill for the huge pay increases is now widely acknowledged as one of the key factors in fuelling the record £1.3 billion deficit run up by front-line NHS trusts last year.
While Miss Hewitt sought to defend the pay deal, she conceded yesterday that she was concerned that many GPs were taking a large proportion of their profits out of the practice rather than reinvesting in services."
