Some 400 hectares of maize found to have been grown with genetically modified seeds have been destroyed throughout Hungary deputy state secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development Lajos Bognar said. The GMO maize has been ploughed under, but pollen has not spread from the maize, he added. Unlike several EU members, GMO seeds are banned in Hungary.

"Tonnes of toxic waste collected from British municipal dumps is being sent illegally to Africa in flagrant breach of this country’s obligation to ensure its rapidly growing mountain of defunct televisions, computers and gadgets are disposed of safely.

Hundreds of thousands of discarded items, which under British law must be dismantled or recycled by specialist contractors, are being packaged into cargo containers and shipped to countries such as Nigeria and Ghana, where they are stripped of their raw metals by young men and children working on poisoned waste dumps.

In a joint investigation by The Independent, Sky News, and Greenpeace, a television that had been broken beyond repair was tracked to an electronics market in Lagos, Nigeria, after being left at a civic amenity site in Basingstoke run by Hampshire Country Council. Under environmental protection laws it was classified as hazardous waste and should never have left the UK."

Greenpeace has asked Senate to ban GMO rice.

MANILA, Philippines - Environmental group Greenpeace asked the Senate to ban the sale of genetically modified organism (GMO) rice, as it opened a photo exhibit highlighting the importance of rice. The group cited the importance of rice to Filipino culture, saying this is why it must be protected from risky genetic modification. "Greenpeace is here at the Senate to lobby our senators to enact a legislation to protect our most important staple food from the inherent risks of genetic engineering. Genetic engineering is an unproven, unpredictable and unnecessary technology. The resulting genetically-modified food crops threaten human health, the environment, and farmers' livelihoods," said Greenpeace Southeast Asia Genetic Engineering Campaigner Daniel Ocampo, in a statement on the group's Web site (www.greenpeace.org.ph).

"Plans to allow genetically modified crops to be grown throughout Europe have been shelved amid fears of a public backlash against "Frankenstein foods".

The European Commission has failed to find enough support for its plans to lift a nine-year-old freeze on GM crops being grown on a commercial basis.

Officials were forced to drop plans to produce a penicillin-resistant GM potato after it became clear that a bloc of countries led by Austria, Greece and Luxembourg would vote against it.

Commission proposals to release the potato, developed by BASF for use in industrial starch, were withdrawn by the German EU presidency ahead of a meeting of Europe's environment ministers last week.

"It became clear that there was no way to get a majority for the first approval of a GM crop since 1998, so it has been taken off the agenda," said an official.

Many EU governments are strongly swayed by the campaign against GM foods which sprang up in the late 1990s. This is despite scientific advice, the approval of the European Food Safety Authority and the growing threat of a trade war with the US.

"Consumers, most of whom have no desire to eat GM produce, expect politicians to put their health, food safety and the environment before the vested interests of a few agro-chemical companies," said a Greenpeace spokesman yesterday."
