I watched Fish Unwrapped tonight on Channel 4 Dispatches

I watched Fish Unwrapped on Channel 4's Dispatches tonight, excellently presented by Alex Thomson. The lax hygiene standards, poor adherence to regulations, and inadequate inspection that obtain in some of the fishing areas from where the UK sources its fish led me to conclude that consumers here cannot trust the safety of much of the fish on sale in supermarkets. If you and your family ever eat fish fingers I suggest you watch this programme using the link I have given. I think you may well decide not to eat them any more. And I suspect there will be fewer takers for prawns after watching the programme: the thought of eating prawns injected with dirty liquid to bulk them up in order to sell the dirty liquid at the same price as the prawns... - Yuk! - Dunno quite what to recommend except that getting out of the EU would be a start, since the EU favours big business and the food industry over mere consumers/taxpayers.

More about danger from toxic mercury in the food chain - Think about how much and which type of fish you eat.

World on alert over toxic mercury in food chain - Daily Telegraph report.

Extract:

"A worldwide alert about rising levels of toxic mercury in the food chain is issued today by scientists.

The risks posed by mercury-contaminated fish are now big enough to trigger a warning to the public to be careful about how much and which fish they eat.

Children and women of childbearing age should take particular care, they say.

Fish and shellfish have a natural tendency to concentrate mercury in their bodies, often in the form of methylmercury, a toxic organic form.

Species high in the food chain, such as swordfish, king mackerel, albacore tuna, shark and tilefish, contain higher concentrations of mercury.

There are concerns about the effects the mercury could have on humans, particularly unborn children. Methylmercury exposure may also increase the risk of cardiovascular disease."

Pregnant mothers warned about dangers from eating fish that contain mercury

Mothers-to-be warned of mercury threat - Guardian article

Extract:

"An important source of the metal in the atmosphere is fossil fuels, especially coal. From here, it is deposited in waterways and the sea where it is taken up by aquatic organisms. As it moves up the food chain it becomes concentrated and can reach high levels in large predatory fish, such as tuna, shark and swordfish. Mercury is particularly dangerous for the developing foetus, according to John Munthe at the Swedish Environmental Research Institute in Gothenburg. "If the foetus is exposed during the stage when the nervous system is developing this can cause permanent damage," he said.

It can also cause health problems in adults. Recent evidence shows that exposure increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, and can lead to brain damage."
