Protection from the hair loss caused by chemotherapy
BBC News reports that using a scalp cooler can prevent much of the loss of hair that often results as a side-effect of cancer chemotherapy, and features the personal experience of Melanie Rowland, who said the results had been worth the five hours of painful icy cold, because her hair is very important to her.
You can reduce your risk of most cancers and most other degenerative diseases by
1) avoiding prescription drugs unless they are really necessary and
2) minimising your intake of salt/sodium and salty food
3) giving up dieting - permanently

Chemotherapy contributes to a quarter of cancer deaths: study
The following post along with the Comment that accompanies it is copied and pasted from the Dr Rath Foundation's newsletter:
A new study has raised serious questions about the use of chemotherapy for late-stage cancer patients. The review of 600 cancer patients in Britain who died within 30 days of treatment has found that one in four of the deaths was either caused or hastened by the chemotherapy.

Comment: The use of toxic chemotherapy and other dangerous approaches to the treatment of cancer primarily serves one goal: to use the cancer epidemic as a global market for the pharmaceutical investment business with patented drugs. Unbeknownst to many of the patients who undergo these treatments, their most frequent side-effects include the causing of additional cancers - thus turning the cancer disease into a financial goldmine for the pharmaceutical industry. To learn about Dr. Rath’s discovery in cancer, and discover how the natural amino acid lysine and vitamin C can safely and effectively control cancer metastasis without the horrific side-effects suffered by chemotherapy patients, click here.

Risk of brain damage from anti-cancer chemotherapy drug
'Brain damage risk' with chemotherapy drug
Extract from the Telegraph:
"A chemotherapy drug used to treat thousands of cancer patients could cause serious brain damage with effects that are felt for years, research suggests today.
The drug, 5-fluorouracil (5-FU), which is one of the most commonly prescribed anti-cancer medicines, is used for tumours of the breast, ovary, colon, stomach, skin, pancreas and bladder.
However, tests showed that it destroys brain cells and could be responsible for side effects known as "chemo brain", which include memory loss, poor concentration, and in more extreme cases, seizures, impaired vision and dementia. Most chemotherapy drugs are toxic to some degree, often noticeable because of hair loss and nausea. They can affect healthy as well as cancerous cells.
Doctors have urged patients not to abandon the drug as it is an effective weapon against cancer.
The findings, reported today in the Journal of Biology, could explain some of the neurological side effects associated with chemotherapy.
Eight out of 10 breast cancer patients reported some form of mental impairment after chemotherapy. Studies have found that up to a fifth had problems that lasted for years. The research, from the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York state, showed that 5-FU attacks the cells in the brain that play a crucial role in the central nervous system.
They produce myelin, the fatty material that enables signals between cells to be transmitted rapidly and efficiently.
However, myelin deteriorates quickly and has to be constantly replenished.
Without a healthy population of these cells to renew it, normal communication between brain cells is disrupted. Scans of cancer patients with mental difficulties have shown evidence of loss of myelin leading to the loss of nerve fibres making up the "white matter" in the brain.
The researchers treated mice with doses of 5-FU comparable with those given to cancer patients and also exposed brain cells in dishes to the drug.
Months after exposure, the key cells both in the cell cultures and the brains of mice were undergoing extensive damage.
The disruption was so severe that after six months the cells had virtually disappeared from the mice.
Dr Mark Noble, of the medical centre, said: "It is clear that, in some patients, chemotherapy appears to trigger a degenerative condition in the central nervous system."
You can lower your risk of developing most cancers by avoiding salt and salty food.Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Hopes raised yet again about cancer treatments. - This time it involves genes and screening.
Gene find raises hope for gentler, highly effective cancer treatments - Guardian
Extract:
"A cluster of genes which can make cancer cells thousands of times more sensitive to chemotherapy have been discovered by scientists, an advance that could pave the way for highly effective, pain free cancer treatment.
Researchers in the US used a new screening technique to scan more than 20,000 genes in lung-cancer cells which led them to uncover those cells which responded to a chemotherapy drug.
They found 87 genes that made tumours more vulnerable to the drug, paclitaxel, when their activity was reduced or blocked. Blocking the action of some of them made lung cancer cells 10,000 times more sensitive to paclitaxel.
The discovery means it could be possible to personalise cancer treatments so that the cancerous tissue is targeted more efficiently while healthy cells are left unharmed, thus making treatment far less debilitating. It raises the possibility of lowering chemotherapy doses and reducing the side effects of drugs, without compromising their effectiveness."
Best not to hold your breath! - How often do we see claims of breakthroughs and great hopes? - If headlines cured cancer and 'news' were therapeutic there'd certainly be no cancer any more!
See this further extract:
""There's nothing here immediately useful to those individuals with cancer. We're still at the beginning, but this sort of approach is very effective. It shortens the discovery process, which makes the development process so much quicker."
Further research on animals is needed; the first clinical trials on cancer patients can only begin in no fewer than three to five years. The study looked at isolated human cells in the laboratory, and more research will be needed to determine whether blocking the genes in animals has the same effect. In the long term, this discovery could play a part in the way new cancer drugs are designed."
Here are some measures you can take that are very practical, very effective, absolutely immediate, cost-free and drug-free, that will greatly reduce your risk of developing cancer:
1. - The MOST IMPORTANT is to stop eating salt and salty food. - See sodium foods
http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/socio.html http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/conditions.html
This one measure will significantly reduce the risk/severity of all the usual deadly diseases, not just cancer....heart disease, heart attack, stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes, etc and most of the disabling and aging conditions....obesity, Alzheimer's disease, osteoporosis, insomnia, headaches, migraines, pains of many kinds...
2. - If you are wanting to lose weight YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST GIVE UP DIETING. - IT IS VERY HARMFUL AND COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY.
3. - Eat plenty of proper food - not diet rubbish - including plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables.
4. - Give up smoking. (I do mean give up; I don't mean cut down.)
5. - Avoid prescribed medications as far as you possibly can. - These drugs very frequently have adverse side-effects which are very frequently extremely harmful.
6. - Cut down on alcohol if you drink a lot.
7. - Make sure you are getting enough calcium in what you eat. If you don't get enough, try having some low fat yoghurt in addition to what you usually eat.
8. - Make sure you are getting enough Vitamin D in what you eat. - You may be short of Vitamin D because you have cut down on milk and other dairy products in the mistaken idea that these are fattening. They do not cause weight gain, unless salt has been added to them, so do not eat salted butter. Milk is a good source of both calcium and Vitamin D. Vitamin D is needed for the absorption of calcium and the regulation of calcium levels in the blood. - Shortage of Vitamin D is quite common, especially in elderly people.
Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Snapshot reveals rare cancer (retinoblastoma) in girl's eye
Snapshot reveals rare cancer in girl's eye - Telegraph
Extract:
"Carenza Thomas's love of being photographed has saved her life.
While testing a new digital camera, her mother, Kathryn Thomas, noticed something strange about her daughter's eyes. She was puzzled when she viewed the pictures and saw that one eye appeared bright white.
Kathryn took her eight-month-old daughter to a doctor, who diagnosed a rare form of eye cancer.
Further tests found several tumours in Carenza's left eye - which had reflected the light and caused her eye to appear white in photographs.
After two years of chemotherapy the toddler, who has an older sister, Diane, five, is now enjoying an active and healthy life.
Kathryn, 34, said if it had not been for the photograph they may not have caught the cancer in time to save Carenza. She said: "It doesn't bear thinking about what would have happened if we didn't notice something was up in that picture."
