Official leaflets for people of Scotland advising them to make sure they get enough Vitamin D - Well done, Ryan McLaughlin!

Schoolboy, Ryan McLaughlin, tirelessly campaigned on this issue and petitioned the Scottish Parliament to produce new guidelines on vitamin D supplements for children and pregnant women. His efforts have been successful. See BBC News report.

Because Scotland gets less sunshine than the more southerly regions of Britain, it is inevitably more difficult to get sufficient Vitamin D, the 'sunshine vitamin.' Inadequate levels of this vitamin result in many health problems, including more fragile bones, excess weight, muscle weakness and many more. (Click on the Vitamin D label just beneath this post if you would like more information about Vitamin D.) Possibly the most important of Vitamin D's contributions to health is protection from infections. - If you have enough Vitamin D you are far less likely to catch colds and flu, etc.

If getting out into the sun is a problem for you and you decide to take supplements of the sunshine vitamin, the best version is Vitamin D3. Vitamin D is also essential to metabolise calcium. Read about dairy calcium, fat retention and vitamin D on my webpage here.

If you are overweight and kidding yourself that you never feel like breakfast

I've got to tell you that, honestly, doing without breakfast will not help you to lose weight. In fact, it's more likely to make you gain weight. They say you should 'Breakfast like a king, Lunch like a prince and Dine like a pauper'. That's what they say is the best way to stay healthy.

And what I say is, don't go without any meals at all, thinking that that is an easy way to lose excess weight. It isn't. It is an easy way to get run down and damage your health.

Here is the information you need to lose weight safely, easily and fast by cutting down on salt and salty food:

Dr Iain Brownlee and Prof Jeff Pearson of Newcastle University believe that seaweed may prove significant in reducing obesity. I don't.

The suggestion made by these researchers is widely reported today. See this BBC News report and this Press Release Could seaweed reduce obesity by reducing fat absorption? for example.

Their claim is that the addition of dietary fibre from alginate, one of the world’s largest commercially-used seaweeds, could reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body by around 75%. Call me cynical, but my sceptical antennae are roused by the information that this seaweed is a highly commercial product. No doubt a number of food and drink companies are hoping to profit from this research.

Well, maybe alginate could significantly reduce the amount of fat absorbed by the body. I don't know. But whether it could or not is, I submit, largely irrelevant. Reducing fat intake does not reduce obesity, and low fat intake is not conducive to health.

Excess weight is caused by sensitivity to salt and NOT by overeating. - Sensitivity to salt leads to fluid retention and this sometimes leads on to fat retention. - Fluid retention (i.e. excess weight) is easily reduced by cutting down on intake of salt and salty food. Eating plenty of fruit and unsalted vegetables makes the fluid loss even speedier. These measures also reduce fat retention. In addition, fat retention can be reduced by increasing intake of calcium, magnesium and potassium.

And WHEN is someone in Government going to inform people that the most extreme cases of obesity - morbid obesity - are the result of taking prescription drugs incautiously prescribed, often in high dose, by doctors inadequately informed about their side-effects? - If we could have a Government initiative to curb the massive over-prescribing by doctors, that would reduce obesity very effectively indeed!

Here is the correct information:

Lose weight safely, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Do not believe the lies of the Diet-Gurus who tell you that by eating fewer calories than your body requires you will 'burn off' excess fat.

You won't! Your body's calorie needs will have to be met somehow. You will lose some of your precious firm flesh: some of your skin will be sacrificed and over time you will notice its loss as the skin becomes thinner.

The healthy body has a natural way of ridding itself of excess fat: it is excreted in the faeces. In this matter, a healthy body means a body that is not deficient in calcium. If your body is retaining excess fat then it isn't a diet you need, it is more calcium.

If you are overweight/obese, your blood vessel walls have been weakened by salt sensitivity and excess fluid in the bloodstream. This salt problem results in the body being depleted of calcium as calcium is excreted in the urine. You can reduce the excess blood volume by eating less salt and salty food.

FAT RETENTION

Consider this: if the Diet-Gurus were to tell you the truth about how to lose excess weight (i.e. by avoiding salt and salty food) they would no longer be able to peddle their dangerous nonsense; they would be out of a job and their source of income would dry up.

Diets don't work! Give up dieting! - Give it up forever! Diets lose you your looks and your health; they do not make you slim.

High salt intake can cause heart disease - as well as obesity, high blood pressure, and stroke.

To lose excess weight you need to excrete more water and excrete excess fat

To lose excess weight you need to excrete excess water and excrete more fat; you do not need to 'slim' or adopt a low-fat diet or to tire yourself out with strenuous exercise.

To excrete excess water/fluid you must cut down on salt and salty food, and make sure you eat plenty of fruit and (unsalted) vegetables.

To excrete more fat you need also to eat more calcium, e.g. dairy yoghurt.

Are Brits really eating themselves to death or is it misinformation that is the problem?

Eating ourselves to death: Britain's fat epidemic
article in the Independent on Sunday

The comments beneath the article are interesting. There are the usual sort whose writers blame fat people themselves for their obesity and there are more thoughtful contributions by people who have given the matter much more thought and realise the problem is multi-faceted. - Here are my own thoughts:

Dieting is a snare and a delusion, and the frequent exhortation thrown at fat people to 'just eat less and exercise more' has not a jot of evidence to support its efficacy. - It absolutely does not make obese people less obese. Dieting fosters malnutrition and dietary deficiencies.

Cutting down on salt and salty food reduces weight easily and safely by reducing the fluid retention which is part of all obesity. Increasing calcium intake reduces weight by increasing fat excretion in the faeces (details on the BBC's website in the BBC2 "Truth About Food" pages from a series a few years ago) and there is growing evidence that excess weight is associated with Vitamin D deficiency as well as with calcium deficiency.

Many prescription drugs cause massive fluid retention and therefore morbid obesity, including steroids like prednisone and prednisolone, HRT, tricyclic anti-depressants like amitriptyline, anti-psychotics, etc.

Obesity is a complex illness, ill-served by the simplistic 'solutions' of the uninformed.
