Pringles and other stackable chips/crisps are not good for your health

Pringles and other stackable chips/crisps are not good for your health. They contain carbohydrates processed at high heat and this processing creates Acrylamide, a cancer-causing and potentially neurotoxic chemical, which you ingest when you eat these snacks. Read what Dr Mercola has to say about this. The more natural and less processed your food is, the better for your health.

Energy saving light bulbs emit carcinogens when switched on

Read the report in the Telegraph. It is by no means the first time that there have been reports of cancer-causing chemicals in energy saving light bulbs, as you will see if you type something like 'light bulb cancer warning' into your favourite search box. But it has become a greater and more pressing problem for us now because of the "EU direction to phase out traditional incandescent lighting by the end of this year." There is also the big problem of the mercury that is contained within these bulbs. The mercury may well become a big contamination problem on landfill sites of the future. We little realised the multiplicity of costly, harmful problems that being a member of the EU would prove to be, when, with no mandate to do so, a former Tory government signed us into membership of this wasteful, kleptocratic and dangerous federation.

Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes

Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes in this BBC report. Other cured, salted, smoked and processed meats are also advised against. The reason given (by the World Cancer Research Fund) is that these meats increase the risk of bowel cancer in later life.

I agree with the WCRF that these meats are not good for children. Salty food, in particular, is not good for children. As well as increasing the risk of bowel cancer (and most other cancers too) it is the cause of child obesity. Unfortunately the Food Standards Agency says it is OK to give children cured, salted, smoked and processed meats occasionally. - Well it's not OK - not if you want your children to be as healthy as possible, and also to avoid becoming overweight.

Salt, of course, could properly be regarded as a carcinogen.

F.D.A. has concerns about Toxic Substances in Electronic Cigarettes

The New York Times reports that toxic substances and carcinogens have been found in electronic cigarettes analysed by the Food and Drug Administration. "The agency and public health officials are especially worried that electronic cigarettes, which are offered in flavors including cherry and bubblegum, are enticing to children and may be easy for those under 18 to obtain online or in malls."

Senators investigate Merced groundwater pollution

The state's two U.S. senators want to know whether groundwater pollution in Merced caused by pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. is connected to illnesses suffered by some local residents. Sen. Dianne Feinstein has sent a staff member to Merced to investigate. Sen. Barbara Boxer's office is making local inquiries. An attorney for Merck says a subsidiary of the company polluted the site with Chromium 6, the carcinogen Erin Brockovich campaigned against when it was found in Hinkley's drinking water.

Researchers claim evidence that mouthwashes containing alcohol increase cancer risk, and that they should be labelled with health warnings.

Mouthwash 'can cause oral cancer'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"They claimed there was now "sufficient evidence" that mouthwashes containing alcohol contribute to an increased risk of the disease that they should be taken off supermarket shelves and labelled with health warnings.

In a review of the latest studies, the scientists found evidence that the ethanol in mouthwash was allowing cancer-causing substances to permeate the lining of the mouth more easily and therefore cause harm.

Professor Michael McCulloch, chairman of the Australian Dental Association's therapeutics committee and associate professor of oral medicine at Melbourne University, said the alcohol in mouthwashes "increases the permeability of the mucosa" to carcinogens like nicotine.

He added that a toxic breakdown product of alcohol called acetaldehyde that may accumulate in the oral cavity when swished around the mouth is also a carcinogen."

If you are a frequent flyer you may be interested to read here about poisons in the air supply on planes

Christopher Booker's notebook - Sunday Telegraph

See the first part: "Pilots disabled by poisoned air"

Extract:

"The essence of the problem is that the air supply to the cockpits and cabins of many modern airliners is bled off from their engines, where it becomes contaminated with carcinogens, immunosuppressants and highly toxic organo-phosphorus (OP) chemicals, especially a compound known as tricresyl phosphate (TCP) used as an anti-wear additive. Both crew and passengers are thus exposed to small amounts of OPs and a cocktail of other nasties. OPs, more commonly used as pesticides, cumulatively attack the nervous system, causing disorders ranging from nausea, headaches and dizziness to, eventually, serious mental and physical breakdown.

Although this problem was first identified 30 years ago, following a near-fatal incident in the US, it was kept so quiet that when hundreds of pilots in the 1980s began to experience adverse reactions they had no idea why. One of the first to track down the cause was Susan Michaelis, flying BA146s in Australia, when in 1997 she was permanently grounded by severe illness. Two years later, at her instigation, an official inquiry by the Australian Senate heard enough expert evidence to confirm that the cause of so many pilots and cabin crew suffering ill-health was contamination of cabin air by TCP and other chemicals.

In 2001 the cause was taken up in Britain by Captain Loraine, a senior member of the British Air Line Pilots Association (BALPA), who flew Boeing 757s. But from the industry and regulators, such as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), they met with a wall of denials. Although more pilots were suffering from "aerotoxic syndrome" every year, there began a cover-up which uncannily parallelled the methods used by government in the 1990s when the health of thousands of farmers was destroyed by OPs in sheep dip.
