Nutrition Science or Nutrition Science Betrayed?

The War for Nutrition Science Integrity
"The American Society for Nutrition (ASN), the largest society for nutrition researchers in the US, openly receives support from pharmaceutical companies like Abbott Nutrition and Martek Biosciences, genetic engineering and pesticide giant Monsanto, food processor ConAgra, and junk food suppliers and producers Coca-Cola, Mars, Kraft, McDonald’s, General Mills, and Kellogg’s, not to mention the Sugar Association, Inc. (among many others). Think about that: an organization claiming “excellence in nutrition research and practice” receives major funding from companies making drugs, pesticides, and some of the most health-damaging foods on the planet."

We must all stand up and be counted in the battle against pharmaceutical junk, food junk and manipulated junk science. Good nutrition should be our civilisation’s foundation and a legacy to be bequeathed to future generations. Our health is being sold by scoundrels and bought by arch-criminals.

Department of Health favours Big Business over Public Health for its policy on Obesity, Alcohol and diet-related disease

Read Guardian article. "The Department of Health is putting the fast food companies McDonald's and KFC and processed food and drink manufacturers such as PepsiCo, Kellogg's, Unilever, Mars and Diageo at the heart of writing government policy on obesity, alcohol and diet-related disease, the Guardian has learned."

I haven't read all of the hundreds of readers' comments published beneath the article, but I've read a lot, and not one of those I've read was other than deeply cynical about this catastrophic decision by the DoH. Even the catering company guilty of providing innocent school-children with salt-laden, additive-rich, nutrient-free crap called Turkey Twizzlers, instead of with proper food for their school dinners years ago, is to play a part in the advice given to the asinine DoH.

Ms Salt feeds her babies salty food. This means that the triplets will become and stay fat. Poor little souls.

The Telegraph reports that Leanne Salt is feeding her eight-month-old babies, Deanna, Daisy and Finlee, McDonald's burgers, crisps and ready meals. These are highly salted foods and completely unsuitable for babies.

To look after three little babies must be a very tiring job and it is understandable that their mother turns to ways to cut down the work she has to do. Unfortunately, by choosing high salt foods she is storing up a host of health problems for her children. They will become fat and have high blood pressure. They will be at risk of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. They will die younger than they should.

The grave dangers of a salty diet for babies and young children should be stressed to pregnant mothers so that their babies can be protected from this terrible damage to their health.

It is not the calories that are the problem; it is the salt content.

High salt intake is a major contributory factor in many chronic health problems, including obesity.

There's a lot of hidden salt in foods in which you would not expect to find it.

Salt Lurks in Unsuspected Foods
Extract:

"Dec. 1, 2008 -- Even if you never touch a salt shaker and steer clear of potato chips and french fries, you are probably eating more salt than you think and much more than is good for you, an investigation from Consumer Reports shows.

Researchers analyzed 37 processed foods and identified some surprising sources of hidden sodium.

Among the least expected findings:

  • A 1/2-cup serving of a low-fat cottage cheese had twice as much sodium (360 milligrams) as a 1-ounce serving of regular potato chips (180 milligrams).
  • A Premium Caesar Salad with grilled chicken from McDonald's had more than twice the salt (890 milligrams) as a large order of McDonald's fries (350 milligrams). And that's without the dressing."
It's best to cook it yourself so that you can control the amount of salt in the meal, and if you buy processed food make sure you lead the label and choose a lower salt/option if you can. Even if you lower your salt intake by only a modest amount you will feel better and your health will benefit. Try to keep to the lower salt intake and your taste for salt will become less, just like your taste for sugar lessens when you cut down on sugar in tea or coffee.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

McDonald's and a cup of coffee, pubs, salt, salty snacks, freebie nibbles, damage to health...

Many years ago while on holiday I spent a few hours in Gloucester and had a cup of coffee and nothing else in a branch of McDonald's there. - It was the hottest and the worst-tasting coffee I have ever had in my life...(o: and it was the only time I have ever visited a McDonald's.

People have told me that when you eat at McDonald's the person who serves you the meal always sprinkles salt onto the chips. - Is this true? or not true? or no longer true?

If true it would go a long way towards explaining why McDonald's meals tend to make their customers fatter...

Also in years past I've been in lots of places like pubs in which there were free nibbles provided - salted peanuts and other salted snacks. - It took me a long time to realise that these freebies were not provided out of generosity...(o: - but with the intention of making the customers thirsty so that they would buy more drinks. - Do these establishments still provide free salty snacks? - If so it's a practice that should not be encouraged because salt harms the health of a great many people.

Lose weight, reduce fluid retention, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Wider implications of the flawed theory that excess calorie intake causes obesity

Sandwiches often contain more salt and more calories than a Big Mac

Sandwiches with more calories than Big Mac

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Leading sandwich chains are selling products that frequently contain more calories, salt and fat than a Big Mac – and failing to inform their customers.

The National Consumer Council, the Government's consumer watchdog, called on shops to provide better information to its customers, some of whom are consuming two-thirds of their daily recommended salt and saturated fat intake with just one sandwich.

Greggs, the country's largest chain of sandwich shops, not only fails to provide any information in-store, the company does not give out any details on its website, leaving customers in the dark that a £1.95 chicken sandwich contains 3.6 grams of salt – two-thirds of the 6 grams doctors say is the maximum adults should consume in a day.

Both Eat and Pret a Manger, which pride themselves on selling gourmet lunches full of fresh ingredients, do not give out information in their shops, either on packaging or in a leaflet.

Customers have to go to the company's websites to find details.

In contrast, McDonald's – following a major revamp in recent years – prints full details on every burger box and bag of chips."

"Marks & Spencer's Oakham chicken and pancetta caesar sandwich contains more salt and saturated fat than a portion of chips combined with a Big Mac burger from McDonald's.

Many of Tesco's sandwiches, such as its red cheddar and tomato, contain more than half the recommended daily amount of saturated fat – linked to heart disease and considered by doctors to be the most unhealthy form of fat."

It is important for information about salt content to be provided, since so many people are sensitive to salt and need to restrict their salt intake. - In my opinion, information about calories is not important, because excess weight and all its attendant illnesses - hypertension, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, impaired liver and kidney function, premature aging, etc. are caused by fluid retention and not by eating too many calories. Obesity/Overweight is easily reduced by avoiding salt and salty food.

TV loophole lets children watch junk food ads. - IT'S THE HIGH SALT JUNK FOOD - LIKE CHEESTRINGS AND CRISPS - THAT DOES GREATEST HARM TO CHILDREN...

TV loophole lets children watch junk food ads

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Millions of children are being exposed to junk food advertisements on television despite regulations to stamp them out, says a new report.

Mars bars, Cheestrings snacks, McDonald's restaurants, Pringles crisps and a host of other junk food brands are regularly being advertised during programmes popular with young children, says research by the consumer group Which?.

TV loophole lets children watch junk food ads

Complicated rules introduced by the broadcasting regulator Ofcom have failed to prevent children aged nine and under from being exposed to a regular stream of crisp, chocolate and fast food commercials, its report says.

The rules, which came into force in April, ban any product high in sugar, saturated fat or salt being advertised during a programme watched predominantly by children. However, the rules are based on the proportion of children watching a programme rather than the actual number.

Which? analysed all programmes broadcast during two weeks in September and found that only two of the top 10 most popular shows watched by the under-10s, in terms of numbers, were subject to the restrictions.

The three most popular programmes were all family orientated - Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway, X-Factor and You've Been Framed - watched by 1.2 million under-10s.

BEWARE OF EXTREMELY HIGH SALT CONTENT IN MEALS AT PIZZA HUT, KFC, McDONALD'S AND BURGER KING. - CHILDREN ARE ESPECIALLY AT RISK.

Extracts:

"Family meals at fast food outlets contain more than twice the recommended daily amount of salt, a new study claims.

Health campaigners say the "big four" restaurants - Pizza Hut, KFC, McDonald's and Burger King - are behaving irresponsibly by making some meals almost as salty as sea water.

A report by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) named Pizza Hut as the worst offender, with an average family meal containing more than twice the maximum level of salt for adults, and almost four times the limit for a six-year-old child.

Prof Graham MacGregor, the chairman of Cash and the director of St George's Hospital Medical School blood pressure department, accused the fast food chains of using excessive salt so children become hooked on them and help drive up profits.

"Salt is very addictive," he said. "You see this in children when you give them good, home-cooked food without much salt, they think it does not taste right."

"Cash is calling for firms to slash salt levels in their products and to display traffic light symbols on all products so customers can see at a glance how much their food contains."

Junk Food Makers are targeting children on the internet

Junk Food Makers reach children on internet - Telegraph

Extract:

"Food manufacturers were criticised yesterday for targeting their advertising at children on the internet and social networking websites.

Several major food companies have begun using the sites to promote their products following a ban on junk food advertising on television. In April, Ofcom, which regulates broadcasters, outlawed all adverts to children under nine years old that promoted sugary, salty or fatty foods. At the end of the year the ban extends to 15-year-olds.

However, Ofcom has no remit to regulate the internet, and adverts on websites are self-regulated by the advertising industry. The ban on junk food advertising also does not cover the cinema.

Campaigners argue that fast food chains and sweet companies are adopting new tactics to get around the TV ban.

Skittles, which are made by the confectionery giant Mars, have a profile on the popular social networking site Bebo. The page has already been viewed more than 50,000 times and attracted more than 3,500 "friends".

Meanwhile McDonald's is also targeting children on the internet. It features a Kids Zone on its website, which lets children play games that feature the company's clown mascot, Ronald McDonald.

In cinemas, the sugary cereal Coco Pops has placed adverts before the new Harry Potter film. Kellogg's, which makes Coco Pops, admits the advert would not be allowed during a children's programme on television.

Campaigners argue that all these tactics break the spirit, if not the letter, of the new regulations. Richard Watts, who heads the Sustain campaign, which has fought against junk food advertising, said: "I don't think it is a legitimate tactic to shift their advertising in this way. If Ofcom thinks that under 16-year-olds should be protected, that is a principle that should be carried through to other media. The country has to decide - given the rates of childhood obesity - whether we make sure all marketing is regulated or whether we let the problem continue.""

Beware the salty salad! (McDonald's)

McDonald's salads 'are saltier than a Big Mac' - Telegraph

Extract:

"Some McDonald's salads contain nearly a third more salt than a Big Mac burger and fries, new research shows.

A survey of 156 ready-made salads and pasta bowls from coffee shops and fast-food restaurants found that while the overall average of salt levels was healthy - 1.4g - nearly a fifth (19 per cent) had more than the 2g recommended for a meal.

The saltiest salad in the survey by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash) - the Thai noodle bowl from EAT - had 4.4g of salt per portion, nearly three quarters of the total recommended daily salt intake of 6g.

Cash said some salads should carry health warnings rather than manufacturers marketing them as healthy meals.

The research found the McDonald's crispy chicken Caesar and grilled chicken Caesar contained 3.5g and 3.3g of salt per portion respectively - more than the supposedly less healthy Big Mac and small fries, which contains 2.5g of salt.

Graham McGregor, a professor of cardiovascular medicine and chairman of Cash, said cutting salt intakes would save thousands of lives.

He added: "Many people think of a salad as a healthy lunch. And in many cases this is true and we would encourage people to look out for low salt, low fat salads as a good lunchtime option."

Bernard Matthews 'to lay off hundreds' of staff

Bernard Matthews 'to lay off hundreds'

Extracts:

"David Miliband, the Environment Secretary, made no mention of the redundancies when he gave an update to MPs of developments since the outbreak at the plant in Holton earlier this month which led to a cull of nearly 160,000 birds.

Mr Miliband told the Commons: "The expert advice available to me is that there is a constant, low risk of bird flu to the UK and higher risk during migration season.

"There can be no guarantee against further outbreaks. In fact, the only guarantee is that there is a continual risk." "

"YouGov's BrandIndex, which monitors consumer attitudes to 1,100 brands every day, revealed Bernard Matthews was now the second least liked brand in Britain. Only McDonald's has a worse public image problem.

Britain's biggest poultry producer was hit by allegations of a cover-up following the outbreak, amid claims that it had not been clear with the public about the transportation of turkey meat to the plant from Hungary, which had suffered an earlier outbreak of the H5N1 virus.

The company admitted it had imported meat from a supplier just a few miles from where the lethal disease was found in farmed geese last month, but denied it had broken any laws."
