This is Fluoride Awareness Week (Aug 7 - 13). You may, as I did, find it interesting to read Dr Mercola's latest article warning of possible dangers from drinking fluoridated water.

Should fluoride really be added to the drinking water supply?
Should fluoride be added to the drinking water supply? It looks like we have been grossly misled for decades by the 'experts' who have encouraged us to believe that it should. Read this excellent article and discover the facts. If you click on the 'water fluoridation' label beneath this blogpost you will find quite a lot of articles critical of adding fluoride to the water supply.

Water Fluoridation in the EU: VOICE presents evidence of adverse effects
EU Commission hearing exposes fatal flaws in water fluoridation
“VOICE, along with other environmental and health campaigners and international scientists, have presented detailed evidence of the adverse effects of adding fluoride to drinking water at an EU public hearing held in Brussels” said VOICE spokesperson Robert Pocock, who made a presentation to the public hearing in Brussels. “Its effects on bone and tooth enamel, the brain, kidney, thyroid function and the endocrine system regulating the body’s hormones were confirmed by reference to extensive scientific research” continued the spokesperson. Ireland and the UK are the only EU member states to deliberately fluoridate their citizens. The European Commission’s scientific committee on health and environmental risks (SCHER) is critically reviewing fluoride and fluoridation chemicals, following repeated questions from VOICE and other organisations, and Irish and UK MEPs. See VOICE of Irish Concern For The Environment.

European Commission agree to investigate health risks of fluoridated water
The European Commission has just opened a public consultation process to investigate the health risks of adding fluoride to public water supplies. The Irish health authorities, through the local councils, have added hydrofluorosilicic acid to public water supplies since 1960. However, unlike sodium and calcium fluoride used in toothpaste, Hydrofluorosilicic acid is an industrial waste by-product and a very unstable chemical which over time, accumulates in our bones and organs. There is a large and growing body of long term epidemiological evidence that links swallowed fluoride to osteoporosis, thyroid malfunctions, cancer, lower IQ in babies and many other side effects. MEP for Munster, Kathy Sinnott, welcomed the consultation saying "In my election campaign five years ago, I promised to challenge the fluoridation of our drinking water. It has taken us several years of lobbying to get the Commission to agree to this step but I am delighted that they have finally decided to take the issue seriously."

A fresh debate will begin this month about putting fluoride in drinking water if a health authority goes ahead with adding it to the supplies.
New row over adding of fluoride to drinking water
article in the Telegraph
Extract:
"Most residents of Southampton will have no choice but to receive fluoridated tap water if the South Central Strategic Health Authority agrees to the proposal. Its board is to make a decision on Thursday February 26 following a consultation.
While many health experts argue that adding fluoride will help improve children's teeth, critics believe it is a coercive form of "mass medication" with unproven benefits.
If fluoride is added it will increase the concentration of the chemical in Southampton's water twelvefold, from 0.08 parts per million (ppm) to one ppm."
Personally, I'm against adding fluoride to the drinking water supply.

Kathy Sinnott, MEP, says fluoride, hexafluorosilicic acid, in our water is a menace.
MEP says additive in our water is a menace
Every day, Irish sanitary authorities add hexafluorosilicic acid to public water supplies under the terms of the 1960 Fluoridation Act. Unlike the naturally occurring, poorly absorbed and therefore safer calcium fluoride found in toothpaste and mouthwash, hexafluorosilicic acid is an industrial waste by-product which is an active and highly absorbed molecule when swallowed. Over a lifetime of drinking small quantities of this fluoride, substantial amounts accumulate in the body, especially in hard tissue such as teeth and bone.

Fluoride could be added to almost half of all tap water under Government plans.
Fluoride could be added to 40pc of water
Article in the Telegraph
Extract:
"Officials want 40 per cent of England's water supply to be fluoridated to reduce high levels of tooth decay.
Dentists leaders believe that adding the chemical to the water supply could radically improve the condition of people's teeth, particularly in deprived areas.
Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, also backed the introduction of more fluoride into the water supply earlier this year.
Currently only around 10 per cent of all tap water has fluoride added, mainly in parts of the West Midlands and the North East."
I am very much against the addition of fluoride to tap water. Most toothpastes contain fluoride and using a fluoride toothpaste is a better way to get fluoride onto people's teeth than adding fluoride to the water supply.
