J&J Paid $68 Million to Settle Birth-Control Cases

I found this webpage with lots of useful information about Orth Evra birth-control patches - http://www.birthcontrolpatchsideeffects.com/

Johnson & Johnson has spent at least $68.7 million to settle hundreds of lawsuits filed by women who suffered blood clots, heart attacks or strokes after using the company's Ortho Evra birth-control patch, court records show. J&J, the world's largest maker of health-care products, avoided trials through the confidential settlements and hasn't released the financial details to investors. Of 562 complaints reviewed by Bloomberg News, the vast majority of users alleged the patch caused deep-vein thrombosis, or blood clots in the legs, and pulmonary embolisms, or blood clots in the lungs. Some blamed it for heart attacks or strokes. The complaints blamed Ortho Evra for the deaths of 20 women.

Desk-bound office workers at double DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) risk

Desk-bound workers at double DVT risk

Extracts from the Telegraph:

"Office workers who sit at a desk for eight hours a day and spend more than three hours without stretching double their risk of developing deep vein thrombosis (DVT), scientists have warned.

A study has confirmed that sitting for long periods is as dangerous as flying for raising the risk of potentially fatal blood clots.

Researchers in Southampton and New Zealand questioned 200 patients who were admitted to hospital for either blood clots or heart problems and compared how long each group had remained sitting, both in total and in one period without getting up.

Prof Richard Beasley, from Wellington Hospital, New Zealand, said: "The risk of developing blood clots with prolonged seated immobility is largely unrecognised. However, this study has shown that it is at least as important a factor as long-distance air travel."

"He said more research should be carried out to establish how the workplace environment affects rates of deep vein thrombosis and whether chairs could be designed to encourage a healthy blood flow in the lower limbs.

It is estimated that about one in 2,000 people develop DVT each year in Britain.

Hospital patients who have recently had surgery are at greatest risk. Pregnancy and obesity also increases the risk."

Since obesity is a factor in developing DVT, you can reduce your risk of DVT by eating less salt and salty food because this reduces obesity.

Airline passengers should be given the legal right to at least two inches more legroom to counter the threat of deep vein thrombosis

Airline passengers demand more legroom

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Airline passengers should be given the legal right to at least two inches more legroom to counter the threat of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), peers have said.

The gap should be widened from the current statutory minimum of 26 inches to at least 28.2 to take into account the fact that the travelling public were getting fatter and taller."

Obese people should be given the correct information/advice - namely that to lose weight easily and rapidly they need to give up dieting and concentrate instead on reducing their intake of salt/sodium and salty food.

Hospitals were yesterday ordered to assess every patient on admission to hospital for their risk of developing deadly blood clots.

Hospitals told to assess all patients for blood clot risk - Guardian

Extract:

"Hospitals were yesterday ordered to assess every patient on admission to hospital for their risk of developing deadly blood clots, in an attempt to prevent the 25,000 deaths a year from clots.

The risk of developing a fatal blood clot rises eightfold when people are admitted to hospital and doctors could prevent many of the deaths if they were on the look out for those most at risk, according to a high level report ordered by the chief medical officer.

Ministers immediately backed the plans.

Hospital staff should assess each patient for risks - including age, immobility or if they are on certain medications including the pill. Those most at risk should be routinely prescribed prophylactics, the report says.

Blood clots in the veins, known as Venousthromboembolism (VTE), are responsible for more deaths in the UK a year than breast cancers, road traffic accidents and Aids put together.

They include the most serious, deep vein thrombosis, and 50,000 a year die - half in hospital, where immobility and some surgical procedures increase the risk."
