If you are about to start taking amitriptyline then be prepared for weight gain, bloating, excessive thirst, painful breasts, swollen face, constipation, memory impairment and other problems.

If you are about to start taking amitriptyline then be prepared for weight gain, bloating, excessive thirst, painful breasts, swollen face, sodium retention, fluid retention, constipation, memory impairment and other problems. You can read here about the adverse effects of taking amitriptyline. The adverse effects are not temporary. You can mitigate the severity of these side-effects by seriously cutting down on salt and salty food.

Have you found that saline drips make you thirsty and make your hands and feet swell?

Have you found that saline drips make you extremely thirsty and make your hands and feet swell? Then you've had the same experience that I've had. It may well mean that you too are sensitive to salt, and that you too would greatly benefit by restricting your intake of salt and salty food. And if you ever have to have a saline drip in the future, it could be a good idea for you and your medical team to consider using a drip that contains potassium as well as sodium, instead of the usual saline drip.

If your medication gives you a dry mouth or makes you thirsty

If your medication gives you a dry mouth or makes you thirsty, then it may be causing fluid retention, and fluid retention results in weight gain and sensitivity to salt (and many other unpleasant and undesirable side-effects). If you want to reduce the weight gain then the options are: reducing the dosage, gradually weaning yourself off the drug, changing the medication to another, and/or seriously cutting down on salt and salty food. The most commonly prescribed drugs that tend to have this effect are anti-depressants, especially amitriptyline.

Prescription drugs can make you very thirsty

There are many prescription drugs that often cause great thirst, particularly if you are taking a high dose. These include:
antidepressants, especially amitriptyline,
steroids, including prednisone, prednisolone, cortisone and hydrocortisone,
HRT
and other medications containing oestrogen - like some birth control medication (contraceptives),
some anti-psychotic drugs, including Zyprexa (aka olanzapine) and other psychotropic drugs,
and some anti-epileptic/anticonvulsant drugs, notably valproate (trade name Epilim).

The thirst is because sodium retention/fluid retention/weight gain/salt sensitivity is a harmful side-effect of these drugs. To prevent or reduce the weight gained, you need to cut down on salt and salty food, because the sodium retention has made you sensitive to salt.

Salt can make you hungry and tired, as well as thirsty.

When overweight/obese people cut down on salt they lose weight, because for them, cutting down on salt reduces their thirst and excess fluid retention. Then, having less weight to carry round obviously means they become less tired. And in addition, because of having less weight to carry around, they need less food to provide them with the energy/calories to carry their lighter body around, so they feel less hungry.

There is no need to diet to lose weight! - Dieting makes you more tired, cold and hungry. It is not necessary, it does not make you less obese, and it is usually harmful.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver damage and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! Remember: pharmaceuticals don't just damage people; they can damage pets too.

For example, amitriptyline (also known as Elavil) frequently/usually causes weight gain in people because it makes them sensitive to salt and they develop sodium and water retention. - In your pet dog, the effect would be even more pronounced because of your pet's smaller size compared to a person. - See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/ami.html for information about amitriptyline and weight gain.

And if your pet is prescribed steroid medication, this too causes extreme salt sensitivity, with sodium and water retention. See http://www.wildeaboutsteroids.co.uk/steroids.html for information about steroids and weight gain.

It is MOST IMPORTANT if your pet is taking any of these prescribed medications that you do not give him/her food containing salt. - Do not give leftovers from your takeaways, for example, as these are usually high is salt/sodium. - Any salt will cause increased thirst/drinking, and because of the sodium and water retention that salt and water will not get excreted and so your pet will gain weight and have less energy and will be at increased risk of developing diabetes and a multitude of other problems.

Remember obesity in dogs and cats is not caused by overeating; it is caused by fluid retention.

DO NOT FEED YOUR DOG OR CAT FOOD CONTAINING SALT! It is bad for them.

Compare "Salt Consumption connected to Obesity" with "Obesity and the Salt Connection"

Salt Consumption connected to Obesity

The Finnish researchers appear to have no scientific evidence to back their claim that “the increased intake in salt since has apparently played an important role in the increase in the consumption of soft drinks and, hence, also in the increase in energy intake." Increased salt intake certainly results in increased thirst, but sugary drinks are a poor choice to slake one's thirst, since sugar itself increases thirst. - If you want to know the facts about Obesity and the Salt Connection, read my Mensa article on the subject: Obesity and the Salt Connection
