What has the phlogiston theory to do with the belief that the only cause of becoming overweight is eating too many calories and taking too little exercise?

What has the phlogiston theory to do with the belief that the only cause of becoming overweight is eating too many calories and taking too little exercise? - Well both theories are out of date.

In the 18th century the phlogiston theory of explaining combustion and breathing held sway until the 1780s when Lavoisier discovered oxygen and explained its role in burning and rusting, etc. The calories in/calories out theory for excess weight presently held by most of the orthodox medical world is an oversimplistic explanation for the excess weight. Essentially it says that overweight people eat too many calories and take too little exercise, ie they are greedy and lazy. The glaring omission is the fact that a great deal of excess weight has nothing to do with calories at all! - That is because it is water - and there are no calories in water!

Professor Sir Richard Doll wrote in a personal letter to me in August 2001, "I was interested to hear about your experience of being overweight and losing so much weight when you reduced the amount of salt in your food. That a high salt diet combined with certain drugs (of which steroids are an example) will lead to water retention is - or ought to be - well known and, of course, the contrary follows that reducing the salt will lead to the loss of water."

There are so many prescription drugs and classes of prescription drugs, and doctors are constantly being exhorted to prescribe more and more drugs, especially antidepressants, many of which cause water retention and its attendant health problems, notably stroke, high blood pressure and heart conditions, that I would contend that the ever-increasing numbers of prescription drugs being taken must certainly be the cause of a high proportion of obese people being overweight. An additional danger is that so many prescribed drugs are addictive, especially painkillers. So I hope that the theory that the only cause of becoming overweight is eating too many calories and taking too little exercise will soon, like the phlogiston theory of combustion, be consigned to the dustbin of history, and people can be saved from all the ill-health that so many prescribed drugs cause.

HRT and water retention: my personal experience

You can read about my personal experience of HRT causing massive water retention and, consequently, morbid obesity, in my Mensa article on Obesity and the Salt Connection. Many other prescription drugs cause similar problems. - See amitriptyline and other antidepressants and prescribed steroids and other drugs. If you have these problems, you may like to consider cutting down on salt and salty food.

If your medication causes sodium retention you will gain weight and may become obese

There are many medications that cause sodium retention/fluid retention/water retention/weight gain/obesity/edema/swelling. Here are some of them: steroids and HRT, most antidepressants, antipsychotics, anti-epileptics, anticonvulsants, and more.

If you have become overweight/obese because of drug-induced sodium retention, you need to reduce your salt intake in order to lose weight. If you do not reduce your salt intake you will continue to gain weight, regardless of how many or how few calories you eat.

Cream or milk? - Which is the more fattening?

You may be surprised to learn that the answer is that CREAM is less fattening that MILK. - The reason is that cream contains less salt/sodium than milk, and also contains less sugar than milk. (The sugar in milk is called lactose.) So if you are sensitive to salt, taking cream or whole milk in your coffee will cause less water retention/weight gain/fluid retention than taking semi-skimmed milk or that ghastly thin skimmed milk (yuk!). And if you are sensitive to sugar, e.g. you have type 2 diabetes or you have metabolic syndrome, then cream in your coffee will be better for you too than semi-skimmed or skimmed milk.

I am talking about real fresh cream, of course, not dairy cream, which contains added sugar, and not artificial cream like Elmlea cream substitute. Artificial, pretend foods like Elmlea are bad for your health.

It's strange, isn't it, that lots of processed foodstuffs are described as 'light' or 'lite' when they contain less cream, when actually cream is less dense (weighs less for the same volume) than milk or water? It's the cream that actually is lighter than the less healthy, more fattening alternatives. In natural milk that has not been homogenised, the cream rises to the top, thus clearly showing that cream is the lightest part of the milk, and also making clear that the salt content is less concentrated in the cream part, because salt is one of the heavier constituents of a bottle of milk and has more of a tendency to sink further down in the liquid.

Reduce Risk of Steroid/Oestrogen/HRT-Induced Asthma by Lowering Salt Intake

Reduce Risk/Severity of Steroid/Oestrogen/HRT-Induced Asthma by Lowering Salt Intake. There is a common element here. Certain steroids, of which oestrogen is one, frequently cause weakened blood vessels/weight gain/sodium retention/water retention/sensitivity to salt, the result of which is that the veins become distended/swollen as blood volume increases, retaining extra sodium and water. Obviously this extra weight has many negative effects on health, e.g. tiredness from carrying extra weight around, increased appetite because of needing more energy to carry the extra weight and service the heavier body, greater demands on the heart and lungs and kidneys, etc.

You can reduce all of these problems by reducing your sodium intake. You will then excrete some of the excess sodium from your body, along with its accompanying water. You will lose weight swiftly and safely and you will find your breathing is easier and you will feel much better.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, osteomalacia, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, boost your lung function and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it!

Has Christmas excess left you troubled by bloating? - Try cutting down on salt and salty food.

Here are two definitions of bloating:

1. Swollen or distended beyond normal size by fluid or gaseous material.

2. Bloating is any abnormal general swelling, or increase in diameter of the abdominal area. As a symptom, the patient feels a full and tight abdomen.

Very commonly, the 'fluid material' is what I refer to as 'fluid retention', and can be thought of as salt water. When people whose blood vessels are weaker than the norm eat salt, the result is weight gain and bloating (because of excess sodium and water held in the blood vessels and elsewhere). This condition is also known as sodium retention, water retention, salt sensitivity or oedema. If these people reduce their salt intake they lose some of the excess sodium and water, and so lose weight, and if they eat plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables they lose weight faster, because the potassium in the fruit and vegetables displaces some of the excess sodium from the body.

What steps can you take to reduce the risk of your pet dog or cat getting diabetes?

What steps can you take to reduce the risk of your dog or cat getting diabetes? – Well the main one is to avoid feeding your pet with salty food. Salt/sodium is not good for your pet. So if your pet is begging for a titbit from your plate, and if what is on your plate is a meal that contains added salt, you’d best not give in to that request.

Salty food is even more harmful for dogs and cats (and rabbits) than it is for people. Salt and salty food can cause damaging fluid retention/oedema/water retention/obesity in vulnerable groups. And obesity often leads on to type 2 diabetes.

If for some reason your pet is being treated with steroids, then it is IMPERATIVE that you provide food low in salt/sodium, because most steroids cause salt sensitivity and your pet will gain even more weight and suffer even more fluid retention and feel very tired (and also very hungry because of having to carry all that extra weight/fluid around all the time).

If you want your pets to have a healthy, happy, long life, protect them from salty food. – Don’t give them part of your salt-laden takeaway! – And if you have to give them a pill, don’t wrap it in a slice of ham or hide it in a lump of cheese! – Ham and cheese are high in salt!

To lose excess weight you need to excrete more water and excrete excess fat

To lose excess weight you need to excrete excess water and excrete more fat; you do not need to 'slim' or adopt a low-fat diet or to tire yourself out with strenuous exercise.

To excrete excess water/fluid you must cut down on salt and salty food, and make sure you eat plenty of fruit and (unsalted) vegetables.

To excrete more fat you need also to eat more calcium, e.g. dairy yoghurt.

Sagging jawline? - Droopy face? - Here's how to give it a bit of a lift:

The problem is fluid retention - extra fluid in the veins. It is sometimes the result of dieting, sometimes the result of precribed medication, sometimes follows from pregnancy, sometimes results from eating salt as a child...

The excess water is held there because you are sensitive to salt. As far as possible, you need to avoid salt and salty food.

Restaurants, sandwich chains and coffee shops will soon start to display calorie counts on their menus in a misguided attempt to fight UK's obesity.

Restaurants to display calorie counts on menus to help obesity crisis
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Within the next six months many well known chains, including Pizza Hut and Pret a Manger, will start to prominently display the calorie content of all of its food.

The idea is being pushed by the Food Standards Agency, the Government's food regulator, which wants all outlets from fish and chip shops to Michelin-starred restaurants to give details of what is in their meals.

If it is a success, the FSA is considering going even further by asking restaurants to publish so-called 'traffic light' labels on their menus, which would highlight in red if a dish was too salty, sugary or fatty."

Knowledge of calorie content will not help anyone to become less obese. Providing this information will be just another colossal waste of time and money. - To lose excess weight it is helpful to know the salt/sodium content, not the calories.

Obesity is not caused by eating fat or sugar or too many calories. Nor is it caused by inactivity/laziness. It is caused by weakened veins leading to fluid retention in the bloodstream, i.e. sodium retention and water/fluid retention, and thereby to excess weight/obesity.

The way to reduce/prevent obesity is to avoid salt and salty food, and to avoid prescription drugs as far as possible because these are a major cause of the the blood vessel damage that precedes the salt sensitivity/fluid retention.

Why not help with disseminating the truth? - If you have any friends who are overweight and know from experience that dieting does not work, tell them about my blog or send them a link to my website. - Better still, tell your MP about my website. - I'm afraid my own MP is as much use as a chocolate teapot...)o:

'Slimming' - by which I mean eating less food than your body requires - can lead to many problems - and it will not make you slimmer...

Overweight/Obesity is caused by sodium retention/fluid retention/salt sensitivity, not by eating too much food. It can be easily reduced by cutting down on salt/sodium and salty food. - If you do not eat enough food you will become cold, tired and hungry, and over time your skin and your bones will become thinner and weaker, making you more vulnerable to fractures, injury and pain. You will suffer hair loss. You may develop type 2 diabetes and other chronic health problems. - But reducing calories does not reduce fluid retention, so you will not lose excess weight. - Here is some helpful information:

Baroness Peta Buscombe, chief executive of the Advertising Association, is giving junk advice about junk food...

"Junk food companies will urge people to eat healthily"
article in the Sunday Telegraph:
"A multi-million pound campaign against Britain's obesity epidemic will tomorrow be launched by the Government together with the food industry.

If only! - What a waste of money! - It seems to be the same misinformation that will continue to be spread...)o: - However many times people say that sugar-free and low-fat alternatives will reduce obesity it still isn't true! And it also isn't true that exercise helps overweight people to lose weight. - It doesn't. - Calories/fat/inactivity are not the cause/s of excess weight. - Sodium retention/fluid retention/water retention/salt sensitivity cause weight gain, overweight and obesity. - To lose excess weight, people need to be told the truth, not misinformed. - Reducing calories/fat is unnecessary and ineffective in losing excess weight. But it is easy to lose excess weight by cutting down on salt and salty food...

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph article:

"Baroness Peta Buscombe, chief executive of the Advertising Association, which will run the Business for Life strategy, said businesses were keen to take "corporate responsibility" even if some of their products were unhealthy.

She said: "The labelling on a fizzy drink could say 'Try the sugar free next time', if it's a packet of bacon it might say 'I'm a thriller in the griller', or a box of eggs might say 'Please don't fry me'. This is about giving people a nudge in the right direction, not about nannying them."

Other companies might use their budgets to promote cooking lessons or sports events, she said.

The Conservative peer said companies were keen to demonstrate that advertising could be used for a good purpose, but said it would be down to individual companies about how far they went in sending messages which could hit their profits.

"Many of these companies will have sugar-free and low-fat alternatives that they can promote but it is down to companies to decide their individual messages, as long as they are agreed by the Department of Health. It can't only be about putting positive messages on healthy foods," she said.

Government figures show obesity is responsible for 9,000 premature deaths a year in England, reducing life expectancy by an average of nine years.

The NHS cost of treating illnesses related to obesity is estimated at £4.2 billion, a figure predicted to double by 2050."

Women are buying bigger dress sizes as the nation's waistline expands.

Women's dresses are getting bigger
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Sales of sizes 18-22 have increased by a third in the past two years, according to a report.

The biggest women are in the Midlands and Lancashire, where more than 20 per cent are buying dresses larger than a size 18, but less women in the south and east are plus sizes since last year.

More young women are getting fatter as the under-25s made up five per cent of the oversize dress market, compared with three per cent last year, according to the Shape of Britain report by analysts TNS.

The average adult dress size among British women is 16. A size 18 woman typically has a 42in bust, a 34in waist and a 44in hip. Almost 25 per cent of women are obese up from 15 per cent in 1997."

British people are taking more and more drugs prescribed by their GPs.

In the past decade, prescribing by GPs has risen more than 50 per cent.
Read article in The Independent (UK)

Prescription drugs are a major factor in Britain's growing obesity problem. - Many prescription drugs, especially steroids, HRT, anti-depressants and anti-psychotics, cause sodium and water retention, i.e. fluid retention, i.e. weight gain. - This weight gain could be avoided/minimised if doctors were clued-up about the side-effects and warned patients that when taking these drugs they must avoid eating salt and salty food. - But they don't realise the warning is necessary/vitally important, and so they don't give it. - They then blame their patient/victim who gains weight, telling them that they are eating too much and/or not taking enough exercise.

GPs' reckless over-prescribing should be curbed BY LAW! - They are destroying the nation's health with this pharmaceutical overload.

Los Angeles bans new fast food outlets and California outlaws trans-fats

Los Angeles bans new fast food outlets and California outlaws trans-fats
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"On Friday night, California became the first state to prohibit the use of artery-clogging trans-fats in all its restaurants and bakeries, in legislation signed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Planners in America's second largest city have backed an unprecedented moratorium on the opening of new outlets of chains such as Burger King and KFC in South Los Angeles, in an attempt to impose better eating habits on the area's mainly black and Hispanic population.

The restriction is the most recent example of local leaders across America seeking to impose a healthier lifestyle on residents to counter soaring obesity rates.

Last week in New York, health inspectors began to fine restaurant chains that fail to display prominently the calorie counts of their offerings.

Some major fast food franchises, which are backing a legal challenge against the regulation, reluctantly began to post the often alarming calorific breakdowns just one day before the new regime of fines took effect.

In Los Angeles the full council is expected on Tuesday to approve the restrictions across a 32 square-mile area of the city, where fast-food eateries currently make up 45 per cent of restaurants.

Officials have received inquiries from other American cities which are considering adopting a similar law. But the California Restaurant Association condemned the move as "damaging, misleading, uncalled for and bad for business".

The state, often a trailblazer on nutritional issues, is also ordering the phasing-out of trans-fats, a synthetic product linked to heart disease, from its 88,000 restaurants by 2010 and other food outlets such as bakeries by 2011.

"Today we are taking a strong step towards creating a healthier future for California," said Gov Schwarzenegger. New York was the first city to ban trans-fats from its restaurants and Boston and Baltimore have voted to follow suit.

New York's calorie count initiative is also being copied. San Francisco plans to implement the same rules later this year, in the face of opposition from the restaurant industry which plans court actions to try to block the move.

Health inspectors issued 277 "violation notices" to chains with outlets that failed to display the calorie information during an initial 10-week grace period in New York. Last night officials could not yet say how many actual fines - of up to $2,000 - had been levied since last weekend.

Already the new law has led to shocking discoveries by customers, including 630-calorie muffins, 1,300-calorie salads and a 2,000-calorie "Bloomin' Onion" appetiser - only just short of the recommended government calorie intake for an American adult for a day."

Well I'm sure trans-fats are food baddies and I'm well in favour of banning them, but the widespread belief that reducing calories will reduce obesity is absolutely wrong.

To reduce obesity it is necessary to reduce salt/sodium intake, not calories. Restaurants should be required to display the salt content of the food they provide, rather than the calories.

The fattest people - the morbidly obese - are usually the victims of prescribed drugs that cause sodium and water retention. Doctors prescribe these drugs far too readily/carelessly/recklessly, often in high dose, and without the important warning that while taking them the patient should avoid eating salt of salty food.

Obesity could increase with each generation because overweight mothers give birth to offspring who have a tendency to become heavier, experts say.

Obesity will increase with each generation, medical experts warn
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"A team of scientists believe that the genetic mechanisms that control the weight of a baby may be changed if the mother is obese before and during pregnancy.

This change could lead in turn to the baby becoming heavier than normal.

Scientists in Houston, America, made the claim after studying the eating habits of several generations of mice."

This prospect could easily be avoided if people were given the correct information. - Obesity is caused by salt sensitivity/sodium retention/water retention/fluid retention and not by overeating. All the advice about reducing calories to reduce excess weight is completely false and is exacerbating both the incidence and the severity of obesity.

To reduce obesity significantly and to prevent it in children, it is necessary to avoid eating salt and salty food. So there really needs to be a ban on adding salt to processed food and bread, because these are the foods that contribute most of the salt that people eat.

The second very important preventive measure is to curb the reckless overprescribing of drugs by the medical profession, because so many of these drugs CAUSE sodium retention/fluid retention, etc and therefore their patients/victims become obese and frequently become morbidly obese needlessly. I consider it medical negligence not to warn patients that when they are taking these drugs that cause sodium retention that they will gain a lot of weight UNLESS they avoid salt/sodium and salty food while taking the medication. - The main drugs that cause weight gain in this way are steroids like prednisone and prednisolone and HRT (because of the oestrogen content), and antidepressants like amitriptyline/Elavil and other tricyclics, and antipsychotic drugs. There are many other drugs too that cause weight gain, but they usually have a smaller effect than the steroids, the tricyclics and the antipsychotics.

Doctors and other 'experts' should be forbidden by law from telling people to cut down on calories/eat less because this is harmful and does not reduce obesity at all.

Likewise exercise is good for people in many ways but it does not reduce the weight of obese people AT ALL. - It would be better for fat people to lose weight (by seriously reducing salt intake) before embarking on much exercise, because exercise is very tiring for fat people and it also tends to be hazardous for them, raising their blood pressure, etc.

Lose weight by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!
