Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes
Parents are being advised against putting ham sandwiches into children's lunchboxes in this BBC report. Other cured, salted, smoked and processed meats are also advised against. The reason given (by the World Cancer Research Fund) is that these meats increase the risk of bowel cancer in later life.
I agree with the WCRF that these meats are not good for children. Salty food, in particular, is not good for children. As well as increasing the risk of bowel cancer (and most other cancers too) it is the cause of child obesity. Unfortunately the Food Standards Agency says it is OK to give children cured, salted, smoked and processed meats occasionally. - Well it's not OK - not if you want your children to be as healthy as possible, and also to avoid becoming overweight.
Salt, of course, could properly be regarded as a carcinogen.

New report on cancer but it still avoids telling the whole truth about obesity and cancer.
Thousands of cancer cases caused by diet, alcohol and obesity, experts warn
article in the Telegraph
Extract:
"Cancer is not 'an act of God' in most cases and individuals can take action to dramatically reduce their chances of developing the disease, worldwide experts said.
After smoking, obesity, diet and physical activity are major causes of cancer and 39 per cent of the top 12 cancers in the UK could be prevented, the World Cancer Research Fund report said.
This equates to around 79,000 cases that could be prevented each year in the UK out of a total of around 289,000 new cases diagnosed each year.
If nothing is done to reduce cancer rates then 'this tide will engulf us', Prof Sir Michael Marmot, chairman of the expert panel said."
The experts are still not telling the truth about obesity and cancer. The main reason that both of these and many other related illnesses are on the increase is the misinformation about the causes of obesity and how to reduce/prevent it.
All that is necessary to curb the growing incidence of obesity is to tell the truth about what causes it! - Obesity is NOT caused by overeating. It is caused by fluid retention, frequently because of taking prescribed medications, especially steroids such as prednisolone, prednisone and HRT, and anti-depressants such as amitriptyline. (When doctors prescribe drugs that cause sodium retention and water retention they should warn the patient not to eat salt, or food containing salt, while taking the medication. When they do not give this warning, the inevitable consequence is considerable weight gain.)
Obesity can be easily reduced by seriously reducing your salt/sodium intake and eating plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables. - It is important not to restrict calories. - 'Slimming' or 'dieting' is unnecessary, ineffective and often harmful.
Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! High levels of 'hidden' salt in soup can increase the risk of cancer, experts have warned.
High levels of hidden salt in soup 'can increase the risk of cancer'
article in the Telegraph
Extract:
"People who regularly sit down to a warming bowl of soup could inadvertently be doing themselves long-term damage, according to Dr Rachel Thompson, science programme manager for the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF).
She warned that servings of some well-known brands contained half the recommended daily limit of salt intake.
Rather than a healthy comforting meal, soup was one of the "worst offenders" for high levels of hidden salt in food, she added.
Doctors have long warned that salt can increase the body's blood pressure and contribute to a stroke or a heart attack.
But recent research has suggested that too much salt could also be a factor in the development of stomach cancer."

Breastfeeding 'cuts mother's cancer risk' - and the risk of her baby becoming overweight/obese.
Breastfeeding 'cuts mother's cancer risk'
Extract from the Telegraph:
"Mothers should breastfeed for six months after giving birth to cut their risk of developing breast cancer, researchers have advised.
The advice follows a World Cancer Research Fund survey that shows three out of four women are unaware of the link.
Two thirds are unaware that being breastfed cuts a child's risk of being overweight - a major risk factor for cancer.
And just 13 per cent of men are aware it could cut a mother's risk of developing breast cancer."
You can reduce your risk of developing cancer by avoiding salt and salty food.

Ban salt pot from table, says cancer expert, Martin Wiseman, a medical and scientific advisor for the World Cancer Research Fund.
Ban salt pot from table, says cancer expert
Extract from the Telegraph:
"Prof Wiseman said: "Because salt is added by food manufacturers, there is too much of it in our food before it even reaches our dinner table. By adding extra salt to a meal, you are only making things worse."
Salt is linked to higher blood pressure, which increases the risk of strokes, heart disease and stomach cancer.
Reducing salt intakes could save 23,450 lives a year in Britain."

Dr Andrew Wadge, the Food Standards Agency (FSA)'s chief scientist, says he likes a bacon sandwich, 'in moderation'. - His reasoning is flawed.
FSA scientist comes to aid of the bacon buttie
Extract from Telegraph article:
"A report by the World Cancer Research Fund (WCRF) last week triggered a furore when it said the evidence was strong enough for it to recommend people stop eating any processed meats.
But Dr Andrew Wadge, the Food Standards Agency (FSA)'s chief scientist, has said the report's stark and "surprising" message not to eat bacon sandwiches could alienate consumers. Dr Wadge bolstered his assertion by admitting that he was partial to the odd bacon sandwich and added that they should remain part of a balanced diet. "I do like a bacon sandwich, in moderation," he said."
And since all overweight or obese people are sensitive to salt/suffering from fluid retention, even one bacon sandwich could cause an obese person, especially an obese child, a lot of harm, since bacon is laden with salt/sodium and the bread used in making the sandwich is also high in salt.
Overweight people would be well advised to avoid salt and salty food like bacon as much as they possibly can.- People who are not sensitive to salt, i.e. slim people, are fortunate enough to be as 'moderate' - or indeed liberal - as they like, since it makes little difference to them.
Lose weight and improve your health in many ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Obesity is the 'main cause of cancer in non-smokers'. - Readers of my website will have known this for years...
Obesity 'main cause of cancer in non-smokers'
Extracts from the report in the Telegraph:
"Obesity has become the main cause of cancer in non-smokers, a global conference will hear next week.
The World Cancer Research Fund has spent five years collecting information about the effect bodyweight, diet and physical activity has on the risk of developing cancer and will present its findings on Thursday.
Smoking is still the single biggest cause of cancers, accounting for one third of the 300,000 cases in the UK each year.
But only one quarter of people smoke and research has found that for non-smokers being overweight or obese is the most important avoidable cause of cancer. In the UK, 12,000 people a year could avoid cancer if they maintained a healthy weight, according to Cancer Research UK.
Obesity is known to cause between nine and 15 per cent of breast cancers – more than defective genes.
A recent study found women who have gone through the menopause and are obese increase their risk of developing breast cancer by a third."
"Obesity is also known to increase the risk of bowel cancer, and accounts for between 11 per cent and 14 per cent of cases annually. Men who are obese have a 60 per cent increased risk of developing the disease.
Studies have also estimated that a quarter of kidney cancers, a third of oesophageal cancers and four in 10 womb cancers are caused by obesity.
There is evidence that obesity is linked to nine other rarer cancers.
Prof Tim Key, an epidemiologist at Cancer Research UK who is presenting at the conference in London next week, said: "Already the majority of people don't smoke and for them obesity maybe the most important identified cause of cancer."
He said eating a balanced diet was important to remain a healthy weight but there was little credible evidence that so-called superfoods such as garlic, broccoli, or berries actually prevented cancer."
My lip tends to curl when people advocate 'a balanced diet'. - Meaningless verbiage, in my opinion. - To avoid or to reduce obesity, the paramount advice should be to avoid eating salt and salty food, avoid dieting, eat good meals with plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables, AND ABOVE ALL, AVOID PRESCRIBED MEDICATION UNLESS IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT YOU TAKE IT. - SO MANY PRESCRIPTION DRUGS CAUSE FLUID RETENTION AND THEREFORE CAUSE OVERWEIGHT AND OBESITY.Lose weight and improve your health in many ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Soaring obesity rates have lumbered Britain with a "cancer time bomb", warns an expert.
Britain's obesity epidemic has created 'cancer time bomb' - Independent
Extract:
"Soaring obesity rates have lumbered Britain with a "cancer time bomb" which, combined with an ageing population, will cause a massive increase in cases unless urgent action is taken, an expert has warned.
Research has shown up to 40 per cent of cancers, particularly hormone-sensitive types such as breast and endometrial cancer (affecting the womb lining), can be prevented by adopting a healthy diet and taking regular exercise, said Dr Greg Martin, science and research manager at the World Cancer Research Fund. Obesity was also associated with cancer of the oesophagus and bowel, said Dr Martin.
"There has been plenty of attention recently on the problems of obesity, but a lot of people still do not realise how closely obesity is linked to cancer," he said. "People getting fatter will lead to an increase in the number of cancer cases as surely as night follows day.
Dr Martin, who was speaking at the start of his charity's Cancer Prevention Week, added: "You also have to add into the mix that cancer is largely an older person's disease, and the UK has an ageing population. So if you have an ageing population that is getting more obese, there could be really serious consequences in terms of the number of people getting cancer if people do not act now. It's a cancer time bomb."
Although the biological mechanics connecting obesity and cancer were far from clear, he said, adipose tissue, which makes up the rolls of fat that form around the belly, was not inert but produced oestrogen. The hormone is known to fuel certain cancers. For people with oesophagus cancer, which is especially deadly, obesity may increase acid reflux which in turn raises the risk of cancer."
It is correct that there is a connection between obesity and several cancers, and it is correct that this is not widely realised. - What is even less widely realised though, even by this expert, Dr Martin, is that obesity is caused by fluid retention and that this can be lessened by reducing sodium intake and increasing potassium intake, which means, in practical terms, eating less salt and salty food, and eating more fruit and fresh vegetables. Exercise does not help to reduce obesity, nor does portion control.
Lose weight (and reduce your risk of developing cancer) by eating less salt! Go on! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!
