Women in Yorkshire seeking IVF treatment on the NHS have been told they only qualify if they are between 39.5 and 40-years of age

The Telegraph reports that health service managers in Yorkshire have introduced restrictions such that "Women seeking IVF treatment on the NHS have been told they only qualify if they are between 39.5 and 40 years of age." - Surely they can't be serious!

Here is a bit of information that may help some infertile women who are reading this. - If you are infertile because of being overweight or obese, then an easy, safe, sure way to lose some excess weight and improve your fertility is to avoid eating salt and salty food.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, stroke, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better! Women who choose fertility treatment after one year of trying for a baby naturally may do more harm than good, a leading fertility expert has warned.

Fertility expert warns 'don't rush into treatment'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Many young women would be better off improving fertility through simpler means such as cutting stress levels and losing weight, according to Dr Geeta Nargund.

Research shows those who opt for IVF after 12 months are only slightly more likely to conceive than those who let nature take its course. They are also more likely to have twins or triplets, raising the overall health risk.

Dr Nargund, head of reproductive medicine at St George's Hospital in Tooting, South London, told the Daily Mail: "We must offer lifestyle advice, early tests and simple approaches to promote natural conception. If a woman is younger and has no serious medical causes of infertility, she should consider improving her fertility naturally.

"IVF is safe but what we are saying is you don't want unnecessary medical treatment far too early.""

Overweight/obese women can improve their fertility by cutting down on salt and salty food - because this reduces the fluid retention which is the cause of excess weight.

Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, heart attack, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs, hunger or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Common chemicals found in clothing, non-stick frying pans and food packaging can substantially reduce women's fertility, a new study has found.

Common chemicals found in non-stick frying pans 'can harm fertility'
article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are used to make products like Teflon, as well as waterproof clothing, pesticides and upholstery.

Studies have also shown that they have leached in small quantities into the water supply, in part because they are contained in foam used by firefighters.

A new study found that exposure to high levels of the chemicals, which can remain in the environment and the body for decades, could leave women struggling to get pregnant.

Women with high levels of PFCs in their blood were up to one and a half times more likely to have taken more than a year to conceive or required fertility treatment than those with low levels.

The study, published in the journal Human Reproduction, warns that the levels of exposure to the chemicals necessary to reduce fertility "are common in developed countries".

Researchers looked at the levels of two of the chemicals, called perfluorooctanoate (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), in the bloodstreams of 1,240 women in Denmark who became pregnant between 1996 and 2002."

Women can improve their fertility by avoiding salt and salty food.

Common fertility treatments given to thousands of couples do nothing to boost their chances of getting pregnant, according to a recent study.

Common fertility treatments 'do not aid conception'
Article in the Telegraph

Extract:

"Giving couples a popular fertility drug or a common form of insemination are no more effective than encouraging them to 'keep trying', researchers said.

Both treatments are officially recommended as one of the first courses of action for couples having trouble conceiving.

They are designed to improve fertility rates either by stimulating egg production in the ovaries or by injecting sperm directly into the womb.

But the study suggests that both have little or no effect on conception rates.

More than 21,000 couples a year receive the drug, called Clomifene citrate, which has cost the NHS around £1 million over the last five years.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, which regulates fertility treatment in Britain, does not collect information on how many couples receive unstimulated intrauterine insemination (IUI) but experts believe there are thousands of the treatments carried out every year, at a cost of around £300 per cycle."

Sounds as though it would be a good idea to discontinue these treatments. -This would save raising false hopes, save people's time, save money...

A drug-free, cost-free way to improve fertility is to avoid salt and salty food. This also benefits health in many ways.

Invisible man-made chemicals are being linked to increasing infertility

Infertility: handle with care

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Roughly one third of infertility remains 'unexplained', a third is female-related - apart from the fact that women are trying for children later, sexually transmitted infections and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are on the rise - and the rest is male-related. Studies across Europe have recorded an alarming drop in sperm counts and a study not yet released has found the same here in Britain. 'Something has changed in the past 20 or 30 years,' says Allan Pacey, the secretary of the British Fertility Society. 'We don't know what it is, but we need to be very concerned.'

Many modern-day habits are known to play a part - drinking, smoking and overeating for example. What we don't know is whether there's something else going on - in the air we breathe, water we drink and food we eat. The thousands of invisible chemicals that have poured into our world since the Second World War to make life non-breakable, non-stick and flame-resistant are being linked to miscarriage, PCOS, endometriosis, and low sperm counts - as well as testicular cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer.

Shanna Swan, an epidemiologist at the University of Rochester School of Medicine & Dentistry in America, has spent the past 20 years studying environmental reproductive risks. 'There's no question now that chemical exposures impair fertility,' she says. 'We have 80,000 chemicals in circulation and when we look we see strong evidence that comes out constantly in scientific journals and in small conferences. Yet somehow we haven't reached the tipping point where people take notice. With global warming, it took 20 years. The American surgeon general said in 1964 that cigarettes caused cancer. How long did that take to get around? Maybe it takes a disaster - and I think impairing our ability to reproduce is potentially the most serious disaster there is.'

Two highly ubiquitous chemicals, phthalates (the 'ph' is silent) and bisphenol A, are the cause of most concern. Both chemicals are everywhere - tin cans, baby bottles, water bottles, CDs, plastic toys, the list is endless - and because of their 'leachy' nature (they're not very good at binding to their products) they are in us, too. In a study by Shanna Swan of mothers and babies, all the babies had measurable phthalate levels - and those exposed to the most baby-care products had the highest. Often described as 'endocrine disrupters', phthalates mimic the female hormone oestrogen, so could play havoc with hormones and reproductive systems - particularly in men.

'There's good evidence that sperm counts are falling and that something environmental is going on,' confirms Pacey. Male infertility is now the reason for half of British couples having IVF. While our grandfathers probably had a sperm count of about 120 million in one millilitre of seminal fluid, the average male sperm count now stands at about 60 million. (Anything less than 25/30 million is classified as infertile.) At the same time testicular cancer, which is linked to low sperm counts, is rising fast."

If obesity is the cause of your infertility then avoiding salt and salty food would help you. -Lose weight, reduce your risk of most cancers, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, heart disease, vascular dementia, osteopenia, osteoporosis, hypercholesterolaemia, depression, liver and kidney problems, and improve your health in many other ways without drugs or expense by eating less salt! - Try it! - You will feel so much better!

Women should have just one embryo implanted during fertility treatment to cut the chance of them having more risky twin births, experts warn.

One embryo at a time 'makes IVF less risky'

Extract from the Telegraph:

"Women should have just one embryo implanted during fertility treatment to cut the chance of them having more risky twin births, experts warn.

The call to cut the number of multiple pregnancies created through IVF came as a British study showed that an emerging technique can achieve the same success rate with just one embryo as two.

Most women receiving IVF treatment are implanted with two or more embryos at one time, to maximise their chances of becoming pregnant.

The practice has led to a boom in multiple births - twins now make up one in four IVF births, compared to just one in 80 of those naturally conceived.

But twins or triplets are more likely to die before or during birth, or have profound disabilities such as cerebral palsy.

Scientists estimate 126 fewer babies would die every year if all IVF children were single births.

Dr Gillian Lockwood, of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists's ethics committee, said some IVF patients should be given one embryo to limit the number of multiple births.

"Multiple pregnancies do not give you two for the price of one," she said, "they carry with them significant risks and dangers."

Dr Lockwood, who is also medical director at Midland Fertility Services, near Birmingham, said the lifetime costs of treating cerebral palsy can run into millions, money which she said could be spent on extra courses of IVF.

But the college warned that patients would continue to ignore the dangers posed by multiple pregnancies while they were offered just one course of IVF on the NHS.

A new study, published in the BJOG journal, shows that a technique which uses just one embryo has a better success rate in many patients than traditional IVF."

If you are infertile because you are overweight/obese, you can greatly improve your situation by avoiding eating salt and salty food. This reduces fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity.

To lose weight obese people need to give up dieting and just avoid eating salt and salty food.

Embryos get destroyed by fertility clinics' mistakes

Embryos destroyed by fumbling clinics

Extract from the Sunday Telegraph:

"Hundreds of accidents at fertility clinics have led to couples' precious embryos being lost, damaged or destroyed, the Government has admitted.

More than 500 "adverse incidents" have been recorded by clinics since 2003, with a sharp rise in the number of errors reported last year.

Errors typically involved the loss of embryos, eggs or sperm through staff dropping dishes, tripping when holding them or accidentally throwing them away.

Failures of equipment also compromised the survival of embryos, including power failures affecting vital electrical equipment."

Obese women can increase their fertility by avoiding salt and salty food. - Reducing sodium intake reduces fluid retention, thus reducing obesity, which is a major cause of infertility.

British IVF doctors will be told to avoid multiple births

From the Telegraph - IVF doctors told to avoid multiple births

Extract:

"A cap will be set on the number of twins and triplets fertility clinics are allowed to produce in an attempt to reduce risky multiple pregnancies, The Daily Telegraph has learned.

The Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority will publish on Monday the conclusions of its consultation on how to reduce the number of multiple pregnancies, which pose an increased risk to the mother and babies.

The HFEA is understood to be backing away from the introduction of immediate guidelines on which women should have only one embryo implanted at a time and instead favours plans to allow clinics to set out their own measures to reduce multiple pregnancies."

If a woman is infertile because of being overweight/obese she can easily and safely reduce her excess weight by avoiding eating salt and salty food, so may like to try this before embarking on possibly risky interventions.

First UK births using new fertility treatment that does not require women to take potentially dangerous hormone drugs.

First UK births using revolutionary procedure

Extract from Telegraph report:

"Twins have become the first babies born in Britain using a revolutionary new fertility treatment that does not require women to take potentially dangerous hormone drugs.

The boy and girl were born a week ago after they were conceived through vitro maturation (IVM) - a technique which is quicker, safer and cheaper than traditional IVF.

The twin babies, whose parents have requested that their identities not be released, were born a minute apart at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. Both are said to be healthy.

The boy, who was born first, weighed 6lb 11oz, while his sister weighed 5lb 14oz.

Although the new technique currently has lower success rates than IVF, doctors believe it could one day become the standard treatment for infertility.

The twins are the first babies born in the UK using the technique, however about 400 IVM babies have been born worldwide.

The Oxford Fertility Unit, the private clinic which announced the twins' birth, became the first clinic in the UK licensed to carry out the procedure earlier this year.

Mr Tim Child, a reproductive medicine researcher at Oxford University and a consultant gynaecologist at the Oxford Fertility Unit, said: "I'm absolutely delighted for the couple."

If you are infertile because of obesity, you can reduce your weight safely, and thereby increase your fertility, by minimising your intake of salt/sodium.

Infertility crisis looms in the west as obesity levels soar. - SO AVOID EATING SALT AND SALTY FOOD!

Infertility crisis looms in the west as obesity levels soar - Guardian

Extract:

"Soaring levels of obesity in the western world are expected to trigger a major new infertility crisis among women, doctors warn today. The Lancet reports that the obesity epidemic will leave more couples struggling to conceive as women suffer more fertility-related problems.

One expert suggested the proportion of couples seeking infertility treatment could double to one in five within a decade. "We're at the tip of the iceberg," said Bill Ledger, professor of obstetrics at the University of Sheffield. But he said the problem could be eased if women lost weight before resorting to medical interventions to get pregnant.

The Lancet study focuses on a common disorder - polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) - which affects one in 15 women worldwide. PCOS occurs when women have excess male hormones which cause little cysts to grow on the ovaries. Symptoms include irregular or missed periods, infertility, excess hair, acne and insulin resistance which can make them more prone to diabetes.

"Obesity has a substantial effect on the manifestation of polycystic ovary syndrome," the paper says. "Excess weight exacerbates metabolic and reproductive abnormalities in women with the syndrome, and family studies suggest weight gain might promote ... polycystic ovary syndrome in a susceptible population."

Robert Norman, the lead author at the University of Adelaide, Australia, said: "Obesity doesn't cause PCOS but it exacerbates it ... it's argued that obesity will cause a crisis in infertility and I agree.

"Obesity has huge consequences for fertility but also when you treat someone who is obese and get them pregnant you have increased problems for the pregnancy." Problems include pregnancy-related diabetes, abnormalities and a decreased chance of a natural labour."

Thousands of couples are being denied NHS fertility treatment despite pledges made

Thousands denied fertility treatment as half of England's health authorities fail to honour pledge - Guardian

Extract:

"Thousands of couples are being denied NHS fertility treatment despite a government pledge of a full IVF cycle for those eligible by April 2005, a Department of Health survey has found.

The survey, the first monitoring by officials of how local NHS provision measures up to national guidelines, reveals that more than half of England's health authorities fail to provide the most basic treatment of a full IVF cycle, including freezing and replacement of embryos not transferred in the initial cycle.

Many women and their partners who fulfil strict criteria for a free IVF cycle are being denied it altogether, while others are receiving partial treatment which falls short of guidelines set up to standardise provision.

A recent all-party parliamentary report found that at local level the NHS regarded treatment of infertile couples as a low priority, with trusts "reluctantly funding the barest minimum" of treatment, if at all. Primary care trusts have refused treatment to smokers, to those considered too fat or thin, and to couples who have had sterilisation procedures.

The guidelines, issued in February 2004 by the National Institute for Clinical Excellence (Nice), advise that eligible couples should be offered up to three cycles of IVF if the woman is between 23 and 39 years old. The measures were welcomed by John Reid, the then health secretary, who promised "at least one full cycle" to those eligible by the next year, with the NHS to work towards full implementation of three free cycles.

But the survey, by Infertility Network UK on behalf of the Department of Health, revealed an "enormous variation" in the social criteria set by trusts, with the female age range differing from the guidelines. It led to a situation where a 36-year-old woman in Wiltshire was told she was too old to have the treatment, while a 28-year-old in the Thames Valley heard she had to wait eight years for treatment because only those aged 36 to 39 were eligible."

Being overweight or obese often reduces a woman's fertility and also often reduces her chance of being offered fertility treatment. - The safest, fastest and most reliable way to reduce excess weight is to avoid eating salt and salty food. This benefits your health in many other ways too.

A bowl of tomato soup every day can help boost fertility among men, scientists claim

Bowl of tomato soup a day 'boosts fertility' - Telegraph

Extract:

"A bowl of tomato soup every day can help boost fertility among men, scientists claimed yesterday.

They have discovered that lycopene, which gives tomatoes their bright red colouring, can turn sperm into super-sperm.

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth studied the effect of lycopene in the diet on a random group of six healthy men, with an average age of 42. The men were asked to consume a 400g tin of Heinz cream of tomato soup every day for two weeks.

The researchers, from the university's biomedical science department, said that during the two weeks, levels of lycopene in the men's semen rose between seven and 12 per cent, which was "significant".

They added that further studies should be carried out to discover whether the same boost would be seen in infertile men.

The results, published in the British Journal of Urology, said that infertile men have lower levels of lycopene in their sperm. The study suggests that higher levels of lycopene are associated with increased fertility."

Women whose fertility is low because of being overweight, can easily and safely lose weight by cutting down on salt (sodium) and salty food and therefore boost their fertility and improve their health at the same time.

I must say Heinz cream of tomato soup is absolutely delicious. - I'd love to eat it myself, but as it contains salt I have to avoid it because I am a steroid victim and therefore extremely sensitive to salt.

Alternative IVF procedures: pros and cons

Taking on the baby gods - Guardian

IVF is expensive and harrowing, and carries significant health risks. That is why some fertility experts are turning to an alternative method called 'mild IVF', which they say is cheaper, safer and equally effective. But Britain's most powerful fertility doctors remain to be convinced. Sarah Boseley reports...

It is quite a long article.

If the infertility is caused by the woman being obese, then it is worth cutting down on salt and salty food because this reduces fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity.

A protein has been discovered which it may be possible eventually to use in medication to prolong the life of a woman's eggs.

Fertility pill that could delay menopause - Telegraph

Extract:

"Professor Robert Winston, of Imperial College in London, told a conference that researchers had found a protein which they believe could be developed into a pill or an injection to prolong the life of women's eggs.

Last week it was disclosed that the number of women aged 40 and over having fertility treatment had increased ten-fold in the past 15 years."

Obesity can make a woman less fertile. If you have this problem you may like to try cutting down on salt and salty food because this is a completely safe way to reduce obesity. - Eating less salt/sodium reduces the fluid retention which is the cause of obesity. Eating plenty of fruit and fresh vegetables makes the weight loss faster. A really obese woman who follows this advice will EASILY lose about a stone (14 pounds) in a month, and will continue to lose weight as long as the advice continues to be taken. Obese people are sensitive to salt, and so for them salt is harmful - much more harmful than it is for people who are not obese or overweight.

IT IS IMPORTANT NOT TO DIET OR COUNT CALORIES OR GO HUNGRY!

And it is not necessary to do exercises to lose weight.

High Demand for IVF

Women over 40 lead surge in demand for IVF - Independent

Extract:

"The fortysomethings are the fastest-growing group of patients seeking IVF, up from less than 1,000 in 1991 to more than 6,000 in 2006.

Demand for IVF has soared for all age groups in the past decade, with almost 40,000 cycles of treatment provided in 2006. Forty-plus women have led the surge, rising from 10 per cent of all cycles in 2000 to more than 15 per cent in 2006.

Experts said the trend was a consequence of the social pressures on women to delay starting a family while establishing their careers and growing awareness of the potential of fertility treatment. But they warned that many older women faced having their hopes dashed as success rates for IVF declined sharply with advancing years.

The figures also reveal rising demand from single and lesbian women. Cycles of treatment provided to single women increased from 600 in 1999 to more than 1,200 in 2006. The number of treatment cycles for lesbian couples rose from 300 to almost 1,000 in the same period.

Medical advances and improvements in technique have seen success rates for treatment increase dramatically. The overall live birth rate has risenfrom 14 per cent per cycle of treatment in 1991, to 21 per cent in 2006. The success rates are even higher for women under the age of 35 with more than one in four becoming pregnant at the first attempt. But the rates fall sharply after women pass the age of 35, declining to 12 per cent at age 40.

Moreover, the over-40s have not seen the improvement in live birth rates experienced by younger women. Success rates have improved only slightly over the past 15 years as doctors have run up against the barrier of female biological clock. After the age of 43, more than 95 per cent of patients treated return home childless."

Obesity reduces fertility. If that is your problem, here is the safe easy, rapid way to reduce your excess weight: avoid eating salt and salty food, and step up your intake of fruit and fresh vegetables. This will result in your fluid retention (excess water) being lessened and you will excrete excess water and so lose weight.

Lord Winston, the fertility expert, has said that IVF clinics are exploiting women who are desperate for a baby.

Fertility expert says IVF clinics exploit women - Telegraph

Extract:

"Lord Winston, the fertility expert, has said that IVF clinics are exploiting women who are desperate for a baby.

Robert Winston, professor of fertility studies at Imperial College London, has said couples are being charged over the odds and the fertility watchdog is doing too little to protect them.

"One of the major problems facing us in healthcare is that IVF has become a massive commercial industry," he said.

"It’s very easy to exploit people by the fact that they’re desperate and you’ve got the technology which they want, which may not work."

Lord Winston is one of the world’s most respected medical academics and researcher of the human reproductive system. But he is perhaps best known as the presenter of the Human Body and Super Human television series.

He said: "Amazing sums of money are being made through IVF.

"It is really rather depressing to consider that some IVF treatments in London are charged at ten times the fee that is charged in Melbourne, where there is excellent medicine, where IVF is just as successful, where they have comparable salaries - money is corrupting this whole technology."

Lord Winston, who was speaking at the Hay Literary Festival in mid-Wales, said: "Hundreds of women are being exploited out of their desperation to get pregnant from people who are taking large sums of money from them in private clinics."

"The regulatory authority has done a consistently bad job," he said of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority. "It’s not prevented the exploitation of women." "

Obesity reduces fertility. Cutting down on salt/sodium reduces obesity, so women can boost their fertility by eating less salt.

An aspirin a day can prevent bowel cancer but is only worth taking by those at high risk, research shows.

Aspirin found to cut bowel cancer - Independent

Extracts:

"An aspirin a day can prevent bowel cancer but is only worth taking by those at high risk, research shows.

People who took at least 300 mgs of aspirin a day for at least five years cut their overall risk of the cancer by more than a third. The effect was even more dramatic in the first 10 to 15 years after treatment started, with a 74 per cent reduction in the risk."

"However, the painkiller can cause gastro-intestinal bleeding. The authors said that, given these risks, its use to prevent bowel cancer could only be recommended for people at high risk.

In the past 30 years, aspirin has been proven effective against heart disease, three types of cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, stroke, infertility and deep vein thrombosis. Thousands of research papers each year confirm it as a wonder drug. "

You can reduce your risk of ALL of those illnesses cited above: heart disease, most cancers, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, stroke, osteoporosis, infertility and deep vein thrombosis and many other illnesses too, including obesity and high blood pressure, by simply reducing your intake of salt/sodium - better still, by cutting out all avoidable salt from what you eat. - Unlike taking aspirin daily, if you reduce your salt intake there are no adverse side-effects whatsoever.

British doctors favour ending fertility treatment funded by the NHS.

End fertility treatment on the NHS, say doctors - Telegraph

Extract:

"Three quarters of British doctors say they do not believe that couples should be able to get free fertility treatment on the NHS, according to research published today.

A survey of more than 1,000 GPs and hospital doctors showed that 70 per cent said that the NHS should not pay for every type of operation but there was no consensus on what the NHS should fund. "

I believe that most members of the public are also of the opinion that the NHS should not be paying for fertility treatments. They would rather NHS money be spent on treating people who are ill, not people who are infertile, even if some doctors try to re-define infertility as an illness, which, patently, it is not.

Most women can improve their fertility by reducing their salt intake. - This is because reducing salt intake reduces any fluid retention, which is the cause of obesity, and there is a positive correlation between obesity and infertility.

Ice cream can help women get pregnant

Ice cream can help women get pregnant

Extract:

"Eating ice cream and drinking full-fat milk can significantly improve women's chances of getting pregnant, scientists say.

US researchers found that women who consumed a lot of low-fat dairy products such as skimmed milk were almost twice as likely to suffer period-related fertility problems as those who did not.

Around a quarter of women who have difficulties becoming pregnant have ovulatory disorders. The main symptoms are stopping having periods or irregular periods.

The research found that in comparison to those who ate ice cream less than once a week, participants who did so at least twice a week were almost 40 per cent less likely to fail to become pregnant because of period-related infertility."

Well, I'm all in favour of dissuading people to avoid skimmed milk, which is an abomination...)o: but I doubt that eating more ice cream is meaningful advice to give to women experiencing fertility problems. - Obesity is a significant factor in infertility and obesity is caused by sodium retention and the fluid retention it causes. The best, safest and most reliable way to reduce fluid retention and obesity is to minimise salt intake; it follows then that infertile women should be advised to eat less salt. This would be far more effective, and also good for the health of any baby that might then be conceived, than the ice cream gimmick!
