Delia Smith's recipes 'have too much salt'
Extract from the Telegraph:
"A number of Delia Smith's recipes in her How to Cheat at Cooking series contain more salt than the recommended daily intake, food campaigners warn today.
Government guidelines suggest that adults should include no more than 6g of salt in their diet each day.
But some of Miss Smith's latest recipes exceed the limit in one dish, even before any salt is added for seasoning, according to research by Consensus Action on Salt and Health (Cash).
It looked at a range of starters and main courses from her television series, which is aimed at helping people with little time or cooking ability and recommends short cuts such as using frozen mashed potato. Some of the ready-made foods she advocates are already high in salt."
I saw the end of Delia's ghastly programme today as I awaited the programme I had switched on to watch. I was immediately repelled by the lemongrass ingredient that was stored in BRINE - a high salt liquid. - And I noticed that no-one actually ate the appalling concoction she had made - sirloin steak ruined by an appalling high-salt concoction described as a marinade, dunked in some other ghastly stuff and then wrapped in iceberg lettuce...)o: - This brought to mind one of her programmes years ago in which she had advised not to wash lettuce!!! (so that it didn't go limp or something). - I resolved at that time never to eat anything Delia had cooked or assembled, 'cos I wouldn't want to risk food poisoning...)o:

'Artificial colourings as harmful as leaded petrol for children'
'Artificial colourings as harmful as leaded petrol for children'
Extracts from the Telegraph:
"Artificial colourings could be removed from hundreds of food products after researchers found that they may be almost as harmful to children's development as leaded petrol.
The additives, found in a host of sweets and soft drinks, have been linked to behavioural problems. But a team at Southampton University, carrying out a £750,000 study for the Food Standards Agency, (FSA) suggested seven colourings, including tartrazine and sunset yellow, could also affect children's intelligence by up to five IQ points.
The board of the FSA, the industry's governing body, will meet on Thursday to consider recommendations from its officials that manufacturers should voluntarily remove six of the E numbers from their products while further research is carried out on the seventh, sodium benzoate. They would be urged to use natural replacements.
The Southampton study was published in September but the FSA ignored calls for swift action after the Committee on Toxicology said additives had only a moderate effect on some children.
Claims that the colourings were virtually as damaging as lead emerged when the leader of the research, Professor Jim Stevenson, wrote to the FSA demanding immediate action.""The additives linked to hyperactive behaviour are:
• Tartrazine (E102): Yellow food colouring found in mushy peas and candy floss, banned from all foods and drinks for under-threes.
• Quinoline yellow (E104): Food colouring found in squash, flu capsules
• Sunset yellow (E110): Orange yellow colouring found in bubble gum and jelly babies.
• Carmoisine (E122): Red food colouring found in throat lozenges
• Ponceau 4R (E124): Red food colouring found in pear drops and bombay mix
• Allura red (E129): Red food colouring found in fruit jelly sweets and lollipops.
• Sodium benzoate (E211): Artificial preservative found in squash, fizzy drinks and cough syrup"

A reminder that pharmaceutical drugs kill many thousands of Britons every year because of side effects.
I've been warning for years about the catastrophic effects of drugs recklessly prescribed by ignorant doctors who do not notice or monitor outcomes.
Extract from an article in the Independent last year: (http://news.independent.co.uk/health/article3081840.ece)
"Thousands of patients are dying each year as a result of side effects from pills prescribed by GPs and hospital doctors.
And while the number of deaths from suspected adverse reactions to prescription drugs has more than doubled in the past 10 years to 973 last year, medical experts warn that as few as one in 10 deaths and other serious complications are being reported.
Doctors' poor prescribing skills and repeated failures to recognise accurately adverse drug reactions in patients have seen deaths multiply by about two and half times since 1996.
Experts are calling for a revamp of the current warning systems designed to alert doctors to potentially lethal prescription drug treatments.
They believe tens of thousands of patients suffer life-threatening, disabling or other serious reactions that need hospital treatment because of a failure to spot and report many dangerous side effects and drug interactions quickly enough.
One study estimated that the equivalent of all the beds from seven general hospitals – 5,600 places – are occupied with patients suffering from drug reactions at any one time, costing the NHS more than £450m each year. Researchers believe around 70 per cent of adverse reactions could be avoided through better training, computerised prescribing systems and staff spending more time talking and listening to patients."
If you read the whole article, you will notice the efforts being made to absolve our overpaid doctors of their appalling guilt in the matter of negligent prescribing. - But the best way to remedy matters is to label this harmful prescribing for what it is - criminal negligence - and have some of these dangerous doctors in court to face criminal charges. That would stop the terrible harm being done to their innocent patients/victims. -
Power without responsibility and without sanction is always a recipe for disaster.

FDA issues alert about HIV drug Prezista
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has issued an alert concerning reports of liver injury in patients taking Prezista. The FDA said Prezista (darunavir), an anti-retroviral drug used to treat for the human immunodeficiency virus HIV, is suspected of contributing to several hepatic events, including liver failure, destruction of liver tissue, cirrhosis, hepatitis and jaundice.

GlaxoSmithKline and one of its key executives are facing possible manslaughter charges re. side-effects of an anti-Hepatitis "B" vaccine
US VACCINE MAKER TARGET OF HOMOCIDE INVESTIGATION
In a criminal case guaranteed to send shockwaves throughout the international pharmaceutical industry, French authorities are targeting a US-based drug company and its executives in a homicide investigation. The multi-billion dollar corporation GlaxoSmithKline and one of its key executives are facing possible manslaughter charges stemming from allegations that the company failed to fully disclose side effects from an anti-Hepatitis "B" vaccine distributed between 1994 and 1998. Also being investigated is the French-based drug company Sanofi Pasteur, which also sold doses of the Hepatitis "B" vaccine, according to French news sources

There is strong evidence that exposure to pesticides significantly increases the risk of Parkinson's disease, experts believe.
Link between Parkinson's Disease and Pesticides
There is strong evidence that exposure to pesticides significantly increases the risk of Parkinson's disease, experts believe. It comes as another study, published in the BMC Neurology journal, has made the link to the neurological disease. The US researchers found those exposed to pesticides had a 1.6 times higher risk after studying 600 people.

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has ruled against the Food Commission's calls for a complete ban on food additives.
Food campaigners are up in arms following the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) ruling against Food Commission's calls for a complete ban on food additives. The call for a complete ban was made last week when the Food Commission identified Cadbury as having the most products that contain one or more of the seven food additives that contribute to increased hyperactivity in children. This includes products such as Cadbury Creme Egg, which is coloured with Sunset Yellow (E110), one of the additives that the Action on Additives says should be banned from children's food. The EFSA says that the UK study provides limited evidence that the additives "had a small and statistically significant effect on activity and attention in some children selected from the general population."

Comment: As is also the case with pesticides, many artificial additives are manufactured by some of the same pharmaceutical and chemical companies that would like to ban vitamin supplements and force GM foods onto our dinner plates.

Calls for an investigation into the increasing numbers of UK patients dying as a result of adverse reactions to prescribed drugs.
The Government is facing calls for an investigation after it was disclosed that the number of patients dying as a result of a reaction to the drugs they were being treated with had doubled over the past 10 years. Figures released by the Department of Health in a parliamentary answer showed that 1,031 patients died last year as a result of an adverse drugs reaction (ADR) compared to 447 in 1997, a 131% increase. Over the same period, the number of ADR cases requiring prolonged hospitalisation rose from 2,484 to 4,545 - an 87% increase - while the total number of reported ADRs was up 30% from 16,627 to 21,600.

Comment: These UK statistics are almost certainly a severe underestimate, as medical experts warn that as few as one in 10 deaths and other serious complications are being reported.

A new superbug, acinetobacter, is causing concern because of its high resistance to antibiotics.
Pandemic fear over resistant superbug
Extracts from the Telegraph:
"Doctors have warned that if a superbug which is known to be even more resistant to antibiotics than clostridium difficile and MRSA takes hold in hospitals, the country could face a pandemic.
The acinetobacter bug is being treated with older antibiotics because newer ones do not work. There are fears that injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan have passed the infection on in civilian hospitals.
Prof Matthew Falagas, an expert in hospital-acquired infections, said: "In some cases, we have simply run out of treatments and we could be facing a pandemic with public health implications.""
"There are more than 1,000 reports of acinetobacter infections every year in the UK, according to the Health Protection Agency (HPA). Some strains can cause death through blood poisoning and pneumonia."
You can boost your immune system by cutting out salt and salty food.

Elderly people with dementia are dying prematurely in care homes because of being prescribed 'chemical coshes'.
Drugs 'kill 23,000 Alzheimer's victims a year'
Extracts from the Telegraph:
"More than 23,000 elderly people with Alzheimer's could be dying prematurely in care homes each year after being given drugs to keep them quiet, a report claims today.
Anti-psychotic drugs, which are not licensed to treat dementia but are prescribed to control agitation, sleep disturbance and aggression, are being given to 100,000 elderly people to keep them "quiet and manageable", says a report by Paul Burstow, the Liberal Democrat MP and a campaigner for the rights of elderly people.
Despite studies that show the drugs can increase the risk of strokes and have other harmful side effects, the report claims the Government has failed to act to stem their use.
The report comes as research by three universities says long-term use of anti-psychotics offers "no long-term benefit for most patients".
The claims in the report will fuel the debate over the use of powerful drugs, dubbed "chemical coshes" because of their strong sedative effect, on care home residents."
"Mr Burstow said: "There are around 244,000 people with dementia living in care homes, and the Alzheimer's Society estimates 100,000 are being given anti-psychotic drugs. Of those, I am saying that 23.5 per cent could be dying prematurely as a result of being prescribed anti-psychotic drugs - or 23,500 people a year."
Neil Hunt, of the Alzheimer's Society, said: "The over-prescription of anti-psychotic drugs to people with dementia is a serious abuse of human rights. Anti-psychotics should be used as a last resort."
Mr Burstow's report, which will be debated in the Commons today, calls for urgent police action and a ban on routine prescribing."
In my opinion, doctors who are doing this cruel and harmful prescribing should be sent to prison. You can lower your risk of vascular dementia and many other illnesses by eating less salt/sodium.
